Cal kicker Derek Morris enters transfer portal

Will the California Golden Bears try to add another kicker in the portal to compete with Kyle Cunanan

Some transfer portal news that happened during the holidays: Cal kicker Derek Morris decided to seek a new home.

Morris started seeing playing time midway through the 2024 season at NC State, as Ryan Coe had trouble with consistency through the first half of the year. Both Morris and Coe split duties, with Morris taking on the majority of shorter kicks, while Coe took most of the longer ones, but each had some tough misses at the worst times.

Morris knocked in 11 of 15 kicks, including going 6 of 9 from 30 to 49 yards, and seemed to be in good position to potentially win the starting job in the 2025 offseason. His loss is a surprise, but the portal can certainly bring the Bears new talent.

Cal did land a new kicker in Kyle Cunanan from Charlotte, but you’d have to imagine the Bears would want another kicker to encourage competition at this position. We will see what the offseason brings.
