I appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm which comes after many, many years of mediocre Cal football brought to us by a multitude of coaches, not just Wilcox, but let’s not underestimate the amount of hard work ahead of Tosh to get Cal out of the deep hole we’ve been in for so many years. Once this initial enthusiasm dies down, and it will, the proof, as the old saying goes, will be in the pudding. As one who sat in the Rose Bowl stands with my father in 1959 to watch Cal lose to Iowa, I’ve seen an awful lot of Cal football so you’ll just have to pardon me for my tempered response to yet another new coach. I’m just hoping Pappy is looking down on us with a great big smile on his face, satisfied that this time Cal has finally made the right choice.

Jaron just tweeted this a few minutes ago:

This month has had its share of highs and lows. It was tough losing Coach Wilcox, who brought me to Cal, after some huge wins over Louisville and SMU.

Yesterday the news dropped: we’re heading to The Hawai’i Bowl! Excited, as it’s my home, where my family and friends are!

Last night I landed in Honolulu and found out about our new Head Coach! Congratulations Coach Lupoi, welcome home!!

To everyone reaching out, thank you for the support. I truly love my teammates and the entire Cal Community. You are my ‘Ohana! Right now, I’m here with my family to support my Saber Teammates tonight in the Open Div State Championship, while the transition in Berkeley settles down.

Aloha🤙🏼

This is not a work product of a freshman - carefully written by his team.

Overarching themes from Tosh's comments:

- Clear alignment between HC/GM/Chancellor and alumni/donors/students/fans

- Building a relentless "attacking" culture both on the field & in the classroom

- Growth mindset (rather than fixed mindset) for everyone associated with the program

- Team and staff representing the larger Cal community with humility & excellence

- Talent acquisition: prioritize HS recruiting while pursuing top portal targets; also includes assembling a high quality staff [he mentioned that he's already interviewed 3 potential staff candidates in the past 24 hours]

- Former players (including teammates of his) will be encouraged to be involved with the program in some way; apparently at least 40 former players were present at the presser today

It’s a beautiful thing.

Now let’s lock JKS in and start recruiting legit NFL talent around him.

What struck me the most was not his enthusiasm (which is obvious) but his attention to the details of structuring a successful team. He has check lists of important goals (without mentioning “winning”, which is easy to do) developed based on everything he has learned over the past 15 or so years being integral parts of championship programs. And he will demand that his players live up to those check lists (which are specific to separate aspects of winning). My favorite was his expectation that each player on the O or D line be prepared to engage in “6 seconds of hell” on every snap. This is genius. An objective that each of his players can shoot for, without being overwhelmed. He has many others. Football is the one thing in sports that’s most like the military. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re going to play you’re going to play by the leader’s rules. We are going to see a monumental improvement in discipline with his teams ( the lack of which has led to many many frustrating losses that we have all complained about for years). So buckle up. But it’s going to be a fun ride. Go Bears!

Just watched the press conference...great to see WFC well represented. And Tosh delivered big time, while Rivera could not stop smiling...so great...growth mindset rules! I also loved how he made the pitch to JKS that me being your coach as a defensive coach will improve your game and opportunities to learn...and that he talked to Goff today!...so smart. I'm all in!

Imagine showing that sentence to Cal fans 10 years ago and telling the fanbase that we're actually stoked for it.

I think very highly of Justin Allegri, but he accidentally led this thing off referring to us as “The University of Berkeley.” Along with the podium, however, Lyons in fact seems obsessed with the use of Berkeley at every turn. Cal and University of California alone are not enough to him? Can’t pass up a chance to let people know we are Berkeley. I think that whole obsession is overblown, and at this point it comes across as insecure and self-obsessed. Let people call us whatever they want.

I actually think it's good if the Berkeley name also gets associated with the sports teams. Not that sports should stop being called "California" (or "Cal" for short), but making sure people know that it's also the top academic school known as UC Berkeley is not a bad thing!

Honestly, I think they should put a little "Berkeley" wordmark on the uniform too, like SMU does with Dallas.

The Berkeley name prestige goes way back. One example: In the 1958 Robert Heinlein book Have Space Suit--Will Travel, a senior scientist is talking to MIT and is demanding a full scholarship for the hero of the book, "or else I'll hang up and call Berkeley."

Being a Berkeley guy who went to MIT for grad school, I can tell you that graduate students there all knew Berkeley, and they knew Berkeley as Berkeley.

On the other hand, my dad went to Cal, and he was happy that I did too. I take it both ways!

Campus has been pushing to associate the Berkeley and Cal brand more strongly since the rebrand commission a few years ago. It's probably all part of that. Once it sticks, it helps create a more coherent marketing strategy towards the community.

Having a big “B” on letterhead, making this big deal over the Berkeley part, etc., is trying too hard. It comes across as cloying and is ineffective at unifying anything. That some know us as Berkeley and others know us as the University of California, Berkeley, Cal, California, UC Berkeley - it is all fine. It was all fine in my father’s day, and it’s just fine now. I like the multiplicity of lenses that combine to make this an unusual and special place.

We are THE University of California! Why bring us down with just the city name like we're some common UC extension site? Bureaucracy....

Tosh is a legitimately hilarious dude. That's definetly going to help with building team chemistry. I hope his high-level rizz translates to the field, and we can light it up in the ACC next year. #LetToshCook
