California, preaching on the burning shore

California, I'll be knocking on the golden door

Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light

Rising up to paradise, I know, I'm gonna shine

I have to say those helmets look awesome. This game against Wake Forest is absolutely critical if Cal wants to go to a bowl game this year.

The helmet decals are sweet. This Wake Forest team is very good, only loss is to Miami. It will be a challenging game, but now, after a very disappointing start, the offense looks like the real deal and we have a chance to be competitive. I hope we have a full stadium Saturday night. Go Bears!

Go Bears💙🏈💛I may have to return my degree to Cal if my spelling doesn’t improve 🥲

Such a funny and seemingly arbitrary tie-in. As a Golden Bear and Deadhead I gladly accept and welcome it. But why now? Also who is paying whom for this? And why debut this at a game in North Carolina?

Duh, not sure how I missed that available piece of information. thanks

I have no insider info, but I'd guess Rich Lyons influence has a lot to do with this.

The Spinners will be spinning near the entrance to section J.

Bill Walton would be proud!

Aw, man. Bill seemed to LOVE coming to Berkeley to call hoops. I hope he's looking down from the hardwood in heaven and enjoying the show. Rest in peace, Bill.

Definitely pockets of kids out there vibing on the Dead. Lift operators at Sugar Bowl are playing the Dead and reggae pretty frequently.

Oregon did the same thing, so it was all about selling merch. Same for Cal. But I doubt that any current students will buy it unless their parents or grandparents were deadheads.

I am 42 years old but don't listen to music much, and have never heard of this band. I do like the merchandise so I might buy some though.

What rock do you live under?

As an elder millennial, the Grateful Dead skipped over a chunk of our generation.

I think this is another heartbreaking work of staggering genius on the part of the branding team. So perfect, and only Cal could pull it off. Absolutely love it.

Coach Tosh: “What the hell does steal your face mean?!”

GM Ron: “I have no idea”

Oski: “Y’all gotta leave the stadium once in a while”

Sweet! Can someone share a purchase link?

Will the Cal Band bust out “Friend of the Devil” for the Demon Deacons with some fitting lyrical tweaks? More of an acoustic campfire sleeper but still

I happen to be wearing my “Grateful Slug” UCSC t-shirt today. Lol. That’s where the archive is housed.

Saw Dead live many times in their hayday, including at the Berkeley Community Theater and The Greek. Their music lacks driving, high energy adrenaline needed in football. Rolling grooves, loose syncopation, and jazz like improv are, IMO, out of place in a football context.

I don't think that matters. They all recognize the 60s hippie psychedelic style. I think young people will like the cool looking retro style even if they don't know the band.

ImTheGuy's avatar

I think you’re overthinking this one.

The best football players listen to relaxing music pregame not Metallica…but Metallica could be another Bay Area collab fwiw!!

This GD partnership is long overdue and a perfect fit for CAL BERKELEY 💯

This is how you extend the CAL Athletic’s tent beyond just sports and football fans. I have friends flying up for this game solely bc they’re Deadheads not football or even CAL fans

J S's avatar

Perhaps. As a marketing strategy, a good move--esp. in Bay Area. However, I wonder how many players could name a single Dead song or even know of the band?

bearspot's avatar

Perhaps it's the sound of the new Pat McCann offense just groovin' and rollin'
