Report: Cal Offensive Coordinator Jake Spavital to take the same position at Baylor
Justin Wilcox will be looking for a new OC again.
Much like 2016, Cal OC Jake Spavital will be leaving Berkeley for the state of Texas after one season. This time he will be heading to Baylor as the offensive coordinator, if reports are true. Spavital will be replacing Jeff Grimes, who was relieved of his position earlier this week.
Spavital was rumored to be in the running for the Cal job in 2016 after the firing of Sonny Dykes, but after Justin Wilcox was hired, Spavital chose to go to West Virginia as offensive coordinator/QB coach.
In Spavital's one year return at Cal, the Bears made remarkable offensive leaps. Cal jumped from 24 points per game (96th in FBS) to 31.6 (tied for 40th), and made leaps in advanced metrics (from 91st in SP+ to top 40 this year). Cal also saw the development of Jaydn Ott into the Pac-12's leading rusher, and gained a potential future starting quarterback in Fernando Mendoza.
Justin Wilcox will now have to find his fourth offensive coordinator in year eight.
