Hello and welcome back to Wurster Hall, where we try to sort out the signal from the noise in college football using advanced stats and metrics to evaluate football teams. This week, we’re here to learn about North Carolina State University located in Raleigh, NC.
Define “On-Campus”
We start this week with an examination of the distance from the Chancellor’s place of residence relative to their universities stadium. Chancellor Lyons of course walks barely under a mile to get up to the beautiful California Memorial Stadium, or with the assistance of his battery powered cart. All told, he could be there in a matter of minutes! And he could probably finish a Coors Light or a Modelo between Memorial Glade and the stadium (or so I’ve been told).
Now to shift over to NC State, Chancellor Howell has to travel over 5.8 miles from his house to the stadium? Technically it’s still on campus because its university owned, but man are we stretching the definition. Here’s hoping Chancellor Lyons can get to the game on time after the annual Chancellor Sleep Over that happens before every party.
I’d Like To Get Off Mr. Doeren’s Wild Ride
This past week, NC State relieved Coach Dave Doeren of his duties. Coach Doeren of course started his tenure at NC State way back in 2013 when yours truly graduated from college (wait this part is supposed to be funny not make me feel old). Anywho, Coach Doeren found somewhat modest or middling success, fluctuating between 6-8 wins typically, occasionally reaching 9, and every so often crashing out. Normally this type of success can keep you around for a while at a University (cough cough)m but NC State had enough. Here’s hoping that the new coach and NC State don’t get that classic fired coach bounce and come away successful. Now to take a big sip of this coffee and look up who the interim is…
That’s Too Many BBQs Man
Inevitably, any discussion involving North Carolina comes around to the topic of barbeque. Of course, depending on where in the state you are, you can find any number of terrible barbeque options to choose from. Maybe you like tomato based terrible barbeque. Maybe you like vinegar instead? Maybe you like a secret worse third thing (mustard? What are we doing.) Regardless, our friends at the Barbecues of the United States Wikipedia (goodness the internet can be good sometimes) helped us break down this matchup, with the Carolinas having apparently 6 regionally distinct types of barbecue while over here in California, we really only have the named Santa Maria-style barbecue. On the whole, I think California wins this one given the blending of cultures and barbecue styles that happen in our great state (yes even the mustard based ones.)
And with that, we’ve learned everything we need to learn about North Carolina. The entire internet, summed up in three charts. Hope you’re having a good Wednesday or whenever you’re reading this, And I hope you enjoy the BBQ lunch or dinner you’re going to have as a result of reading this article. Have a safe and happy Halloween, and Go Bears!

I think we may be in a lot of trouble as there are more than 50 Cook Out locations in and around Raleigh NC while there are ZERO in Berkeley, CA
I think you are being kind of hard on Carolina BBQ styles.
