The trick in college recruiting is to beat out powerhouse programs like Georgia, USC, not Washington State and certainly not Ivy League colleges. Cal did that with players like DeSean Jackson and Keenan Allen when Jeff Tedford was coach and Demetrius Robertson, who later transferred to Georgia, under Sonny Dykes. So far, Wilcox is zip in this category. Every once in a while you get a 3-star athlete who blossoms in college and the pros -- Cameron Jordan, Tyson Alualu -- but sometimes you get all-world high school players who flop -- Zach Kline.
Chuck Muncie. He pretty much attended zero classes at Cal and got credit for some classes at Santa Clara that he never attended. He was the running threat that set up Steve Bartkowski and Joe Roth during 1974 and 1975 seasons. If you remember the 1975 Big Game, he pretty much tore the Stanford defense apart in the second half. Final score: 48-15, missing the Rose Bowl by a hair. Muncie scored four touchdowns, threw a TD pass to Wesley Walker and ran for 166 yards. Roger Theder was in charge of babysitting Muncie to no avail. Muncie cost Mike White his job when the truth came out.
David Shaw has been a great recruiter for Stanford, except for one year, but he's been kneecapped by injuries, the pros and the transfer portal. He hasn't gotten anything from the portal since Stanford doesn't admit transfers. Brennan Scarlett played a year for Stanford, setting Cal fans' teeth on edge, but he was a graduate student.
Virtually all of Cal's top recruits in recent years were recruited by Jeff Tedford. Justin Wilcox has had a handful, all of whom haven't really played that much yet -- Michael Sturtivant, Jermaine Terry, Jaydn Ott, Mavin Anderson, Kai Millner. Will Craig was offered by Notre Dame, so that was a good score, but he has transferred.

Go Bears! As the first in my school to go to Cal I can attest to it being a big deal. Congrats Ryan! Best choice I ever made. Led to all the others.
