Colorado lost their last 4 games by at least 38 points. They were one of the worst teams in the history of the Pac-12…and they beat us.

Question for WFC Community:

USC, Oregon, UW, Wazzu, and U of A ALL used the portal to bring in quality QBs and improved. Provided the OC/OL hires are competent upgrades, how confident are we that Cal has a QB on the roster that can legitimately help it take the next step?

I’m rooting for SC to make the CFB playoffs, we need that money to help with the Fox buyout.

Expand full comment

Based on my research, in year 4 the buyout is only about $1M, unless Knowlton secretly extended him with some guaranteed deal similar to the malpractice he committed with Justin Wilcox.

A couple of donors cover that Fox buyout easy, and I’m convinced that Fox will be gone at the end of this season. But there’s no interim HC in the wings…sad thing is Fox is gonna go 5-26 after that Seth Davis article where he mentioned how they finally have the right guys!! Hahahahaha.

Osu won and OSU lost and Osu lost.

Yep......Knowlton save your job call Troy Taylor. Open up three positions (asst head coach, OC or maybe head coach) but a move has to be made. We don't have any top recruits and we can mine through the portal. If we stay the same well get the same results as this year!

Oregon State wins 38-34.

Oregon State is trending up and Wilcox is trending down.

Jonathan Smith is a Beast.

He was as a player and QB for OSU and has continued as their HC.

It is actually a bit surprising as I thought he was a bit underwhelming as the OC for UW.

He deserves P12 COY.

Riley will get it, but let’s be real…he brought the Heisman trophy winner with him, and bought the Biletnikoff winner for $3M…SC’s payroll is higher than the A’s. Lanning lured an NFL Qb, as did DeBoer.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Smith is gonna win 10 with a backup f-ing QB, and coulda/shoulda beat SC AND UW.

Dan Lanning doesn’t appear to be working out up in Oregon, perhaps they should fire him and bring Wilcox home.

If OSU‘s comeback holds, they’ll be yelling for lanning’s head

Yep, this would be the second time Lanning has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Wilcox will be the hot commodity again

At this point, the football team may well wind up with more wins than the men's basketball team.

It could be a push…baffling

Justbear he's limited. LBs and DB'can cheat on their coverage bc hes not a threat. Kai can throw and run. Our line is not good enough to give him four to five seconds. No bowl with Plummer.

Now that we've lost this game, we can successfully call it a failure season.

Yes. Again…

Thinking outside the box here, but … what if the Big Game was moved up to, say, the second game of the year? That’s how Utah and BYU do it, for example. If we win that rivalry game early in the season, who knows? Maybe momentum could carry through and our won/ loss record might improve! (Though I’ll be honest, I really think the ‘Big Game’ is always when we play U$C!)

Expand full comment

I think the momentum shift, this season, was firing Musgraves and the "collective" being forced to be clever and innovative. And you're assuming we'd win the Big Game in a early match up. I am not so optimistic. Plus, from a fan base and storytelling point of view, having the Big Game early would be anti-climatic. Or premature Big Game-a-zation.

Can you imagine the Dodgers and Giants not being potential spoilers for each other?

Utah and BYU only did that when they ceased to be in the same conference. It was at the end of the year until the Utes left for the Pac, and BYU struck out on their own, in their long, winding path to the BIG XII.

Maybe we can play the Big Game in September when Stanford, Oregon, and Washington all move to Big 10 too.

I did enjoy my time at the games this year…as I do every year! Onward…Go Bears!

Tired of losing seasons. Why did it take so long to fire Musgrave? Why is mediocrity acceptable? Why is our play so inconsistent (coaching?)? Lot of heart in the players. Feels like we are close. But why can’t we recruit (local kid Luke Duncan would rather be #3 at UCLA than come here)?

I agree that the administration seems to be too comfortable with mediocrity!

I picture the administration sitting in rocking chairs on Carol Christ's lovely remodeled wraparound porch, sipping Arnold Palmers...

All the while lamenting the billion dollar industry that P5 college sports has become.

Hey Carol, it really is amazing how successful football and basketball programs lift the Olympic sports a helluva lot more than your complaints about the changing dynamic of revenue sports do.

We really need Troy T or even Tedford..:). At least we know OL wasnt the problem.. I'm leaning KM to take a look at qb. It's been six years Wilcox and not even a low level bowl. Fu##!

Expand full comment

We did get one low level bowl in 2019

What? OL definitely was the problem. When it had good protection, Plummer completed passes. When it was poor, everything was bad.

Watching Tedford and company right now vs Wyoming, and I know it’s not supposed to be the same talent level as the PAC 12, but boy are they moving up and down the field! (If Tedford comes back can he bring Bulldog QB Haener with him!)
