I sure wish we were a "football factory."

Pappy Waldorf, we miss you, not to mention Andy Smith.

This was a bad win. Ever since he started, Wilcox has always had a first quarter problem. We never come out roaring. We always come out half asleep and then adjust. Works against low level teams, but it's why we never beat elite teams. How do you beat them when they start with a handicap?

On the other hand, we're overreacting to the difference in FCS wins. UCD is a top ranked FCS team that will likely compete in the playoffs. Alabama A&M can't even make .500 in the FCS. If we played them, we would have blown them out too. I'm honestly wondering why we seem to only play top-ranked FCS teams. I would prefer we schedule easier FCS teams more regularly where we allow our team to get some momentum going -- especially with how many transfers we have coming in year-over-year -- in a standard A/B/C OOC schedule. FCS true warmup game, competitive G5 team, P4 OOC team that shows us where our season is going to go. We're not good enough for pride in our schedule yet. Look how that did us in the PAC-12 North. We need to start playing the same game everyone else is playing.

Lastly, this feels like the end of Wilcox. The transfer portal and NIL has been great to us, but his inability to recruit high school has set a ceiling for us that I don't think we can break through without either a magical year or a new coach.

And just watched Bloesch's press conference where he said the QB competition is likely ongoing into the Auburn game. Season's on the verge of being over by week 5 if we can't give a starting QB full practice reps throughout the week. We can't be splitting reps 50 / 50 through the season. Our QB is literally getting half the practice of his competition.

Backup quarterbacks always get plenty of reps in practice anyway. You're being hyperbolic

Bloesch specifically said they're shooting for a 50 / 50 split and that the competition isn't over. We need our 1st string QB getting as many reps with the 1st string offense. Equal number of reps but playing with 2nd and 3rd string doesn't help him. We need whoever is starting to get on the same page with all our receivers and OL ASAP, considering Trond is the only main contributor returning from last season from the WR group and the OL is constantly changing.

I really don't think I'm being hyperbolic. I've been here for a long time, and I have generally been stable in my opinions. I've defended Wilcox for a long time. This start of season shit from him is tiring and it needs to end. There's a reason you don't see the better programs going through this year-in and year-out.

Either Wilcox gets his shit together or we need to move on before it's too late. I'm hoping we just kept him to keep Ott around, and plan on cutting ties to get some momentum into our program before the next round of realignment. Our national recruiting rankings can't be in the 50's and 60's if we want to be a serious program.

The last sentence of your first reply is patently false considering no QB anywhere in college football gets 100% of practice snaps. There's your panicked hyperbole.

We have a lot of rotation at receiver and running back, and splitting first and second team reps is not going to destroy chemistry and preparation.

But stay mad, I guess.

Where did I say the starting QB should get 100% of practice snaps? I said they shouldn't be getting 50% and that no other serious school is stuck in a perpetual QB competition every single season going into week 3.

You said Mendoza is literally getting half of the practice of his competition. That's a patent falsehood. He's still getting plenty of practice snaps, and he and Rogers are basically splitting first and second team reps.

Last week I missed most of the game due to family duties. This week looks to be more of the same. Darn.

"In traditional Wilcoxian fashion, defensive ratings are higher than the defensive ratings." Sounds like Wilcox has figured out how to break the laws of physics. Give that man a Nobel prize!

I proofread this piece twice and distinctly remember actively reading through that section, and I still managed to miss that. I'm clearly starting the season with some first-half Cal vs. FCS teams energy.

So,,,it MIGHT not be so easy?
