Cal football lost the commitment of 2023 DB RJ Jones. Jones was the first commit of the 2023 class for the Bears back in February.
“It was a really tough decision, probably the second hardest decision of my life,” Jones said. “Leaving Alemany was the first because of my relationships there but this was hard too for same reason, I have great relationships with the coaches at Cal. It was never one guy I talked with, it was the whole staff.
"I talked to Tre Watson last night when I de-committed but I talk with coach (Terrence) Brown, Marshall (Cherrington) and Benji (Palu) all the time too. I love those guys but I felt it was in my best interest to take a step back and really re-evaluate everyone equally and the only way you can really do that is an an un-committed player.”
Jones was adamant Cal is still very high on his list.
“I made a point to tell them I still wanted to be recruited by them and they’re in for that as well,” Jones said. “I love Cal and they’re still a very good option for me. There’s just a lot going on with teams changing conferences and I don’t know where Cal is going to be in a couple of years.
“You hear different things but this is something I’ve been thinking about for the last few months. I have more schools reaching out as well so this gives me a chance to slow things down, play out the season and then re-evaluate what I want to do later in the year.”
We wish RJ the best in whatever decision he makes for his playing career.
I missed part that forced this kid to commit in the first place. He clearly doesn't know what he wants to do, except that Cal is no longer good enough for him. All his equivocating just means that he's not willing to be honest about why he's decommited. Another immature egocentric HS football player.
So, speculation but, one does wonder whether the fact after RJ became the first commit, perhaps hoping to see other four stars join in, all that have followed are threes........
