St. Mary's guard Aidan Mahaney enters transfer portal; could Cal be in the mix?
Mahaney showed interest in the Golden Bears before committing to the Gaels.
Some news that should raise eyebrows in Berkeley: St. Mary’s guard Aidan Mahaney has entered the transfer portal.
As a sophomore, Mahaney averaged 13.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game this season, shooting 36% from three. Mahaney made first team all West Coast Conference and would be the first major guard pickup for Mark Madsen.
One rumor from a portal insider? The California Golden Bears.
Cal was rumored to be in the mix for Mahaney during his high school recruiting cycle, but the moribund state of Mark Fox’s program left him looking elsewhere for a better place to play.
The likely favorite is probably the Michigan Wolverines. Michigan’s new assistant is former St. Mary’s assistant Justin Joyner, who recruited Mahaney to Moraga.
Expect plenty of other bidders for Mahaney. Cal will need to continue to stockpile on NIL money to get the players they want.
Luckily another $100,000+ has come through the latest Cal Legends Collective drive so far, but more is probably needed! Donate now if you can.
I want him bad. Maybe his shine has worn off after an inefficient sophomore year but he's got big star potential. Like Tyson, he's a tough competitor and not afraid of the spotlight.
Optimistic, but we’ll see. But at the very least it’s good to be in the conversation again. Fox was a repellant for these local kids.
