Cal flips College of San Mateo DB Ja’ir Smith from TCU on Early Signing Day
The California Golden Bears now have two instant impact junior college defensive backs to restock the Takers.
The Cal pass defense had some tough times in 2023, struggling to defend the pass and maintain pursuit, particularly in one-on-one situations. Instant additions were definitely needed to bring the Golden Bears back to respectability.
Cal got one pleasant surprise today, when the Golden Bears flipped Ja’ir Smith from TCU on Signing Day. Smith also had major offers from Oregon State, Washington and Houston. Smith put up 36 tackles, 1 sack, and 3 interceptions this season at the College of San Mateo. He played both cornerback and safety.
Along with Isaiah Crosby, that gives the Bears two of the top five JUCO safety prospects (according to 247Sports) in this recruiting class. Cal also holds commitments from incoming freshmen Brooklyn Cheek and Dayton Aupiu, giving the Bears four defensive backs in this recruiting class.
Smith was ranked as the 22nd best JUCO prospect by 247Sports Composite and the second best safety. Here is his Hudl highlights.
Welcome to Cal Ja’ir! Go Bears!
How fast is he? You must be able to stay with the plethora of sub-4:sprinters from Clemson, Florida state, ect.
Woot secondary reinforcement!
