Here's more ASU Transfer Portal news. Jayden Daniels is obviously leaving, and, another ASU QB entered the portal, Nathan Manning. ASU really screwed things up with the recruiting violations. I don't understand why all the assistants are getting bounced but why Herm can stay. He knew all about it. In any event, it sounds like they are going to lose a bunch of schollies and bowl eligibility. With new assistants and less scholly players and no bowl appearances, it's easy to understand why some of their kids are moving on to greener pastures. https://247sports.com/Season/2022-Football/TransferPortal/?institutionkey=24088
Welp, per another site, Cal has distributed its full allotment of schollies. So. it would take a player or two to retire (medical or other), transfer, or quit for Cal to have a schollie to give. Perhaps Daniels doesn't want to wait around for that possibility.
Now, if a schollie does become available ~ hell yes offer Daniels!!
He is not choosing Cal, not with the system in place here. Daniels is a dynamic RPO dude, and he would be coming to place where the head coach has a conservative, run-first sit on a lead mentality. When you add in questions along the offensive line and a bunch of unproven receivers, it points to him going somewhere else.
Washington State with De Lara leaving or UCLA seem like the more likely candidates, although he would have to beat out DTR for immediate playing time at UCLA. Not likely.
He's not coming to Cal...probably not UCLA either with Martyn there. But the word is out on Cal's struggles and conservative scheme....players with NFL aspirations don't want to play for Wilcox.
I actually think Plummer is a better pure passer and could be efficient in Musgrave's system.
C'mon man..."word is out", this is internet fodder, no? For a brief 2 - 3 games this past year, Cal's offense was putting up amazing numbers. Sure it was against poor defenses but w/ an additional year of seasoning, I expect the offense to be more consistent this year. And, that is taking into account that many of the skill positions will have 1st time starters.
Well, sure GEAT, we all hope the offense is more consistent next year.
But the evidence is entirely to the contrary - with the type of senior laden offense you wait years for, we largely underachieved and were again amongst the worst in the P12...we may in fact be better, but it's highly questionable.
Not any players, but people I used to work with in the Athletic Dept who are still somewhat dialed in. Just what I'm hearing.
Tho it's mostly just them reading the tea leaves, AND then you've got schitt like this out there...so who knows. I agree with you Rug - the talent add would be solid, but does he fit the scheme?

Right. I was just replying to Bob who said that he hoped Troy Taylor would replace Wilcox to run a more pro style offense. I liked the spread offense that Tedford ran mid 2000s.
Personally, I think that absent players with ‘playing on Sundays’ talent, ie those that can consistently win individual battles, Musgrave’s pro style O is way too easy to defend.
Going to be a parade of ugly stat lines until they start bringing in a Davis Webb, Jared Goff, Kenny Lawler, Trevor Davis, Stephen Anderson, Moe Harris, etc.
Yeah, I liked those Tedford offense because we had all the best players on the field. Those 2006-2007 teams were filled with NFL talent, and even though Nate didn't make it to the NFL after ankle injury limited his abilities, he was still a very good QB. Those Dykes era players you list all made the NFL, but for some reason Lawler, whom I thought was the best, had the shortest stint.
Not sure what to expect here. You always want to add talent and especially in the QB room. Daniels is certainly a hell of a talent. But, can he learn Musgrave's system over Spring and Fall well enough to execute it efficiently? If he came to CAL it might be disappointing to Plummer, but I don't think it would push any of our younger guys into the Transfer Portal because of his limited eligibility and his desire to turn pro. I like him but I just don't think he's a great fit for our system. In the end, coaches recruit talent who can flourish in their system's. He would be a good fit at Oregon and at Auburn.
Wow! If he did, wouldn't JPlummer then (re)enter the portal himself? If not, I'd bet Kai does. Crazy..... Is there any limit to how many times you can go in/out of the portal? Or is it like the transporter on Star Trek????
Unless the coach is completely incompetent (and I don't think Musgrave is), he'd always be making adjustments based on the talent he is handed. I think there's a strong argument that both in football and basketball, the schemes at Cal have been dialed back to accommodate the talent level. No reason Musgrave wouldn't make use of Daniels particular talents in his offense.

That's interesting. Didn't know they'd distributed them all, given the defections. Thanks for the intel, GEAT
All I can say is that something REALLY BAD must be going on at ASU to lead Daniels into the transfer portal. Any ideas what might be going on?
damn this is ruthless

Can’t tell if it’s a good thing everyone is realists or if the last 5 yearsish did a number to everyone’s hype. 🤣🤣🤣

Not so fast my friend. Musgrave adjusted to Garbers' strengths to include him running the ball and getting outside the pocket.
Cameron Ward transferred to Wazzu and put up video game numbers last year and will likely be the starter there
F-ing Tecmo bowl schitt
Yep, this would be a square peg meeting a round hole.
Exactly. It's not a scheme fit here. Plummer is the type of player we can expect from the portal...average, West Coast style pocket passer.
At UCLA, he'd have to hold off Martyn next year as well...Wazzu is an option...so is the B12.
DTR this year and Martyn next.
Garbers will be in the portal by August.
We shall see. He did already transfer from UW, and it may not be August...
But Martyn sounds like the real deal, and if EG gets beat out after DTR, there's no reason for him to be a backup QB his entire career.
Edited my comment about WASU. Cam Ward looks like the real deal. He was ranked the #4 QB prospect in the portal. WASU does not need Jayden Daniels.
He would clearly be our best QB were he to come but he seems an odd fit with our OC and system. I am skeptical but would be happy were he to come!

Where did you hear this? Have players actually told this to you? Or are you just assuming based on our performance the last two (Covid) years?
I heard it from the same people that said that defensive players didn’t want to come to play for Dykes.
Ha! Clever! I see what you did there. ;-) Lol

I couldn't tell if he was just joking or not since that post had a timestamp of 10:49 AM PT...kind of early for lunch.
If joking, it’s one of those red flag in the locker things that Roger Dorn pulled on Ricky Vaughn…
Real f-ing funny!!! ;-) ;-)
Steve’s Korean BBQ>>Musgraves Turkey and Gravy Pro Style Offense
Matt Ladrech! A baseball name I haven’t heard in a while!
I have no idea why y'all are so fixated on Troy Taylor.
We have the most pro style offense right now. More than Troy Taylor's offense
Unfortunately, pro style offenses need professional players if they’re to operate at a high level...we don’t have those.
Right. I was just replying to Bob who said that he hoped Troy Taylor would replace Wilcox to run a more pro style offense. I liked the spread offense that Tedford ran mid 2000s.

Sure we should take him. He possesses a more varied skill set than Plummer and is highly mobile.
Would I take Jayden Daniels? Hmmm, let me think….HELL YES!
Wow! If he did, wouldn't JPlummer then (re)enter the portal himself? If not, I'd bet Kai does. Crazy..... Is there any limit to how many times you can go in/out of the portal? Or is it like the transporter on Star Trek????
he would be an upgrade over Plummer
It seems like there isn't a limit.
they can transfer as often as they want but only one of those transfers is without having to sit the next year
It's called one time transfer rule. Pretty self explanatory and everyone knows it I don't think they need a link to official rules.
look it up yourself
https://bfy.tw/Sa7m
He wants to go where he can shine for a year and then enter the draft. He's not playing two more years unless he shits the bed this year.
with Cal's offense that is a possibility
What? Shining or shitting the bed?
Shitting the bed.
Not sure Cal is the right program for an offensive skill-position player to choose to showcase themselves...
Passing history doesn’t equal fit.
Or it could mean coaches are catering to the skill sets of their roster. History doesn’t project future of player performance esp in football.
