Fire Wilcox now

Not tomorrow

Not in Berkeley

We should fire him in Stanford

53 straight and that may have been the worst, certainly in the bottom 5 big games I’ve witnessed. So incoherent, even with the fumbles

Third game of the season where the team has completely collapsed after things went sideways early. Don't recall this happening in previous seasons under Wilcox.

Drop a rivalry game by three scores to a 3-win team with an interim coach and you deserve to be handed a Clipper card and told to walk to Caltrain, and by the time you change at Millbrae and get BART back to Berkeley the contents of your office should be on the stoop in a box with the locks changed.

This is the worst year possible to have to be out there, but it’s never getting any better with Wilcox and this staff. Clean house, Ron. It’s a teardown. Hire a decent FCS coach and put the difference into the roster and find someone who can protect JKS.

We can't even go the decent FCS coach route because we need to pressure the UC system into allowing Cal and UCLA to pay real coaching salaries for the football staff. We need to be allowed to be competitive with the rest of the nation.

UCLA already has the go-ahead to do so from the UC Regents.

Cal does not.

Mind boggling this is not already in play.

Uncle 6: You are absolutely right. I like Wilcox personally but his ceiling is 6 wins a year. We deserve better. We MUST do better or else we will be playing in the Big Sky in a few years. Sometimes all you can do is start over and hope for the best.

I was in the NW end zone today - the speed at which 4 full sections emptied out was amazing. Wilcox may lose the locker room but the fan base (and big donors) pay the bills and we’re pretty much all checked out. Wilcox has to go - strictly business.

its not only losing the game that is sad but also the way we lose. how do you turn the ball over multiple times? how do the players dont get psyched up for big game? this is all on the coaches and wilcox is such a crappy coach. time n time again hes proven to be crappy

Honestly, the thing that bothered me the most was that we started almost every offensive drive with a penalty. Not one where the defense really made a physical play and our player was forced to hold or something, just procedural stuff. False starts, too many men in the huddle, crap like that.

Just a poorly organized team.

At least this should make Ron Rivera's decision easier.

To add insult to injury, the CalTrain broke down. The injury being some drunk guy stepping on my foot.

Based on what I’ve heard, I’m still not fully confident RR is ready to do what needs to be done, but here’s hoping.

Wilcox just lost to a rent-a-season coach. Has Wikcox ever beat an interim head coach? Wilcox has now lost to just about every terrible team and coach in Pac12 and ACC history. If your program is in turmoil, hasn’t won a conference game and looks absolutely lost, welljust wait and Wilcox will help salvage your season. Bonus points if Wilcox is coming off a bye week!!!!

I was at Cal in 2000 for Holmoes last season and I have absolutely no doubt that if Holmoes 2000 Cal teamed lined up to play Wilcox’s Cal teams of 2019-2025 they would absolutely beat Wilcox’s Cal team by 10 points

Cal football has just officially gutted me. 130+ penalty yards (13 penalties), 3 fumbles leading to 21 points, and just terrible coaching from the jump. Stanford is really bad this year, but they looked like the team going to a bowl, not the GBs. The odds of a win against SMU does not look pronising at all. For my sanity, I have to stop following my beloved Bears until such time as they have a viable coaching staff and program. For a year setup for 8+ wins, JW has pulled another 6-6 season out of his A*S. SO. VERY. SAD.

I don't understand why we say "players like him" like it's a coaching virtue, when pretty much all of the most successful football coaches in the history of the game are notorious hardasses who players begrudgingly respect and play their asses off for with extreme discipline.

deehart's avatar

Perhaps likability is more important nowadays, with players free to leave the team. Of course, even if it’s important, it’s not sufficient.

He was so likable that almost his entire roster of offensive skill players left last offseason.

Players are more likely to stay if they're in a successful program than a program with a likable coach, and unlikable coaches run the most successful programs pretty much exclusively

I’ve definitely read that statement in ways that wasn’t sarcasm on this site. Most of them were more along the lines of, “too bad its not working because the players like him”.

Maybe, but no one is saying "players like him" as a reason why Wilcox should not be fired.

I don't think anybody is saying it's a reason Wilcox specifically shouldn't be fired, I am saying that people generally view being liked by players as a positive quality for a coach to have

Actually heard this more than a few times today in the Grove.

There’s a defeatist segment of the fanbase that think because there are so many openings this year we should keep Wilcox because no one we can get would be any better.

Which, of course, is a patently absurd approach.

mrjpark's avatar

"We should keep losing because we may not win" is the most loser mentality behavior I have ever heard in my life.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

It’s totally ridiculous. There are always young, hungry coaches ready to take a HC spot at a P4 program. Either HCs at G5 or FCS or top assistants at other P5s. Cal just needs to roll the dice on one, because it’s now very clear that Wilcox ain’t it.

Expand full comment
Justbear's avatar

There are many openings and many coaches are moving or getting cut, or not being retained by new HCs. It's a perfect time to make the move.

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Even if there were 150 new openings, Cal should make it 151.

9 years, the past 3 of which he’s had a future 1st round NFL draft pick at QB.

Wilcox has found a way to waste generational talents at the most important position in all of sports.
