I think some of the blame has to be on Tosh's enthusiastic buildup; i reaised expectations unrealistically given the clear lack of improvement in the OL and the bevy of inexperienced coaches he brought in.

MLocher's avatar

I'm generally an optimist (and accustomed to suffering, like any longtime Cal fan), but Tosh has me catastrophizing.

This team isn't merely poor. There's something fundamentally broken about this Bear squad - the coaching staff in particular - and it doesn't feel like something that's going to be overcome by JKS settling down or by a few tweaks to the playbook.

Somehow, Tosh recruited incredible talent and built them into a wildly dysfunctional football team. It's going to be a really, really tough year, and the transfer portal is going to be gutting.

LosAltosOski's avatar

You know, this loss didn't sting as much as the Clemson loss for me. Last loss completely reset my expectation. Today I saw a baby step of improvement in our run defense vs RB, and we ran new plays and players in offense.

But we also took a step backward in our entire defensive execution. And we continue to be out-coached by our opposing coaches in game planning and in-game coaching.

This is who we are this season. I just so wish the Bears can improve quicker.

Tosh - you working harder and burning the midnight oil is not getting to the results you want. What will you change next?

CalLax77's avatar

Something about the state of Nevada. This game had an eerie similarity to the Colin Kapernick debacle.

RightWayRiegels's avatar

Thanks. I’d buried that memory. Not enough that I had to watch today’s game and someone already brought up last year’s San Diego State game. You had to dredge the Wolfpack game up. You happy?

LosAltosOski's avatar

My memory is fuzzy. I just remember we got outplayed and outclassed by a clearly superior athlete. I don't remember that we were outcoached in that game.

In this game, it was depressing that even the announcers could see that we were outcoached.

CalLax77's avatar

What I meant was, a running quarterback destroyed our defense in both cases.

Beardown's avatar

Imagine watching the Furd lose by over 50 and somehow ending the day feeling worse than them. At least they knew they would be bad. We hype ourselves up every year and then suck. I mean 164 yards in penalties!! How?! It’s like we don’t even know how to play football.

This constant self destruction takes a special kind of program. We suck.

AndyPanda's avatar

Cal hired Tosh (and Rolo). And several assistants that had to be Googled. What did you expect? Better question, what were those expectations based on?

Daniel Lahl's avatar

RR has created a nice hype train targeting the alumni, but the product on the field remains the same - poor...

Beardown's avatar

If the hype and money is there then RR SHOULD GO (and Tosh for good measure.) No point keeping him around if the team will be the same even with more money and support.

Daniel Lahl's avatar

Cal is not a P4 team at this time, and the coaching is very poor - 15 penalties with two DQs for targeting shows bad coaching. As we go into conference play at 2-3, things are looking pretty bleak for the program. To win 3 more games now looks like a stretch. To be fair, the GBs looked good coming out in the 2H. But the penalties and DQs killed us.

Thomas Parry's avatar

Two truths that sre never ending: Cal fall short of expectations and will break your heart again and again.

BerkeleyBear's avatar

16 penalties for 164 yards!! Are those Cal records?

LosAltosOski's avatar

I love Tosh's fire and fail-forward attitude. I am extremely concerned that Cal cannot afford the time for him to become a great coach. We are squandering our resources right now, and the execution on the field is painful to watch. I don't know how patient Ron and other whale donors will feel about the results shown today. Run defense got better - just not against the running QB

RightWayRiegels's avatar

Not sure why you are so pessimistic. We’ll have reloaded on the $$ by 2030 and will dominate the revamped Mountain West. If you are a Sac State or UC Davis fan, watch out!!!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

This.

Time is against us and why the Somerville hire was inexcusable.

Krazy4Cal's avatar

Tosh has to have lost the locker room after this game. This team is broken.

AndyPanda's avatar

The team rallied from multiple TDs down (with the QB concussed) and took a 4th quarter lead, and only lost by 1 score, after still being in the game until the final seconds.

That didn't look like a lost team. It did look like an outcoached one. One that makes mistakes in part because making mistakes is what they are exposed to.

Juice's avatar

With all the targeting it really felt like the comeback effort was just the players pouring all their energy into avoiding a total embarrassment in spite of the coaching staff, not a willingness to run through a wall for them

Wing T's avatar

Let’s make a deal… can’t destroy what’s left of my hearing at home games when below .500

The Ghost of Joe Roth's avatar

I have not been this depressed about CAL football since 2001.

sacman701's avatar

Positives from this game: the team didn't quit when they were down 24-7 without JKS, pass rush showed some life, Brousseau looked ok. Negatives: OL struggled to block anything, secondary busted a bunch of times, we never put a spy on a run-first QB, loads and loads of stupid penalties, lots of dropped passes.

CalLax77's avatar

"we never put a spy on a run-first QB"

This...

LosAltosOski's avatar

Run defense (vs RB) got better.

Lapachet’75's avatar

And we don’t even have the Cal Band after this game. 😢

Bluehenbear's avatar

Disappointing. Keep cool everyone.

TezCalipoca's avatar

Like all sickos, I will see you next week.

Oski Disciple's avatar

I'll be at Memorial Stadium on Saturday as we take on....oh dear. Well, I'll be there just the same.

sacman701's avatar

V Tech. They'll probably beat us.

Ak_A_bear's avatar

I’m gonna pass on the presser…wait a day or two.

Juice's avatar

The presser is about to be the highlight of the week, I can’t wait to hear what kind of nonsensical “rah rah” bullshit tumbles out of Tosh’s mouth this time

BerkeleyBear's avatar

More of the same for Cal football. Given the $$, urgency, and stakes involved it will be interesting to see how the administration reacts if the season goes the way it's trending. Is it Tosh succeeds or if not, we're back in the Pac-12 in a couple years? Or is there an interim plan if, say, this season ends in 8-10 losses?

mrjpark's avatar

If we're not confident in running it in after the penalty, why even have a RB on the roster?

Krazy4Cal's avatar

Honestly at this point I'm most disappointed in RR not conducting an appropriate head coaching search and allowing a new head coach with no experience to also have 2 coordinators with no experience. Listen to how dumb that sounds. Doesn't even seem like it should be real, its unheard of is straight malpractice.

BrooklynBear's avatar

Ron Rivera should resign or take no salary from here on.

Cici's avatar

Was anyone from Haas/org turnaround even in the room? It’s insane

Wing T's avatar

Ron showing he doesn’t have experience as a GM. Wish he returned as coach

Juice's avatar

Literally not a single person involved with the program is good at their job and it couldn’t be more apparent

Oski Disciple's avatar

I think the equipment manager is doing a helluva job.

HaasBear's avatar

What was the point of going for it

Krazy4Cal's avatar

Coaching malpractice. That's twice this game I don't understand going for the two point.

Kai's avatar

Nice throw and catch there

Juice's avatar

I’m not a football coach, hell I didn’t even play. I do not think I could do a better job than these guys. But I’m also not entirely sure I would do all that much worse, and that’s just completely unacceptable.

Bluehenbear's avatar

3

Man rush. Gets a sack

HaasBear's avatar

Pretty impressed by Brousseau

Mark's avatar

Same. I would not be against splitting QB snaps between him and JKS.

Cici's avatar

If they roll out any more hype I will lose my mind.

Thomas Parry's avatar

16 penalties, 132 yards. Completely undisciplined. I don't know where this team goes from here.

Oski Disciple's avatar

If you're surprised by the way this season is going for the Bears, you're new to Cal football.

angelcarverblues's avatar

This is real Cal football. I'm unhappy but happy in a sick way. This is the mental dysfunction that is loving Cal.

Cici's avatar

Idk that I’ve ever watched a more poorly coached Cal team in all my years.

coyote32's avatar

16 penalties for 147 yards and ejections of half the starting secondary. The injuries are unfortunate but the penalties are a huge indictment on the coaching staff. I guess we didn’t get the next Curt Cignetti after all….

CalLax77's avatar

No UCLA did, pending the outcome of their game.

Beardown's avatar

Welp… at least Big Game will be close this year. This team sucks.

Frankie Xu's avatar

Should be a blow out W 👀😎

Bluehenbear's avatar

Not optimistic

HaasBear's avatar

Strong reminds me of the 6’6 guy at the gym who just throws up perimeter jumpers rather than working in the paint. All the skills, none of the desire.

Bluehenbear's avatar

This is approaching holmoe bad.

Juice's avatar

Can Ron just step in and coach at this point? I am not willing to give Tosh time, he’s not an actual football coach.

CalLax77's avatar

RR takes over as HC, Tosh to DC, and Rolovich as OC. That's the best plan to try to recover the season.

Bluehenbear's avatar

147 yds in penalties.

angelcarverblues's avatar

I'm actually happy to be back in Cal sicko mode. I don't care about anything but beating Stanfurd.

TezCalipoca's avatar

What choice do we old blue's have?

AndyPanda's avatar

Jump on the San Jose St bandwagon?

Bearoque's avatar

There’s no team like the Bears

HaasBear's avatar

Can I unbuckle my ass yet?

Cici's avatar

He is so ahead of his skis. Would e been nice to buckle down and execute

HaasBear's avatar

I miss rating the team each week. It would be a blood bath for Tosh this year.

Kindergarten for Coaches instead of rebuild as turnaround stacked with expertise at this.

CalPete's avatar

leave tosh and staff in vegas. clean house.

Cici's avatar

Emergency restructuring

Bluehenbear's avatar

We’re looking at 2-10. Terrible. I do not see any more wins on schedule. Not even furd.

HaasBear's avatar

If they do anything other than run Arnold on 3rd down its coaching malpractice.

Toohandy's avatar

I assume you're writing about Las Vegas. Arnold is their QB

coolingfan's avatar

1. It looks like it will be a blowout loss.

2. Cal then rallies and keeps it close enough to give you a false hope.

3. Cal loses anyways in a dumb or heart-breaking fashion.

Two decades of this for me.

coolingfan's avatar

4. Cal pads some stats/scores during garbage time to make it look like it was a close game but it's actually not.

Swimmie's avatar

So, you’re still new to this. You’re lucky.

Andrew's avatar

This team lost to North Texas 44-7 and we are losing

HaasBear's avatar

Where do you go from here if your Tosh? Like your talk hasn’t been remotely backed, this could get really ugly really really fast.

JeriAnn May's avatar

Post game presser will be interesting…

LosAltosOski's avatar

I don't want to hear from Tosh about relentless effort in spite of injury and ejection. We have systemic issues that are not being addressed because we have inexperienced coaches

Wing T's avatar

Does Tosh survive a two or three win season?

Lapachet’75's avatar

If he wins Big Game. If not, then it’s questionable.

RR should probably update his resume as well.

Cici's avatar

Yeah, he was never GM material in a turnaround. Chief Revenue, yes. But he green lit some egregious gambles. No oversight to reel them back from the cliff is insane

HaasBear's avatar

I don’t have a ton of confidence in Tosh or Ron but I have all the confidence in the world in Chancellor Lyons.

Old Bear 71's avatar

Of course. Dykes 1-11

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The record is irrelevant.

The penalties and lack of discipline is the bigger issue.

15 penalties today and they could have twice that with the extra curricular activities they have going on. They’re dirty.

mrjpark's avatar

Also, every 100 yards of penalties is effectively a free TD.

Frankie Xu's avatar

Only 1 - this is where we headed

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I’m simply disgusted by this team.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It’s one thing to struggle to execute or call bad plays, etc….a staple of the Wilcox era.

The penalties and a complete lack of discipline shown by this group is simply unacceptable and such a bad look.

Toohandy's avatar

At least Wilcox's teams won 6 or 7 games each year. We'll be lucky to win 3 this year. His defenses were much more disciplined than this group of NIL transfers we have now.
