I don't know what is the optimum number in this expansion era, but looking at the map, and identifying realistic, strong target schools with "assumed availability" and academic legitimacy, I would add Oregon St. and if possible San Diego St. I'd also add Rice and Tulane to accompany SMU. This would enclose SC and UCLA plus capture the San Diego market. Oregon St. would give some Northwest presence. That would make 22, but again, I don't know what number is optimal.
