He apparently was given his release by Cal several months ago so this shouldn't be a surprise to the coaching staff. He never cracked the starting lineup at ND, but is still highly regarded. Boise plays ND this year so maybe he wanted a chance to go against his old teammates to show them up?
My gut reaction was that he got more NIL money from Boise, not because Boise has more NIL money, but he may be CB1 in their NIL allotment but lower down on Cal such that the position may get more money at Cal, but not necessarily every individual is making more here. But it also just may not be a fit for whatever reason. As NIL starts to crowd out other factors when deciding on a school, there will probably be more players who don't like the overall experience they get at their chosen school.
My grandson was a javelin thrower and wanted to come to Cal.
but his preferred major was not available. So he enrolled at UC Santa Barbara which did have it. By the way, he became an All American thrower in his Soph year.
It is my understanding that it wasn't NIL based. It was a personal choice based upon something Cal (and many other top universities) couldn't offer him. Having had my own kid and her friends go through this process, I can tell you that young people choose colleges for some really interesting reasons. But it's their choice and I wish them well.
Yeah. In the past, players committed based on schools, coaches, experiences. They thought hard during the recruiting process and chose the school they liked the most. Now, maybe not everybody, but most choose school based on which school pays the most money. We'll see many unhappy players.
“First, I’d like to thank God who gave me way more than those guys who didn’t make the cuts. Then I’d like to thank Coach — uh, Coach…. Uh, Coach Wilcox! Thats it! for giving me the opertunity to play at this prestidigalous university. Finally, after much though and prayer and consultation with my agent, tax attorney and manager, I have decided to follow the dollar to Boise State, who never let up in their pursuit of me, even after the portal closed, and who has me doing a spot for King Soopers before the weekend.”

Even when the transfer portal is closed, we have to be ready to lose players
Amazes me how a smaller Boise State with less money frequently out preforms Cal football amd other bigger colleges.
It exemplifies Cal and other schools terrible management.

Unfortunately, Geoff, the preferred major of most new student athletes is $$$$....
It depends on the sport. Track andField , swimming, rugby, rowing, etc. get very little if any NIL money.

Well, how do you explain a football player choosing Cal over Notre Dame? That must be a shock for most people outside of Cal fans.
Maybe the player was not going to start at Notre Dame, or he didn't like the coaches...could be a million reasons I suspect.
Yup 1$$$$$$$ reasons..
Then any of those million reasons can be said at him at Cal too.
Maybe easier academic requirements.
And less else to do
don't let the door hit you on the way out!
jk, good luck to him
Is a 'Farewell' letter forthcoming?
Sure, I’ll write it for him:

Fiat Lux, baby!
