Who takes the last shot? I predict Grant.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Good play design but Grant can't connect

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Oh man Jalen. Way too fast on that.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

There's the Grant we know and love.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

There’s the Shepherd we know...getting lost on D & leaving a shooter wide open for a 3.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

39-38 Cal. Celestine connects for a couple to threes and there is a tiny bit of rhythm. We can steal this game from SH.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Tied at 23 at the 4 minute timeout. Kelly 6-for-6 from the field. Both teams struggling to get any flow.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

I will continue to have hope. Outcome is not preordained.

Jordan Shepherd gives you nothing. He can’t shoot, can’t defend & he turns it over. Brutal.

Close to a victory, maybe 1-2 made shots away. Kind of a moral victory but we are now 2-4. If we're lucky we might be a .500 team.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Don’t mean to harp on the kid, but if Shepherd is gonna continue to go 3-13 w/ more to’s than FGM yet still get big minutes at the wing position over Alajiki, Bowser & Roberson, Anyanwu, then there’s really no reason to watch this team bc Fox isn’t developing the underclass men.

Plus, like Foreman, he's just an undersized defender against a team like SH of midsize athletes. The little montage FS1 did coming out of a commercial break near the end to show Hall's offensive highlights, they all had Shepherd as the beaten defender.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Yup... or Kuany getting beat off the dribble.

OskiOfTarth's avatar

I mean to harp on the kid. He’s not working out The experiment is a failure. Time to move on.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Now that Thiemann is only getting 5-10 minutes a night, and is actually not killing the team when he's out there, Shepherd and his 36+/ night are the new target for WFC ire!!

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Still room aboard the Lars train :-)

Seriously, though, his limited minutes and role tonight were ideal. You could tell he was not trying to create on the offensive end. Set some high screens, use his body on defense, and don't force anything.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

So, he had 1 board & 2 blocks in 7 mins, which is fine. Last year, he had half that production in twice the minutes.

Shepherd is worse, tho, bc he gets the usage & the shot volume. 32+ mpg, <35% shooting, poor D, and 14 turnovers to 11 assists. Your go-to guy doesn’t even belong in the Conference.

For some reason I had no doubt that we would blow it at the end. We just don’t have the talent. A moral victory- yeah. Curious to see if this gives the team confidence that they can compete or crushes their motivation. And of course I still watch (or at least record and fast forward)

Classic Cal... down 1 in the double bonus, shoot a 3.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

It was a good play design. Grant got a good look.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Ya, I wasn’t too down on that call....they get the wide open jumper. It’s classic Cal in that he missed the open look.

Players got to execute...there’s a reason why this is the worst stretch of basketball in program history, and it’s not entirely on the coaches. Kelly is really the only guy that even sniffs the rotation on an elite team.

concernedparent's avatar

Just some of the worst guard play I've seen at Cal. Brown is only one that gives you something.

concernedparent's avatar

Well, Shepard gives us some good acting too.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

True..but the ref gave him one bump - but whistled him on 2nd

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Agreed...and to be honest, he’s more of a facilitator & defensive presence...it’s just he’s the only PG on the roster, which is inexcusable.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Just an awful miss by Celestine with 19 seconds on the shot clock. Yuck.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Where’s Thorpe & the O’Dowd kids...still hurt?

CalBear91's avatar

We are certainly in this game. Not overmatched. Seton Hall is a mid-level Pac 12 team. Bears can win this if they begin to score a bit from outside. Haven't seen Foreman, is he injured?

Scoopdreams's avatar

I thought Hyder would be better than what we have seen from him so far at Cal. Averaged 9pts/3ast at Fresno as a Freshman. Thought he would have more scoring/playmaking.

concernedparent's avatar

Word is that he has nagging injuries. But yeah, he's been really bad.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

He’s hasn’t shown he’s a P12 ball player.

PawlOski's avatar

We've reached the point where no context is really necessary. The outcome is already clear.

PawlOski's avatar

So far, so good. I may eat my words.
