Pretty damn pleased with with win in a totally hostile environment with homer SEC refs making homer calls. First half Mendoza was amazing, a damn AI robot with all the answers through the air, but our bandaid O-Line really had some problems and Ott was not ready to play - he didn't have the confidence, the burst or the first step that he normally has. I'm impressed with how our depth receivers are playing. Both Nyziah Hunter and Mikey Matthews had some good plays. Then our defense showed up YUGE. I couldn't believe it when the announcer said we had one of the better D-Lines around. Our ILB's played great. Teddy Buchanan will play on Sundays. And our DB's were awesome!! 4 picks and one forced fumble recovered. The 'Takers' are back. I'll bet we lead the nation in turnovers after this week as well as turnover ration. It was a good solod win, even with frustrations, but we need some of our offensive big uglies back. If we want to beat the best teams on our schedule.
On paper, this, FSU, and Miami are the best teams on our schedule, NC State, Syracuse, and Wake Forest are up there. In fact, I do not see any easy wins, since it's Oski's curse to declare an opponent so.
Oregon State and SDSU might be trap games for us.
The ACC schools, however, might be re-evaluating us as one of their "wins."
Last year we lost cuz we couldn't kick a field goal, this year we made it close partially due to field goal kicking. That said our ST play ~ overall ~ was much improved. Give our punter the Heisman.
In these first first 2 games much of Wilcox's MO is intact. Slow start versus Davis. Poor OL play (regardless of injuries ~ snap the fucking ball). Incapable of taking advantage of opportunities against Auburn. Let's face it, this game shouldn't have been close in terms of points. Auburn had 57 plays to Cal's 70. TOP Cal: 35+ minutes to Auburn's 19+ minutes. We had 5 turnovers w/ +14 points but could/should have been more.
Critique done.
This defense has the "potential" to be very good but too early to call it great. That said, this may be a great defense. Mendoza played one of the best games ever by a QB in a hostile environment with absolutely zero support in the run game. But hey, the pass pro most of the game was damn good even with pressure. But then Mendoza made some really good decisions. LB play was as good as it gets at the college level. DL ran multiple stunts ~ perhaps more stunts in total than the last 5 years!! ST were awesome and our place kicker will bounce back. Our punter is phenomenal. DB you is back at Cal.
Still not sure about our OC and clearly he needs to spend more time with the OL development, but this was a good showing.
We had 3 starters out of the O line. That makes a huge difference in the way they play. Hell, we had the third string center playing and he is really an O tackle.
So, I have give credit the bears for playing an outstanding game. They looked do much better. Thru must have been looking past Davis Mendoza is the zQB, just like last year. He makes plays.
Whew!!! Amazing. Nothing easy. Looked like the refs had money on Auburn for a while. But man they just kept coming!! Huge win for the program. I’m not NOT saying the ACC is wide open…
The coaches made this a Mendoza game, and he executed it in a hostile environment, helping to keep the Bear defense off the field in the first half. The five turnovers enabled the Bears overcome the Tigers and the officials. Good for Cal, the 2nd of the first three games is a positive indication. Now let's see if we can "hold serve" in game number three.
I was a bit off as I predicted Cal 35-31 with a total team effort. It turned out that a total team effort was required. Ott probably shouldn't have played.
Absolutely no one in the United States wants Cal to win( including refs, league commissiones, people who control media rights etc…) except the diehards on this site!! Great day to be a CAL fan. Go Bears!!
It occurred to me this may be the week some Oski fan gives a higher rating than RememberTheCalamo.
I ran to the store to buy a huge ribeye to celebrate… nuff said… go bears!

(They fucking did it brother!)

Great win, Go Bears.
Now get healthy.

Given that, consider how well the punt snaps went. I was cringing in anticipation of a snap over the punter's head with less than a minute to go.
Really encouraged by the new WRs like Hunter and Brady. Wilson was awesome punting. But the MVP imo was Teddye Buchanan, dude was everywhere.
Woke up today sick and saw College Gameday have every host including Michael Phelps pick Auburn to win. Lol
They don't appreciate ex PAC 12 teams. They don't know shit.
*hands them each a crow sandwich

Reverend.
Who gets to ride up front on the flight home?
CLEMSON BETTER STAY HIDING!
That was truly fantastic and put me in a good mood for the first time in a while.
Jake Curtis, eat your heart out!

meh, refs called a fair game. there were questionable calls both ways. the P/I in the end zone on Cal was indeed crap, but overall it was a fair game.
Some calls went our way, but the targeting/pass interference led directly to their second score. But alls well that ends well.
The targeting call on Harris was BS also.
Agreed… a few swung our way too
And more importantly, our boys didn't give up after the bad PI call. So in that respect, I'm almost glad it happened. Almost.
Good. Don’t say it.
ACC is quite different, than before.

Cal could/should have hit the 34 mark...easily.
Except injuries in the RB room. Most important run of the day: Rodgers.
I thought he was a decoy at first.. then they kept trying to run him up the middle..

Nah, pretty much the entire Reddit game thread was rooting for us.
Vegas, too, did not want us to win.
Not even Acc people, so as to validate their decision? When playing SEC that is
Extra embarrassing if we’re the only conference win against the SEC this season.
Come on man, SC beat LSU...oh wait a minute.
But in a good way.
The Bear Way.
Beautiful! Hugh can console himself with a couple "professionals" tonight.
He did not look happy.
He always looks Gary-Busey-crazy, after our games.
I figure this loss warms up his seat.
Like losing to us was the last straw for CLay Helton at $C.
hehe
