I went to the game last night (my first since the days of Leon Powe) and my observations as a non-expert.

First, Cal was very lucky that the game ended up being that close. They did not play like that.

Second, Cal had WAY, WAY too many turnovers.

Third, Cal had WAY too many fouls.

Fourth, UTEP did a far better job getting decent shots around the basket. Cal had too many poor shots under the basket; some even looked like the players were just throwing the ball up and hoping that they got lucky or got fouled.

Even though this is only the fifth game under Madsen, I would have hoped for a big improvement in turnovers and fouls. If we don't improve significantly, I would guess that we are looking at a ten win season at best.

I did enjoy watching Madsen on the sidelines. He roamed back and forth, shouted instructions to the players, and used hand gestures for plays. Really animated. Also, JSerra has a really nice gym.

I hope that Cal plays better than last night, otherwise this wil be a long season.

It's too bad the Saturday game isn't earlier in the day, in which case maybe one could do a Cal basketball/football twofer. Looked like an interesting place to watch a "big time" college basketball game. Only true hoop fans would dare to enter The Pavilion.

True. I think the team is going to get better. I know Madsen is a great coach. But I’m also concerned because the competition is going to be stiffer coming up.

We’re absolutely going to be better. The injuries are a bummer, as Askew and Celestine unfortunately missed extended time last year too. But we’ll cause some problems come Jan/Feb/Mar.

PawlOski's avatar

Dude just called us Stanford. Find him.

That was the 2nd time...WTF!

HOLY CANNOLI WHAT A DUNK IM SORRY MONTY

PawlOski's avatar

I hope we have another little run left in us.

TD_24's avatar

i hate these referees, adding years to this game

PawlOski's avatar

We may not be great yet, but these games have been entertaining.

PawlOski's avatar

Tyson has not looked great tonight. How many turnovers does he have?

bigaddi's avatar

Bench and young guys looking much better today, more prepared and much more confident

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

That’s a good sign.

PawlOski's avatar

We want Bradley! We want Bradley!

TD_24's avatar

Bears rapid 6-0 run out of half!

PawlOski's avatar

ND has a surprisingly smooth stroke at the line.

PawlOski's avatar

Didn’t know Gus had that tool in his belt.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Brown and Larson are the two biggest surprises from the box score.

bigaddi's avatar

Cals offense is a lot of standing around and waiting for the ball. Allows for UTEP to overpressure on ball and off ball as nobody can drive past or backdoor cut

PawlOski's avatar

I guess Cone has a green light.

GoBears's avatar

Our zone defense kinda sucks

PawlOski's avatar

The reparte of these is announcers is, uh, distracting.

KetamineCal's avatar

UTEP coach's face looking too memeable there.

KetamineCal's avatar

Can someone strip a layer of wax off the court? Dudes are sliding like it's a bowling alley.

Ynot Cal's avatar

Newell is playing like he's high lol

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

That’s back-to-back games.

bigaddi's avatar

Baseline out of bounds plays have been terrible so far this season. Unsure if its cuz of how they are designed or executed but either way something that needs to be worked on

bigaddi's avatar

Best and most confident Brown has looked

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Stat line definitely says so…I’ll ruin my day and break down game film later. He’s got some game - development of Brown, Vlad and Okafor, and maybe some run for Curtis become key aspects of this season.

Gobears512's avatar

Tyson LOOKS like a strong basketball player. I don't love the hair - but then I'm an mid-forties white guy so I resent any guy with a pony tail.

I respect the self-awareness

heyalumnigo's avatar

Heh..just before the game started the announcers said that Mark Fox is a good coach but Cal had a lot of injuries last year.

Ynot Cal's avatar

1 of them also called Cal, "Stanford" LOL!

bigaddi's avatar

Hard to understand why this bullshit is still being spewed despite him being fired

heyalumnigo's avatar

I guess the announcers aren't going to talk shit about a coach.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Nope. But we can - he was a clown, on and off the court.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

No Askew, no Kennedy - 2 primary ball handlers.

bigaddi's avatar

Aimaq has been so underwhelming

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

He’s definitely an improvement in some areas over previous bigs under Fox, but agreed - I was hoping for more. Dude won DPOY 2x?!? Not seeing it.

Now this is….sicko stuff. I’m here for it
