I have to say that this is not the way to build a winning team, but Stanfurd never ceases to surprise me with stupid moves. How are they ever going to recruit when a new HC is an 'interim' Coach with a one year contract? They have been anti NIL but even if that changes, how do you raise money like this. So far I'm not impressed with Luck's moves.

They still have 5 months till the opening game. That's a lot of time to find a real head coach.

They didn't hire an interim head coach for a year to hire a full time coach in 5 months.

I'm saying they should have hired a real head coach instead of an interim head coach. 5 months is enough time to do so.

100% agree.

Is it in JWs contract that he reports to the AD? That’s the only reason I can think of why he still reports to JK.

JK shouldn’t be anywhere near football (or basketball for that matter). That Rivera is need to get football in the right direction is demonstrating his incompetence. How is his $1.3MM/yr salary justified now that Rivera is on board. JK needs to be shown the door and the rest of the AD needs someone in charge that can promote those programs. Donors hate him!

This is not a reasoned post. The need for a GM is not in and of itself an indictment on the ADs performance

Only problem is that Wilcox still reports to Knowlton. They need to make it clear just how much power Rivera actually has.

I'll add that what makes me happiest is that this is a tangible demonstration of the Chancellor's commitment to Cal Football. I had the opportunity to meet with him recently, and he 100% gets it!

Agreed. Spoke with him at a number of Cal events, including Gameday. You love to see it.

$800k/yr is a wild sum. Happy to hear it’s privately funded - we have some very deep pockets backing the program

That's not that much since both Harsin and Wilcox earn more, Wilcox especially so. I did a calculation last season on how much he was paid per snap and it's a pretty astounding number.

Not really - I think it’s rather a value for a man of his caliber

I was going to say, this feels like another donation from Ron in a way.

I wouldn't be shocked if he donated to his own salary fund lol

I'm still waiting for DC announcement

Assuming Wilcox will fill that role, at this point.

He should.

Or he will make 2 current staffers co-DC’s….

Things are lining up nicely to supercharge the program.

Now all we have to do that thing called, “win” and not end up with a limp record or it’s another wasted opportunity

8 wins is the floor or JW is looking for work.

There’s no reason why they shouldnt hit that mark with these additions.

Hmm. I hope that’s within reach. But the following significant question marks loom for me: Is Cal doing better than eight of its competitors on the schedule this fall, in terms of 1. NIL/portal, 2. Coaching stability that allows for effective teaching of schemes/information to the players 3. Morale/“Culture”. 4. Conditioning and logistical program planning amidst a scenario where they’re traveling manyfold more hours and miles than all but one of their opponents? Perhaps the challenges will make the team/staff stronger, and this program, with all its recent changes, will bond together quickly. However, I think seven wins would be an accomplishment. Yeah, you could say that’s a low bar. But I would not be unhappy with it.

IMHO, if Wilcox can't beat .500 in-conference he should be gone. I don't honestly care about the circumstances BECAUSE that would give us 3 seasons for the next HC to turn us around before the next round of realignment. We can't give a new HC any less than that, and need to decide this season whether or not we have ANY faith left in Wilcox. Shit or get off the pot.

7 wins while playing 4 OOC games would be yet another failure.

I hear ya, but eventually Wilcox is going to have to show he can win football games.

Cal is very likely going to end up back with Oregon State and Wazzu if they don’t become a more valuable program, and then they are cutting sports, etc. The NCAA landscape has changed so much that you can’t keep rolling with a guy that basically loses 2 out of every 3 conference games he coaches. Adding the coaching minds he has, including Riverboat, is a statement - it’s now or never.

Stepping forward rather than backward in this new era of college athletics

Yeah, really am surprised that we are one of the leaders in CFB in this regard, esp with our sprawling UB bureaucracy. I think this doesn’t happen if Lyons wasn’t pushing it hard
