Cal football will welcome kicker Ryan Coe and punter Bobby Engstler in 2024
There will be new kickers on the field for the California Golden Bears come 2024.
Cal did have significant kicking turmoil in 2023. Michael Luckhurst lost the starting job in September after some rough outings, and Mateen Bhagani ended up transferring after the season to UCLA.
On the kicking front, Cal landed the commitment of Ryan Coe.
Ryan Coe has showcased his skills in 42 collegiate games spanning five seasons at Delaware (2019-21), Cincinnati (2022), and North Carolina (2023). Coe made 48-of-61 field goals (.786), and had a strong kickoff game, with 116 touchbacks and 61.0 yards per kick.
Coe's standout performance occurred during his 2022 junior year at Cincinnati, earning him second-team All-American Athletic Conference honors. Setting a Bearcats' single-season accuracy record, he scored 101 points by connecting on 19-of-23 field goal attempts and converting all 44 extra-point tries.
Coe had to redshirt at North Carolina last season due to injury. This will be his final season of eligibility. Expect Coe and Luckhurst to battle for placekicking opportunities.
Likewise, on the punting front, 2024 prospect Bobby Engstler is coming via Florida after being offered a full scholarship.
Englster could potentially be Cal’s first combination kicker, as he handled punting, placekicking and kickoffs in his high school career and succeeded at all three, being named the #2 punter by Kohl’s Kicking.
Engstler is the most consistent punter in the 2024 class. He won the punt competition at the National Scholarship Camp in July of 2023 and the Underclassman Challenge in January of 2023. He also showed command of his body on field goals at both events. He scored 34/36 points on field goals in July. In December, he scored 14/15 points on field goals, 101.8 points on kickoffs, and 103.2 points on punts.
His senior tape is available via Hudl.
With Lachlan Wilson returning and Coe likely handling kicking duties this season, Engstler might be a candidate for a redshirt this year, but there is the possibility he could find his way into a specific position.
Looks like the kicking game could be a strength in 2024. Fingers, or more appropriately toes, crossed.
