I don't understand why some people here still think that after the first game that we won looking good with a stud qb, Wilcox will be out of a job at the end of the year.

In the context of coaching football, CAL has been a place that was difficult at best to build a winning program. Previous lack of institutional support, money and a double workload for the head coach, coupled with Berkeley's politics, made it a location very unpopular with coaches that had a great resume. Berkeley was where coaches came to destroy their careers. Even with Tedford's success, his recruiting ultimately did him in, because his kids weren't an academic (or cultural) fit with CAL.

I'm a huge fan of Wilcox. Why, because he could have walked away from CAL to better programs many times, but chose to stay. He could have been the HC of Oregon, his alma mater, right now. He used the Oregon job to leverage CAL to put up more money for Assistant Coach salaries, and for recruiting.

Coach W was instrumental in setting up CAL Legends NIL, something no SEC coach would spend time on, they would just expect money to be there for their recruits.

It's easy from the outside as a fan to look at a situation and be unsatisfied. Having coached and knowing what Wilcox has had to deal with I tip my hat to him. And he has stellar integrity. I don't think there is a better Head Coach out there for the HC position at CAL. Wilcox is the guy and with our new Chancellor and Ron Rivera onboard, things should start changing for the better, but it will be a process.

Certainly, this was written prior to the first game. Publishing it after Saturday's game is just poor timing.

Setting Wilcox aside, let's say we have a good season and keep him.. something to be concerned about next year would be Harsin and Rolo leaving for new jobs (HC or otherwise) and JKS et al finding the exit for that reason. It would suck needing yet another new offensive staff..

As coach says, only worry about what you can control.

That goes without saying, ha. I'm just mentioning another very possible scenario (and an ironic one at that, i.e. damned if you do), given the context of what you were commenting about.. For those expecting a disappointing season that results in Wilcox being fired.. Consider this: a good season which results in Harsin and Rolo leaving as a result of their success, and what that will mean. It will be a tricky situation, and one might think Wilcox will need to *greatly* exceed expectations this year in order to keep his job, otherwise Rivera might just decide to rebuild the entire staff, rather than another offensive rebuild only.

I have not seen any comments about Wilcox losing his job after the first win of the season.

.Most disappointing: the potential last 3-4 games of the season where we have Harsin as a caretaker HC and are just running out the clock to find the next HC...

Wasn't this written before the first game?

I’ll take the timeless final quote from Jesse Miller-Gordon for $400, Bob:

“I feel like it’s worth just letting ourselves be excited until there’s reason not to be; we’re all along for the ride anyhow.”

Older guy alert: would someone please explain the Sun God comic?

I believe this is from the comic "One Piece" which was cited by JKS as one of his favorite animes. So it's become sort of the new meme of the year for the Calgorithm and by extension our community.

Thank you. So while I appreciate knowing where it’s from and why it’s here, what is it trying to say? Or, as I suspect, would that require too many layers of explanation to relay concisely? I can remain unhip and uninformed…honest.

Cal's biggest problem is probably going to be JKS being gone after 1 year, when "Oklahoma/LSU/USC (fill in the blank Power program)" needs a QB and comes by with a truck full of money.

It might not just be money (we could match dollars and convince him to stay), but Harsin and Rolo both could feasibly be gone for new gigs in which case we'd be starting over again with a new offensive staff.. which often leads to offensive player exodus.

One of them very well might take him with them.
