Leadership matters. Enormously. Not all the time. But frequently. Chancellor Lyons is the right person at the right time, I believe. In the years ahead, our beloved institution may need to defend it's values and spirit from politicians who disparage the essence of Fiat Lux. I believe Chancellor Lyons would capably stand tall in defense of UC Berkeley and the students and faculty and employees of the amazing institution that globally leads. I don't have to agree with everything any leader does, yet when I respect their motivating principles and believe they grasp the values and norms of the organization, I grant them license to lead where they see the course best going.
The thing I most like about him is that he seems to have a clear-eyed, practical attitude about things and not a detached ivory-tower one. Like, I doubt he would give some of the terrible answers the Ivy League presidents did in that Congressional hearing.
I think that one of the key statements made by Chancellor Lyon in his introduction is that he is the first Cal undergrad to become Berkeley Chancellor. I have had the pleasure of being in a meeting with him and undergraduate students, and I believe he is not only of Cal, but understands the student experience. I wish him the best, and the best for Cal.
So smart...I love how he is coming on board and the messaging around it. Look at the choice of the four voices to welcome him...faculty, staff, athletics and alumni. Many other choices could have been made, so this speaks volumes in my judgment. I am very optimistic...GO BEARS!
