this is NOT what I was expecting to wake up to

MNBear's avatar

Must keep Bloesch. The biggest difference between last year and this year is O-line performance.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Cal football keeps finding different ways that it is Cal football. This is example # 5,693.

Terence's avatar

He probably got sick of me yelling “Run the ball Spav” from high in section QQ

GoldenSD81's avatar

It’s all your fault, Terence.

cleancutmedia's avatar

your penance is to go to baylor games and yell teh exact same thing in the same tone to spook Spav.

JeriAnn May's avatar

If I wasn’t so upset about this, this would be funny…

Justbear's avatar

And when Ott gets stuffed, they yell "pass the ball! Forget everything I just said!"

Alex Ghenis's avatar

Oh, so now you're telling me I have to just sit around here and wait and neurotically check this website and social media until we find out who the new OC is? You're telling me I just have to keep being a degenerate obsessive college football fan to the point it affects my productivity? Really????? Thanks a lot, football deity, whoever you are…

GoldenSD81's avatar

This is not good. Aranda and Wilcox are basically carbon copies of each other and have similar issues, good defense but bad offense.

I can’t believe we lost Spav to a lateral move to Baylor.

This is very disappointing and now I’m even more pessimistic about Wilcox’s future.

Piotr Le's avatar

I wouldn't say lateral as much as it tastes like ash in my mouth. Baylor is much easier to recruit to and has more resources in a state and area that is more invested in football.

Terence's avatar

Probably a bigger paycheck, plus no income tax in a lower cost of living area. He’s also originally from Oklahoma.

Bear19's avatar

The problem is that Spavital had coached at Cal before with Dykes, and he knew all the tax, cost of living issues before taking the job a second time around. Should have never been hired by Wilcox.

Terence's avatar

There is no off season for college football. And while Spav was well compensated it wasn’t enough to maintain two households,

JeriAnn May's avatar

What do you mean by ‘maintain two households’? Forgive me if it’s already answered in the comment thread. I’m reading in chronological order trying to figure out ‘what the he$$?’ Not a good look for Spav imo. He really must have let down our team (offensive guys big time), and fans.

Terence's avatar

Bob R was suggesting that Spav was living in a different location in the offseason and I mentioned that it’s highly unlikely as the job of a college football coach is a year round job and also it’s unlikely that he would have two different households even if he was making close to a million a year.

Bear19's avatar

So why did he take the job in the first place?

Bob, the point Terence is making is that the OC at Cal doesn't pack up and leave campus once the football season is over. There is no "off-season" for the coaches, so in Spav's case the tax rule you referenced is irrelevant because he's in CA full time.

CalFBFan's avatar

It's got to be lateral, and to a less safe place, IMO. Sebasta says it isn't about the money, so we take that out. But he's leaving a (pardon my rose colored glasses) a good team on an upswing heading to an easier conference for a bad team with arguably a tougher road. The HC there is in the hot seat. They lose, and the offense didn't produce, he goes down with the ship. If he stays with Cal, and we get 8-9 wins (again, the glasses) he's interviewing for HC jobs at this time next year.

Rob Hwang's avatar

Bob. Did you understand the reason for your ban last week?

Bear19's avatar

What I don't like about your posting rule is that you dump on Bob for posting an article link, while you do nothing about posters using foul language (see Rugbear's comment, “big fuckin raise”).

I believe you're deliberately trying to intimidate Bob, which clearly is not working. I don't like that. How about working to clean up the language posters use?

Andy's avatar

I thought this was America!

Bear19's avatar

Spavital knew all that from having coached at Cal with Dykes. Either he lied to Wilson about staying at Cal for more than one year, or Wilcox stupidly looked past his history of leaving Cal as soon as possible when a texas offer came along.

HaasBear's avatar

I don’t know him but all his other stops have been in the south. He’s from Oklahoma, played ball at Missouri State and coached at Texas A&M, Texas State, Tulsa, Houston, Etc… California has been is only west coast stop. This simply could be a guy going back to where he’s most comfortable.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

This is the most likely, IMHO. Opportunity knocked, he answered.

Rugbear's avatar

Spav was getting paid $925k at CAL this year. A lot of the young up and coming OC's are getting paid $1.4m to $1.85. My guess is that Spav got a big fuckin raise to go to Baylor, but I can't find out how much he's getting paid...yet.

Alex Ghenis's avatar

Plus cost of living 😕

Rugbear's avatar

Yeah, but the weather is so nice in CA...I left CA, I miss the great life and my friends, but not the idiocracy that runs the place: homelessness, high taxes, traffic, expensive housing. It's a great place for a part time residence...

Alex Ghenis's avatar

All thanks to NIMBYs.

Not coach of the year, right? Wasn’t it sports figure of the year? Which translates to most influential? I could be wrong (it’s happened once before….)

Rugbear's avatar

Colorado is Democrat but people here are reasonable. :)

Alex Ghenis's avatar

Homelessness in California is largely a result of our housing shortage. Unreasonable NIMBYs have run the state and local governments for ages, and Prop 13 by its very structure disincentivizes (or under-incentivizes) redevelopment. Luckily new laws in Sacramento are addressing that, but it'll take several years (and probably longer) for the housing market to stabilize, with the extra problem of higher interest rates these days.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

On the contrary, prop 13 gives incentive to expand city tax bases with new development. Not to mention encouraging turnover in property ownership. Most local governments already have work-arounds for Prop 13 with local save-our-whatever incremental sales tax increases on ballots. Of course, there’s the state Lottery that’s “for the kids.” Ha ha.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Lots of homeless people in Denver when I was there last month.

Homelessness is an affordability, mental health, and addiction issue.

Plus the cost of taxes. Income tax in Texas is zero. Income tax about $677k in California is 12.3%. When I used an online calculator for what would be owed in CA state taxes on $1.4M, it came to over $150,000. So, I'm thinking that to match a $1.4M offer from Texas, you really need to offer about $1.6M in CA! I'd guess the same logic applies to what we pay the players in NIL. (I hope the players are getting good advice and setting $ aside for taxes.)

Alex Ghenis's avatar

Texas taxes get you in other ways, but aside from property taxes those are all pretty regressive so a guy with $1.4 million salary will be better off

deehart's avatar

typo.. I meant that the income tax rate for income above $677k is 12.3% in CA...

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Plus it’s closer to home.

Toohandy's avatar

And he wants to go home.

HaasBear's avatar

He probably got offered a raise but even if the money is the same is it that crazy?

I am California born and raised, if I got a great job offer on the east coast I’d take it. But if a year later I got the same offer back in California you bet I’d be on the first flight.

He’s from Oklahoma, and has coached multiple Texas schools. West coast just might not be for him.

TD_24's avatar

alright time to get modern and run a triple option with tons of t formations

Toohandy's avatar

Modern? Triple option and tons of T formation is offense out of the 60's, to 70's. Even the service academy's have dropped most of it.

TD_24's avatar

i was being sarcastic dont worry

GoldenBear88's avatar

I hope that he at least stays through our bowl game. Overall, thanks to Spav for reinvigorating our offense and helping us get to bowl eligibility. Just a reminder that this is going to be the new norm from now on. At the end of every season, even on the best teams, players and coaches will head for what they think are greener pastures. However, careful what you wish for. Dante Moore just announced he is leaving FUCLA and I'll bet that traitor J. Michael Sturdivant is having second thoughts about leaving Cal for FUCLA. As many of you at WFC have pointed out, the grass isn't always greener somewhere else.

Steve W's avatar

When I watched Dante Moore Saturday night, I did not see the same building blocks that eventually led his predecessor - DTR - to have a great career at UCLA and probably a long NFL stay. Good luck to the young man, but don[t be surprised if we don't hear from him again.

GoldenBear88's avatar

Steve: He looked completely dejected and overwhelmed during the game. When he was sacked by David Reese and laying on the turf after his helmet was knocked off, the camera captured him pulling his balaclava over his eyes and practically curling up in a ball right on the spot. That should have told everyone something.

WilderThanGene's avatar

To be fair, that was a pretty big hit and likely a missed Targeting call. (if that same hit was on Mendoza, I for one wouldve been screaming for targeting). Wasnt an easy one to pop back up from.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

Follow up: Dante Moore hit the Portal.

BiPolarPolarBear's avatar

Exactly!!! He looked more concerned about adjusting his hood than protecting the ball he just fumbled. Usually, a QB will instinctively look around for the ball after a fumble. The kid didn’t seem to care.

PawlOski's avatar

I wonder if Justyn Martin gets his chance now with Garbers and Moore out of the picture. I guess that’s not our problem any more.

CalBear91's avatar

Isn't he still HC at Fresburg?

Bowlesman 80's avatar

He’s stepping down, for health reasons, so I have read, here.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

Damn, not a bad idea. Also, Ron Rivera?

Bear19's avatar

Can't see Ron Rivera going from an NFL HC to become Cal’s OC.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

Welp, now a moot point.

Osodeoro's avatar

WTF, can’t Cal match or exceed compensation and designate him as assistant head coach?

WilderThanGene's avatar

Sometimes it isnt about matching. Don't forget Bay Area cost of living AND culture fit. No matter how much any football coach from the South, Midwest, or East tells you they love Berkeley, always take it with a grain of salt. (Maybe Tony Franklin was a special exception, being such a groovy dude).

For Spav specifically, it was somewhat predictable. During his first stint it always felt to me a temporary marriage of convenience. Little things like him not wearing Cal gear or colors in interviews or even during games on the sideline.

This time around it felt different for a few reasons, but it's impossible to tell if he always viewed it as another stop-gap.

I mean, who here has never gotten a little tipsy one night and had fun their ex?

Terence's avatar

The colors on the sideline are so the QB can quickly identify him for signals, nothing more or less.

WilderThanGene's avatar

You don't know that for sure. It seemed is style was to wear a black fleece regardless that year (which doesnt exactly pop out). Probably nothing, yes, but my intuition the whole time from his interviews that year told me he was at a place he didnt really want to be.

WilderThanGene's avatar

I know and I know that's why Sirmon wears the baby blue or green for example... With Spav I just think its his style to wear black, and I dont see black as being super effective if your goal is to really catch the eye and stand out.

Bear19's avatar

OMG Terence, you ACTUALLY posted a link in your comment! Shame! Now Hwang is going have to threaten you like he's been doing with Bob R.

Toohandy's avatar

Obviously you don't know much about coaching football. Coaches call the offense and defense, not players (except for an occasional audible by the QB).So in order for the QB or defensive player getting the signal from the OC or DC he has to be able to find the signal caller right away on the sideline which has about 80 players and coaches on it. That's why the OC or DC or his rep dress in very loud jerseys. DUH

WilderThanGene's avatar

"That's why the OC or DC or his rep dress in very loud jerseys. DUH".

Ah so that explains why Spav always wore BLACK, to really stand out in the sea of dark blue. I could see how black really pops in the sun. Brilliant insight, and you're right I dont know much about coaching or even anything about colors for that matter.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Right, I don’t understand why we can’t match this offer. Maybe Spav just prefers to be in Texas? Is he from Texas?

JeriAnn May's avatar

Do we even know if this is the reason he’s leaving?

Steve W's avatar

The move to Baylor is puzzling because that team had a horrific season and just fired their O coordinator who led them to an 11-2 season and a Sugar Bowl berth just two years ago. I am guessing Spav sees a much higher ceiling for jumping to a re-vamped Big 12 that no longer includes Texas and Oklahoma. The salary bump didn't hurt, either.

Bear19's avatar

I think he realized that since Cal is going to the ACC, the players will have to actually drop into their classes once in a while.

GlueAndBold's avatar

For four brief days I could forget we can't have nice things

CalBear91's avatar

He's the most Charlie Brown person ever for Cal football. He burned the bridges with this one. Don't care why or how, you don't come and go in one year twice. Unless he told Wilcox up front he'd be a one year wonder, this is truly unprofessional and shitty of him.

Alex Ghenis's avatar

Don't you mean he's the most Lucy-with-the-football person ever?

Alex Ghenis's avatar

I think it was in his last press conference he mentioned how his offenses really take off in the second year and was looking forward to that here… And then *poof* he's gone

Rugbear's avatar

I'll bet he got a big raise and a nudge from his wife. You can't hold that against him. I'm happy that he got Mendoza dialed in.

Strut’88's avatar

Also I can’t hold it against him if he prefers a gig in which he and his team will travel like 8K total miles next year for six away games vs. 21K total miles (according to my rough calculations, and even that is assuming Cal’s fourth non-con ends up being in Berkeley) if he were to stay at Cal. No comparison.

JeriAnn May's avatar

Yes. Definitely burned my bridge. Not the kind of coach I want at Cal for the kids. I seriously hope it’s for a non-selfish reason as our players and other coaches deserve better moral character.

I will withhold my full wrath about this until I hear the reason for him.

He better really work to convince our guys to stay. I know not probable. But the team must have had their ballon bust with this news. And thank you spav for doing it when the team was finally gelling as a team and mentally with a bowl game as a reward.

I’m really disgusted by this move. Ok so maybe I’m releasing some of my wrath bc I need to understand and rationalize this with all of y’all.

Bob Dole's avatar

You get offered the money he’ll be making and see what you do. Relax, it’s a business. He did his job while he was here. Nothing wrong with what he’s doing

CalBear91's avatar

I strongly disagree. There is a whole lot wrong with leaving a gig after one year, especially when you did the same thing a few years prior. Again, unless Wilcox hired him knowing Spav would bolt after one year, it's a slap in the face. Integrity and honor do mean something, after all, to many of us.

Bob Dole's avatar

He didn’t have a choice the first stint.Sonny Dykes staff was let go, he was not retained as OC. He did ,in that first stint, serve as our interim coach and did his best to keep recruits committed to Cal. He was hired again to improve our offense and he did just that and I didn’t see him do anything disgraceful in the two stints he was here, so I think his integrity and honor are still intact. Again, this is a business, I’d let it go

docsuess84's avatar

Not true. He was Wilcox’s first choice and he said no because he wanted a crack a head coaching.

Bob Dole's avatar

Where did you hear that from? He wasn’t even hired as a HC after Cal. He went to West Virginia to be the OC

Bear19's avatar

You don't know much about building a successful D-1 football program, do you? I'm no expert, but it's clear one-and-done coaches hurt the programs they do this to.

Bob Dole's avatar

Ok so you can continue to be mad then. I’m not going to get in an argument with you

Bear19's avatar

Spavital obviously took the job as a placeholder while he looked to get back to his beloved texas. Wilcox absolutely should have known better than to have hired him.

ShanghaiDave93's avatar

I knew he would be gone soon but not THIS soon.

Was expecting 2-3 years here and then he gets a Head Coaching job.

Are we now going to be looking for a new OC and DC?

cleancutmedia's avatar

Let's find an OC who can bring a few players with him...

Heino's avatar

And hopefully none bolt with Spav.

Raymond's avatar

Cautiously optimistic - it’s not like he brought most of these guys in
