As I recall the game today (with a shudder) it seems like we weren't gang tackling and there were a lot of 1-on-1 whiffs, including a few by Cam Goode. Cristobal at Oregon is saying that DTR may be the most dynamic player in the nation. Well, certainly he looked that way against Cal.
My "head in the sand" approach after a game like this precluded me from participating. I guess I need to at LEAST do the recap....... Sigh...... someone better zero in on Jermar or it's gonna be ugly.
Cal is heavily anchored in Garbers' performance. When he's having a good day Cal wins, otherwise...
Yes, there were serious issues everywhere on the field - bad tackling, horrible blocking, bad line backing, etc. But even with a new OC, Garbers simply missed receivers all day long. He had ZERO accuracy and he DID have opportunities that he blew. Even when receivers managed to catch one of his throws the receiver was either sliding, doubling back, or jumping to catch the errant throw.
I honestly believe that had Garbers had any semblance of accuracy this would have been a MUCH closer game as it would have rested our defense more, it would have spread the UCLA defense out more, and would opened up the OC's options a bit more and loosened up the box.
Granted, it's not a panacea but it is the one area of focus that could have changed the game.
Garbers is not a great QB, he's obviously the best we have at the moment, but we need better options to survive at a P5 level.
Very few QBs or RBs would look good behind that offensive line performance we saw on Sunday. That said, there was something horribly wrong with Cal's scheme and adjustments. When fUCLA's defense lined up every Cal fan said the same thing, "here they come again". And yet inexplicably there were no adjustments at the LOS or halftime or between possessions. No clue what that was about.
Garbers' best asset is his ability to run the ball. We will need to be patient to see if he develops into a consistent passer in now his 4th year in the program. I think the staff has to give another QB some PT, preferably an underclassman and not Modster. Nothing against Modster but Cal needs to look to the future right now and Modster isn't a part of it. Hell this year is a freebie anyways in terms of eligibility. Let the youngins play some QB.
First things first, fix the OL play that has been dismal for several years now. And the offense is gunna have to score points because teams will be able to run against our defense. Best bet for our defense is to stack the box and force teams to throw against our strength ~ the DBs.
These comments on the form are so amazing and yes I am gonna back myself for that Zach Maynard comment man its good to see how unfiltered we are except that we had to get bent over to do it lol.
