The graphs will continue until morale improves. Hello and welcome to Wurster Hall, where we use Microsoft Excel to commit, as my loving UC Berkeley Math Major and Math Teacher wife calls, “crimes against mathematics.” I don’t know what she’s talking about, I put my heart and soul into this research!
What is a VTech?
We start this week with a quick statistical profile of our next matchup, the VTech Hokies. VTech Holdings Limited (an abbreviation of Video Technology Limited or simply VTech) is a Hong Kong electronics company founded in October 1976 by Allan Wong (Chi-Yun) and Stephen Leung. It is known for manufacturing cordless phones, baby monitors, and electronic learning toys, as well as providing contract manufacturing services. You might be familiar with their offerings as a child’s toy technology company. The graph above shows high investment in the Paw Patrol toy line, but don’t sleep on the popular Go!Go! Smart Wheels. Make me glad to know that McCann is over there scheming up our offense on an iPad.
Wheels Up
Next we’ll take a look at the distance from campus to the nearest airport. For those of you commuting, you’re more than likely to fly into Greensboro and commuting 149 miles to Blacksburg, that is unless you’re super duper ultra rich and can fly into VTECHS ON CAMPUS AIRPORT? WHAT. Unfortunately, that puts Virginia Tech squarely as the winner in this regard at a distance of just 0.7 miles which beats UC Berkeley’s 14 miles to Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport.
Let’s Look at Wikipedia Now
No way to sugar coat it, UC Berkeley crushes VTech with 307 wikipedia citations compared to the 50 from Blacksburg. Here’s hoping that this week this is rough air-passing yardage splits at the end of the game as well.

Next we look at a more academic comparison, looking at how the largest lecture halls match up. UC Berkeley of course has Wheeler Hall where I took History 7B, and approximately 1-session of Robert Reich’s Wealth and Poverty before I realized I wasn’t going to get off the waitlist. Oh yeah I also took Astro C10 there. Anyways, Wheeler Hall has a capacity of 750 charis while VTech has a capacity of 550 in McBryde Hall. Another point for California.

Next, we’ll compare bus fleets that serve campus. UC Berkeley is of course served by AC Transit (which I learned today has the third largest fleet of buses in California! Yay Public Transit!) which has a whopping 630 buses, including the F-Line that I accidentally took all the way to San Francisco once because I forgot to get off at Sproul Plaza. Ah memories. Blacksburg Transit on the other hand has but a fraction at 71 total buses. Booooooo. Ride public transit!

Finally, we’ll wrap with a comparison I didn’t expect to make, the number of bands at each university. At UC Berkeley, we of course have the pacesetter of college marching bands, the pride of California—the University of California Marching Band! Meanwhile, over in Blacksburg, they have two marching bands, the…Highty-Tighties and the Marching Virginians? What a fascinating experiment. How does music in-game work? Do they each get to play one song and thats it? Who plays the fight song? Who listens to the in-stadium DJ instead of the band? Oh thats all three. Anyways, like they always say, when you have two bands, you have none…
Anyways thanks again for reading to Wurster Hall and apologies for the statistical delay. I spent Monday scouring Legoland for hidden statistics and ultimately came out with a lot of expensive Lego sets. Hope to see you at Homecoming this week! Go Bears!
