Rushing the field with everyone was a blast. Love this tradition

freespeechlover's avatar

Yep. It was great. And it was not raining!

Ben's avatar

I’d entertain the argument for the OttTrond Co-Players of the Game. Huge game for the two of them, and Cal keeps the Axe!

Geoff Wahl's avatar

How about the Offensive line? If it wasn't for those guys OttTrond wouldn't have had their success.

BearlyThere's avatar

Watching Wilcox watch Ott… lot of affection and clear pride; he was beaming. Do like the guy as a human being.

Gobears512's avatar

.... I agree... which is why watching us suck so many times is so painful.

BearlyThere's avatar

Yup

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly! He seems an incredibly likable guy.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

Heard Knowlton for first time. Sounds like he's from back east. He was talking up Wilcox. Honestly, I hope he's right and this season begins a turn around.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Knowlton has that 2 year extension all drawn up and in his back pocket ready for Wilcox to sign if we win next Saturday against ucla

KetamineCal's avatar

Let's not lose sight of the important things like I TOUCHED THE AXE!

MCBear's avatar

Stanford is Bear Territory!

napabear's avatar

Still alive for a bowl. Hopefully the Bruins shot their bolt against $¢

GoldenSD81's avatar

Solid and methodical win. Reminded me a lot of the 2008 Big Game win, even if the score was closer in margin today than it was in 2008.

I am not the biggest Wilcox supporter and he falls well short as a HC, IMO, but I do respect that he beats Stanford. He should have a 5 game winning streak but 4-1 in the last 5 and 4-3 overall isn’t bad at all.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Joe Kapp, bad coach but 3-2 in Big Games, Wilcox bad coach but 4-3 in Big Games, so they both have special places in my heart.

FiatSlug's avatar

Kind of weird, isn't it, that those two coaches should have winning records vs Stanford but Bruce Snyder should be winless.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.

Gobears512's avatar

I agree... I just wish we could go 4-1 to start... and then continue 4-1 ... that'd be nice... not Cal...but nice.

Mark's avatar

If it makes you feel any better, Tedfords 8-2 Bulldogs just lost to a 3-7 New Mexico team that is dead last in their conference. Tedford’s Cal teams always dropped a random game for no good reason and seems like he carried the tradition to Fresno.

Justbear's avatar

How does it make us feel any better? I wish nothing but success for Coach Tedford.

Mark's avatar

I was just trying to point out that Cal has never had the perfect coach. I love Tedford too, but Cal teams have always had some kind of flaw. I think that’s why we all keep watching. To see how they overcome their own obstacles. Wilcox’s teams just seem like they’re needing to turn the corner just a little bit more, but never quite do it.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

Many teams fall to trap games. Even the Pros.

GoldenSD81's avatar

It doesn’t make me feel better and it doesn’t surprise me.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Agreed.

He seems a good dude. Maybe he figures it out.

Justbear's avatar

Spavital hire was a good one. He can continue to coach up Mendoza. Now Spav needs to bring in his own WR coach. Peeler is an easy choice but anyone better than Toler would be nice.

Then Wilcox needs to let go of Tre Watson or other DB coach and hire ST Coordinator.

Toohandy's avatar

What's your problem with Toler? How differently would you coach up the WR's? Grizzel, for example, was a raw rookie walk on and look at him now.

mrjpark's avatar

It would be nice if we could run screens

Justbear's avatar

Have you seen any blocking from our WRs?

GoldenSD81's avatar

He might figure it out as a MWC HC. I don’t believe he is a P4 HC. His ceiling is a P4 DC or MWC HC.

He might look a bit better in the ACC, where he should be able to get to 6-6 or 7-5.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Shocking the world by upsetting fUCLA in the Rose Bowl and earning a bowl berth would be huge for momentum.

To your point, tho, this team should be 7-4.

sacman701's avatar

We should be 5-6. We've had four games that could have easily gone either way and we won two of them. We can argue that we should have beaten Auburn and SC, but ASU and Wazzu can say the same about us.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Nah, respectfully disagree. We pissed away Auburn and SC at home. We made the plays to beat both ASU and Wazzu….we won those games, whereas our mistakes cost us the other two.

Should’ve won all 4, or at least 3-1.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I agree.

The only real toss up to me was USC.

Auburn, we should have won comfortable by at least 10 points and at a minimum escaped with a last second FG win.

mrjpark's avatar

The difference is the refs straight up removed 7 points from us against Auburn so I don't think that game counts. We should be 6-5 going for our 7th win.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yep, we absolutely should be 7-4 right today. We should have beat USC and Auburn. Did you see Auburn lost 31-10 to New Mexico State!!!!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Ya. That Auburn team is bad. Just a dreadful loss.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Thanks Rick!

Nice win.

Mark's avatar

I’m glad that the last time we play Furd as members of the PAC-12, that we win on their turf and keep the axe. As much as I want Cal to win against UCLA next week, Garbers dismantled USC at the Coliseum. And Cal rarely wins at the Rose bowl post DeSean Jackson.

Mark's avatar

I will participate in this schadenfreude. Sinclair being ejected was deserved! We gave him the axe…. Or did he axe himself? I’m not sure how to use the axe in this context.

FromCtoShining(Blue)C's avatar

We axed him

BearlyThere's avatar

He put a quarter in his axx

Because he axed himself

KetamineCal's avatar

You're axing and we're answering.

Mark's avatar

I don’t know why Axe Body spray doesn’t sponsor for the Big Game every year. They’re missing out on an enormous opportunity to bring greater awareness to this just cause.

KetamineCal's avatar

Especially since Stanfurd stinks.

docsuess84's avatar

I’ve largely been a figurative grumpy ass old man with the uniforms and never wanted to see anything other than the 80s/90s dark navy jersey/gold pants/script Cal helmets, but I dig incorporating the Joe Roth helmets as part of the mix and match uniform options. They should go full Helmet Project and incorporate the block C’s, 78-81 gold helmet/center stripe/navy script Cal, and Joe Kapp bear claw ones too.

Bluehenbear's avatar

Next year is going to be weird

GoldenSD81's avatar

First Big Game in the ACC.

sacman701's avatar

The only repeat opponents from this year are Furd and Auburn.

GoldenBear88's avatar

Cal fans: I'm giving us an A+ for the win but only a B+ for our performance. We still have problems generating pressure on the opposing quarterback. In addition, I'm a bit worried that we don't have more depth at running back and Mendoza is still making rookie mistakes. We are going to have to play our best game of the season next week if we are going to make it to a bowl. However, I like our momentum heading into the final game of the season. GO BEARS!!!!!!

Bear19's avatar

Mendoza plays like a talented first year player who just started getting significant reps 4-5 weeks ago.

What I like most about him is that he doesn't seem to lose his confidence when he does make a mistake.

Justbear's avatar

I still can't understand how he threw INT when he had all day to throw without any pressure.

ShanghaiDave93's avatar

Give him time to develop reading defenses.

Heck, when I was 18, I didn’t have much vision as well

jakewebs's avatar

Low snap and a collison with the back to start the play probably threw off his rhythm. I guess only the team knows if it was a designed pass play or a broken play where he thought the receiver would cut the other way. Oh well, really only one mistake the whole game, very impressive for a freshman.

Rick Chen's avatar

Agreed. We can’t seem to go a game without a turnover 😭

HelloBowlesHall's avatar

We got more pressure than we’ve gotten most of the year, the only similar one was WSU. Personally I think this is more of an effect of poor opposing offensive lines, we’ll find out next week I think.

GERALD COLVIN's avatar

CAL IS GOING TO THE ROSE BOWL JUST TO BEAT UCLA NEXT WEE.K! SO I GUESS I'LL SETTLE FOR THAT EVEN THOUGH CAL LOST THRE LAST THREE TIMES THEY PLAYED IN THE ROSE BOWL ON NEW YEAR'S DAY. I REMEMBER BEING THERE AND LOVING THE EXPERIENCE! GERBEAR

GERALD COLVIN's avatar

CAL'S UNIFORMS WERE JUST THE WORST EVER. THAT WAS THE ONLY REASON FOR ME TO SUFFER DURING THIS GAME. IN SPITE OF THAT, I'M AS HAPPY AS CAN BE TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THE AXE!! NOW WE NEED TO BEAT UCLA TO GET A BOWL GAME. GO BEARS! GERBEAR

Toohandy's avatar

That's your opinion. Everybody I talked to during the game thought the uni's were great, especially the gold helmets.

napabear's avatar

LOVE the Gold helmets! I like the all-gold look, derided by some as the “banana suit.” Gold & Bold, that’s how I like it. White is the only other option. It’s the first time I remember seeing this combo, so now I’ll always associate it with this Big Game. Sweet!

napabear's avatar

Does this gold seem a bit paler than on previous iterations of Cal uniforms? A bit more yellow than gold?

OldSoCalBear's avatar

have we ever actually worn gold? I'm a bit colorblind but its been shades of yellow for 40 years

FiatSlug's avatar

I like the helmets. They're a throwback to the Mike White coached teams.
