I moved back to the East Bay from the East Coast two years ago, after a decade and a half away, to discover a smoking crater where professional sports once were in the East Bay.
Jesse, Sounds like you have 'Cal Fever". Believe me, it's a chronic condition that's incurable. No matter win or lose it just doesn't go away. Being a Cal fan for over 70 years I know.
Welcome home and thank you for this lovely evocative piece… even though I now live far away, I’m right there with you, now, next year and the year after that. Go Bears Forever!
You are a dreamer or possibly on something. I moved to the Bay Area in 1975 and been a Bears fan for the last 50 years. There has been only a handful of years that you can truly say that the Bears were in any kind of contention in basketball or football. These past few years has been a disaster for the Cal programs. They have made a ton of mistakes and have not kept up with the times. Especially, in this NIL era and moving to the ACC. The mast exodus of players is a great indication of it. I am hoping and will dream for better days. But, unless they have a better leadership and are able to keep players for continuity and stability We will continue to wallow in mediocrity.
The top solution for your's and many of us is to get out of this gosh AWFUL conference. You can thank USC and yes, UCLA, for the destruction of the PAC 12. The ACC is what is says, an east coast conference and we don't belong in it period.
I agree Cal and Stanford should have stayed with Oregon State and Washington State and remained in the Pac12. Then help create and build a new conference. Especially, now the CFP has and will expand they would have a better chance in making the playoffs.
I hear you. It's true. Last Rose Bowl 1958? Incredible to continue year after year in mediocrity.
Being emotionally attached, I have tried many times to detach. Nothing works, I still remain a suffering old Cal fan. My Dad took me to Cal vs Ohio State at Memorial stadium in the 50.s (Cal lost). but I picked up on the excitement and still hope.
GO BEARS!!!! FOREVER!!!!!
Welcome back and Go Bears!
We go because we go. We know bcause we know.We enjoy what we can but don't expect much.
