Cal got a surprise after practice on Saturday with the commitment of Ryan McCulloch. The 6-foot-2 Defensive End plays at Rio Honda Prep School and is from Arcadia, California. He is the first player from his high school to play football at the P5 level.

McCulloch held offers from Boise State, Colorado, Washington State, San Diego State and a few Ivy Leagues.

Welcome to Berkeley, Ryan!

The trick in college recruiting is to beat out powerhouse programs like Georgia, USC, not Washington State and certainly not Ivy League colleges. Cal did that with players like DeSean Jackson and Keenan Allen when Jeff Tedford was coach and Demetrius Robertson, who later transferred to Georgia, under Sonny Dykes. So far, Wilcox is zip in this category. Every once in a while you get a 3-star athlete who blossoms in college and the pros -- Cameron Jordan, Tyson Alualu -- but sometimes you get all-world high school players who flop -- Zach Kline.
