Without a doubt QB is the most important position to find the starter to get reps and coach up. Put it this way. A team of studs with a shitty or average QB rarely does well. An average to decent team with a good QB can do well. And a good team with a good QB wins championships. Every other position on the field can be helped with some modifications to scheme. Without a good QB you have no scheme (that works).
Stetson is better than average, but not great. He won the job over 5 star and former USC starter JT Daniels. While Stetson doesn't compare to NFL talent, in college he is good enough to start at Georgia. Here are his 2021 stats:
Stetson Bennett is a good college QB who played on a GREAT team. Here's a simple question for you: how many NFL players will come out of that team this year? You can argue, but you will never convince me that the QB position is absolutely, undeniably the most important position on the field.
I would suggest you ask any college or Pro coach if they had the chance to pick the best QB or the best at any other position, who would they pick. There is a reason QB's get the biggest bucks. They make it all happen.
I know, but you said every other position can be helped with some modification. It sounds like you are saying all you need is a good QB. Obviously Dykes's team sucked so bad that nothing could help the defense.
The context I meant to give is if you don't have a stud outside linebacker there are other things you can do to play great defense, IF YOU HAVE A GOOD DEFENSE. If you have a shitty defense, there is nothing you can do. Remember, I said Good Team + Good QB = Championships. I'll take an average OLB over and average QB any day of the week. I want a great QB!! There is a reason teams rarely win championships without a great QB. Is that a little clearer, or is there another perspective you would like me to address? ;-)
Aaron and CAL should have been in the Rose Bowl. Mack Brown crying and his brother changing his vote for the coaches poll put Texas ahead of us and they ended up in the Rose Bowl. It was bullshit. We fell apart when we played in the Holiday Bowl. I'm sure moral was at a all time low for the season since we were ranked #4 and got fucked out of the Rose Bowl by below the belt politics.
I think the defense will be OK. Last year we started poorly in the secondary and LB having to replace Kuony but those guys improved throughout the season thanks to focus by Sirmon and Wilcox on that side of the ball. On O I don't know if Musgrave's pro style can work. We don't have elite speed at WR, have a real lack of experience as well. At RB we have a committee approach but no true elite backs. QB will probably be the immobile Plummer, which will make life difficult for a patchwork offensive line since he lacks Chase' escapability. Sort of a crapshoot but my expectations are for another 5-7 season. Last year some folks were talking about Cal being a dark horse candidate in the North, this year there will be none of that.
Mavin and JMike have speed. We have speed. Can we utilize these players and take advantage of what they can do on the field even if it means simplifying the O. Welp, that is up to Musgrave.
Heard from a friend that Plummer is good and likely the front runner. I'm just glad we have some competition at QB and perhaps the winner will get the ball to these WR's.
Yah, spring ball is upon us. I agree that the defense should be fine this season and I have the same concerns about the offense. Maybe Ott's speed is used more and more as the season moves forward. I am thinking a 6-6 season, no real reason for it, I am a Cal fan is all.
Craig gone, eh? Is he in the portal or has he retired from football?
Retired
Not too surprised. It seemed he lost his love for the game. He will get a great education and I wish him the best.

Stetson Bennett just won a title and I would rate him as average to below average. He will not be drafted and may not even be picked up as a UDFA.
Lots of average QBs have won national championships and Rose Bowls over the last 30 years.

We had Goff. He wasn't just good. He was really good. We didn't win any championships ;(
Goff was not surrounded by a good team. Dykes' defenses sucked.

We also had Aaron Rodgers. He wasn't just good. He was a super star level QB. We didn't win championships. :(

Hear Hear!
Wahoo! Spring Ball when every team is pointing to the natty. GO BEARS! 15-0 in '22!!
Well, I was thinking about the natty vs. Alabama after 2 quarters in the first game in September last year.
I'll have what you're having.
It is called "Living in North Carolina and hearing the MBB whiners (smirk)."

Just thinking this morning about what might happen on the slim chance that Cal beats Notre Dame, might finally get us some respect in the CFB world.
We'd be riding pretty high that week, before promptly losing the next game to Arizona!

Beating Notre Dame would be crazy good. Unlikely, as you say, but fun to think about.
You should be the change you want.
Never heard of them. Could you tell me more about these organizations?
Jaff Faurudo does an excellent job at CAL Bears Maven.
He's a crap interviewer and answers the question in his question. In fact our own Petr Lee did a much better job in the interviews yesterday.
