Cal guard Devin Askew enters transfer portal
The Bears will need to restock their guard lineup.
Devin Askew is one of three Cal players who entered the transfer portal on Monday, joining Grant Newell and ND Okafor. The Cal combo guard will be looking for his fourth school in five years after spending time at Kentucky and Texas.
Askew struggled with injury during his time in Berkeley, playing only 13 games in 2022-23 due to sports hernia surgery and six games in 2023-24 due to a foot issue. Askew was a top scorer last season but deferred more for a much stronger Cal team this year. He probably could have competed for significant playing time next season, but it might not have been a given he could start, which might be what Askew is looking for as he nears the end of his time in college.
With Jalen Cone and Keonte Kennedy out of eligibility and Jaylon Tyson a potential NBA draft pick, Cal likely has only Jalen Celestine and Rodney Brown Jr. returning amongst its guards who made significant contributions. Incoming freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson is almost certain to enter the rotation as well.
We wish Devin well in the next destination on his journey.
It's hard to know Devin's motivation for moving around so much, especially this time. You'd figure he needs to finally plant somewhere to get a real shot at the NBA. I can't imagine his NIL money will be so big that it's worth moving again. But I appreciate his time and effort with us.
Is it possible Devin decided that his fortunes (literal) would be best parlayed by another team who would take a shot at him as a graduate transfer?
