I was very bully on their chances to make a push for the bubble…re-evaluating that after tonight.
The L isn’t as much the problem as how they came about it…shredded by opponents 3’s again, missed free throws, and disappearing acts by key rotation members Celestine/Newell…and NO impact by your backup big, Okafor…a puzzling lack of toughness in the paint by Aimaq…and then of course Askew’s turnovers.
We’re absolutely better and this season will have plenty of fun moments…but they got run off the court by the team that’s predicted to finish 8th in the WCC. Problematic loss for their Tourney profile, which was always a long shot, TBH. But I was hopeful.
I'm always curious with a guy like Askew playing so poorly but it's early in the season... do you pull a guy like that or see how if he plays better. My frustration says pull him but maybe that's not the best answer ?
Nah, this is not a Tournament team. It was a big ask, and they’ll be better than last year, but UOP isn’t very good and they’re kicking the schitt out of this Cal team. They’re tougher, faster and more confident.
Oh, absolutely. We’re already better and there will be some real fun times. I already really like this team and I have real faith in Madsen and this staff to coach these kids up. Looking forward to seeing the kids in San Juan Capistrano over Thanksgiving. And they’re still missing Kennedy, who’s their best on-ball defender and an athletic slasher that is key to their O. They’ll be better.
BUT, a small sliver of Chitwood thought they could go really go from 3-29 to 20+ wins and a visit to the Bubble, and that dream took a real hit tonight. Now you probably HAVE to get a couple out of at Butler, v Ole Miss, v SDSU to get to 20…based on what we saw tonight, THAT could be tough.
But again, from where we’ve been, this is still going to be a fun and glorious year.
Man ! I like your summary ! And I also kind of hoped against hope we would be some Cinderella team and surprise everyone. Having said that I now remembered that we are Cal and the lesson is we aren't allowed to have nice things
These announcers can't be serious. Why are they still making excuses for Mark Fox. That man was a terrible coach and should remain far away from the game of basketball
Askew is going to be a tough watch this whole season. Hopefully other guards start to step up and take minutes away from him. Other than that not much to complain about with this team
Cal basketball has lots of work to do to get over the past 5 years. A realistic goal for this season should be finishing above .500
