Oh my Gosh did he ever. I'm a big Nebraska fan. They set a record this year. The first school to lose 9 games all by single digits (sound familiar Cal fans?). They had Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State on the ropes and would inevitably lose because of one bone-headed play, usually by Martinez. In the Michigan game, it was tied with 1:15 left and Nebraska had the ball. Martinez ran up the middle and there was a big scrum. Martinez got stripped and Michigan kicked the winning field goal 3 plays later. Martinez said after the game "I thought the play was over." So he then relaxed and allowed the ball to get stripped. This is a 4 year starter. You do not want to be any where near this level of unintelligent play, whatever skills this guy may have.
That fumble on the scrum is a bit unfair, the refs should have blown their whistle to end that ply long before he fumbled. His momentum was stopped and they let it play a lot longer than normal.
Also, Frost, similar to Wilcox at TCU, should have taken the points on the opening drive and kicked the easy FG rather than going for it on 4th down.
I've seen a LOT of Martinez games the last 4 years and they mostly ended in tears. Well, maybe Cal fans will see him at our Memorial Stadium. You have been warned. Maybe he just needs a change of venue/coaching. It'd be exciting for sure.
Man, never thought Adrian Martinez would inspire such strong and negative feelings amongst the Cal faithful - he's always looked solid whenever I've seen him...you'da thought game manager Chase Garbers had won a whole lot more in Berkeley than he actually has...
Just for schitts and giggles, I looked up their career statistics, which was a good comp b/c they're both 4 year starters for lower 1/3rd teams in P5 Conferences. I give the competition edge to Martinez, as the B1G has undeniably been the stronger conference b/t '18-'21.
Garbers:
Pass: 598/959 (62.4%) for 6580 yds, 50 TD/24 Int/132.2 rtg.
Rush: 331 carries/1174/11 TD
Martinez:
Pass: 670/1055 (63.5%) for 8491 yds, 45 TD/30 Int/139.5 rtg.
Rush: 508 carries/2301 yds/35 TD
Sorry, but I'll take Martinez any f-ing day...the 5 fewer TDs and 6 more picks are far outbalanced by the 24 rushing td edge...kid is a much bigger red zone threat, something this team needs to be better at. I really hope we get him.
Nebraska shook up their OL about 3-4 games into the season, something Cal has been reluctant to do. Who knows how effective any QB will do behind Cal's OL. THAT is what needs fixin'.
You would think Martinez was ToshтАЩs nephew or something! I canтАЩt believe how negative people are on Martinez. I think he would be an upgrade over Garbers and we probably win 7 games with him this season.
How many ranked teams did Martinez play this season? 4 Garbers played what, 1?
The Big 10 is as strong as itтАЩs ever been and the Pac 12 has been as weak as itтАЩs ever been. Yet Martinez has put up some good stats and played well in hostile stadiums against much better opponents in his career.
Right!???! I acknowledge that Chase is a more conservative player who doesn't usually make the killer turnover, THO it has been known to happen. And even tho he runs on his tippy toes like a kid with gout in his right foot and an ingrown big toenail on his left, he was definitely a threat as a runner, tho he did most of his damage on the scramble drill.
But Martinez' legs alone separate him...he's a true duel threat. We'd be lucky to get him....upgrade big time.

Sounds like a slam dunk fit at Cal...no wonder Wilcox was all over him to begin with. This kid screams Cal Football.

No doubt, he will make more mistakes than Chase, but heтАЩs also a more physically gifted QB w/ more big game experienceтАж.
IтАЩve been lamenting the talent gap on O for Wilcox teams, so IтАЩll take the Martinez upsideтАж& the turnoversтАж.
Poor judgement tends to trump talent. And Martinez has been a case study in poor decision making in key situations.
