For a long time afterwards he belonged to IPTAY (I Pay Ten A Year) which a combo booster organization and actual fund raising effort. (Numbers were much smaller back then.) Not only was the money significant over a large fan base, but it kept alums/boosters/players/fans in general connected. The *brand* today is supposedly so valuable. Someone should come up with a catchy acronym like that.
The rival USC Gamecocks' version was ABAM (A Buck A Month) which I admit I thought flowed better was not quite so cool. I always credited (without any numbers to back it up) that connection with being the backbone of support that justified them being in the SEC (certainly not the quality of football).
NIL is the next wave. Someone should be able to come up with a catchy umbrella name/slogan... (You support a place with unconventional conventions. You support a place with professors who profess. Who do you support? US Berkeley... naah.)
Yes, that would be awesome. That broad base not only keeps the whales from dictating terms (think media, for example), but, as you point out, gives supporters a sense of ownership (within everyone's means). I think USC ran a "Great Leap Forward" (my term for it) campaign. Here is the latest campaign:
Donated to 3 teams
Labor Day is last day of the matching challenge!
You can choose any team to donate to and any amount will help
Go Bears!
Donation Round 2. Cal Fans - Let's do this!
I hope some of our well-heeled alums can assist in making up the shortfall.
As far as fundraising for Cal Athletics goes, how is this going?
Not sure, I'm sure we'll get those numbers at some point.
IMHO.
We should all give what we may be able to do on a regular basis- either yearly or monthly.
I'd love to see us build a grassroots middle class base with the occasional boost from whales.
Agreed. It's obviously a new era in Cal athletics. And for the season, I'm kinda thinking weekly. I like giving a little more when the Bears win!
Positive reinforcement. It often works. LOL
Yes, just think what $100 a year would if just 30% of alumni did so.
I could also see splitting donations between current expenses and an endowment.
My dad played for Clemson years ago.
