Fuck Tosh. He failed as a DC at Bama. How can anyone do that with the talent those guys have? Plus he lacks any integrity. Let him languish in the NFL as a position coach the rest of his career. It's the hell he deserves.

Plus, the bulk of his appeal seems to be his talent at recruiting by being young and relatable. If we just want that, then there's gotta be younger coaches who are more relatable and more affordable.

Duck fans are saying that we are going to hire UofO’s safeties coach (Keith Hayward) as DC as he was upset that he wasn’t promoted to that position there. Supposed to be an excellent recruiter.

recruited thibodeaux for oregon and smith-schuster for usc. also coached up marcus peters, kevin king, jaire alexander, and adoree jackson

Also, now hearing that the reason UofO hasn’t officially announced DeRuyter is that they are trying to hire Tosh as Co-DC. Don’t know if any of this is true but that’s what’s being talked about by Duck fans.

Sad to see DeRuyter leave. The guy has a helluva defensive mind and is a solid coach. I think all the crap flying around about a demotion when Wilcox's buddy Sirmon can along is wrong. Same with the rumor about a cut in pay. DeRuyter made $850k. That was no cut in pay. And as to the 'demotion' He wanted to be a head coach again so Wilcox first gave him the title of Associate HC and then gave Sirmon more responsibility with play calling to make the transition smoother. I'm not as worried about the play calling as I am about the schemes which are usually hashed out on Sunday and Monday nights after watching film. DeRuyter will not be a part of crafting defensive schemes. That's a BIG deal. Personally I think Sirmon will be fine. He's smart, he played the game in the pros for a decent amount of time and he's known and worked with Wilcox for a long time and Wilcox has a great defensive mind. My guess is they both approach their tasks very similarly. I will Coach DeRuyter well at Oregon. He's on my list of favorite coaches, not just because he's a good coach, but also because he's just a great guy. I think he made a mistake. I don't think Cristobal is the coach everyone believes him to be. He's good, but not great and Oregon's record show that. They always seem to lose one or two games that that should win with their superior talent. I think CAL is on the ascension, even after this weird year. I think Oregon has actually declined a bit from being a former powerhouse. Btw, we are always going to lose coaches. Coaches in a successful program always get recruited to other programs. Good coaches usually move on every two years until they reach their top spot. Wilcox is great at hiring and its one of the reasons he's such a good HC. HC's nowadays have to be like CEO's, not just good coaches on the field. Wilcox fits that role (Unlike John Gruden at the Raiders who is great at X's and O's but sucks as a CEO). Looking forward to a better and improved next season! Go Bears!

I agree this isn’t the end of the world, and Wilcox has made good hires on that side of the ball (and could always step in himself and take a greater role short term if needed). I also assume moving Sirmon to co-DC last year was made with the expectation that DeRuyter would leave, though maybe a bit of a surprise that he left to take a DC position in division instead of a HC position elsewhere. I don’t think the comp difference is insignificant (his pay last year included a $300K retention bonus, but this is likely a 2X increase in base salary), but really it’s about creating the next HC opportunity for him. I hope you’re right about Cal and Oregon heading in different directions, but it’s hard to argue we are getting better players: Oregon has had top 10 classes each of the last 3 years and we, uh, have not. I think it’s likely he’s in a better place to pursue the next opportunity.

Wilcox can re-hire Desmond Bishop

Here's my crazy idea for Major Coaching Shake-Up:

Assign all linebackers to Sirmon or have Wilcox take on OLB duties and find a way to add a former OC/HC to the offensive staff like splitting tackles vs. interior linemen. Having multiple coordinators/former head coaches on defense helped, so let's see if it helps on offense.

It happened all the time before the 10th assistant. Still happens with hands on head coaches. Wilcox had times where he coached the linebackers. After the 10th assistant it’s not needed Cz you can cover every position group.

A little off topic, but Byron Cardwell announces on Monday with Cal in final 4.

I suspect your option 1 will win the day. Wilcox and Sirmon are solid together, and between the two of them don't need other defensive leadership. So hire an LB coach who is a great recruiter and groom the team to replace Sirmon some day. I agree with Rugbear below that our Bears are on the rise, and it sure looks like Udumb and the Shucks are plateaued. I can really see our Bears winning the North this coming year, if the ball bounces right a few times.
