CAL WINS THE MASOCHIST BOWL

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

That Gabbers is a good one

Rick Chen's avatar

Just announced at the game: Cal had 59 Olympians and 16 medals at the 2020 Olympic Games

Rick Chen's avatar

Cal student section chants "safety school" at USC during the media time out

GlueAndBold's avatar

Certainly was for me!

Justbear's avatar

They are cheering for USC?

Rick Chen's avatar

scoooop and score!! you love to see it

Rick Chen's avatar

Nice stop, Cal!

paulie's avatar

good thing they suck

Wiata78's avatar

Fun lip reading there

Rick Chen's avatar

No offense in the second half

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

This happens way too damned often in the Wilcox era, Rick. Way too often.

Rick Chen's avatar

You're right!!

KetamineCal's avatar

Buttfumbling in the proud SC tradition of Mark Sanchez.

Justbear's avatar

Man someone has a worse ST than Cal, and it's USC. wow

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

That kick was like Jason Mellon’s dive with his dad in attendance in Back to School....yuck

Rick Chen's avatar

Cal's last fumble returned for a TD was on Oct. 13, 2017, against Washington State (26-yard return)

GlueAndBold's avatar

I'll take an another one of those, no question!

Rick Chen's avatar

Inside linebacker Gerran Brown

Justbear's avatar

I see. I felt like there was a signature game from McClure vs WSU sometime back then

WilderThanGene's avatar

Devante Downs had a big WSU at some point too

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Was that the smoke bowl? Everything went right that night

Rick Chen's avatar

It was Friday the 13th ~ghost noises~

Rick Chen's avatar

Yes — AQI in Berkeley was almost 200

Rick Chen's avatar

brooks!! let's go bears!!

Daddy's avatar

Can we all just appreciate Dancy!

GoldenSD81's avatar

Fancy Dancy strikes again.

Rick Chen's avatar

Cal wins the toss and defers to second half

Daddy's avatar

I’m on Sling tv. Gotta delay your comments for 5 minutes otherwise you ruin it for our sling bros!

KetamineCal's avatar

We can call Musgrave's 3rd down approach the Oakland Offense because it's Too Short.

GoldenHairs's avatar

defense did good

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Saved by sc stupidity, where have I seen that before?

HelloBowlesHall's avatar

Offense has gotta do something here

Rugbear's avatar

Nice job Hearns!!

Rugbear's avatar

I would bet there are a lor of CAL fans watching the game on TV. Going to CAL for an 8:00 pm start, especially with kids, is a non-starter.

paulie's avatar

I'm in the Central time zone so I'm hurting having to stay up this late

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Wish Wilcox’s teams scored more TDs in the red zone.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I’m not just excited to finally beat SC. I’m excited to beat them in the Joe Roth uniforms. Cal always looks good when we beat SC but we looked excellent when doing so in these uniforms.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I do like the Joe Roth unis.

Rugbear's avatar

Those were the uni's when I played.

KetamineCal's avatar

I like winning with them even more.

Volvite Ursi!'s avatar

And at home! Bring this 18 year drought to an end

GoldenSD81's avatar

I forgot about that streak.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Fourth lucky special teams play

Justbear's avatar

I didn't know a long snapper plays on the return unit too

GoldenSD81's avatar

Good half of football by Cal, especially the defense. They did bend a bit but mostly kept everything in front of them and forced SC to settle for missed FGs and they scored a TD.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Having a tough time getting excited for this bc it is USC in name only.

GoldenSD81's avatar

We have lost to SC so much over the last two decades that I am excited to get this win. I don’t care how bad they are. This might be the last time we have a good chance of beating them for the next decade.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Didn’t say I couldn’t get excited....it’s just harder. To hammer both Furd & SC in the same year & still not bowl is the most Wilcox thing in the world! ;-)

TezCalipoca's avatar

Come on Jimmy C, take a blue pill if you need to. Get up for the game!

GoldenSD81's avatar

It really is the most Wilcox thing in the world. It will be an interesting answer to a trivia question.

I find it easy to get excited about because despite as bad as SC is, we could still very well lose this game and it would be so much more depressing to lose to this SC team than a normal SC loss.

Justbear's avatar

They did have some nice throws to #13, and those looked like typical USC play.

GlueAndBold's avatar

THAT'S THE GOOD SHIT

Rugbear's avatar

Brayden Rohme makes sure Brooks is across the line. I like that kind of physical play.

Rugbear's avatar

We took a bad penalty and gave them a first down on a long third and then we gambled instead of completing our assignment and we got burned. Seven points for the bad guys. Situational awareness is so key. If Hearns had let him catch that ball and tackled him right there then USC would still have been a yard short. Don't get me wrong, Hearns is a stud and a hell of a freshman, bit that's a tough learning moment.

Justbear's avatar

Wel those were both freshmen

paulie's avatar

I know I'm just being cranky but can Cal have a team that isn't constantly having learning moments

WilderThanGene's avatar

I'm hoping he bulks up a little bit and becomes a hard hitting defensive back, so we can really commit to the nickname

Wiata78's avatar

Special teams doing ok

TezCalipoca's avatar

Wilcox asking Dart if he is ok. good on him

FromCtoShining(Blue)C's avatar

You lost, U$C! Stop playing that stupid song!

KetamineCal's avatar

But it's the only one they know

KetamineCal's avatar

Also, they really like the Sac State head coach.

TezCalipoca's avatar

It's boring and its slow, we really wish you'd go!

Rugbear's avatar

As a former O-liner and o-line coach I will say our O-line is woefully poorly coached. It's unbelievable to me how they are missing assignments on Pass Protection, how they can't stay on blocks. All our issues, start and finish with shitty o-line play. If they play well we can run the ball effectively. If we run effectively then we can pass effectively. If we can do both we move the ball effectively, score points and keep the defense off the field so they can stay rested. When I see three o-linemen taking on on d-lineman in Pass Pro and a LB come free on a delayed blitz, I just shake my head. They don't even make those mistakes in Pop Warner. Angus needs to go.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Do you remember at the beginning of the season I said the two units that worried me the most was OL and LB. I never bought the Tattersall hype and knew the OL was in trouble when we lost Saffel and Williams.

Rugbear's avatar

I think Cindric is better than Saffel. And Coleman is definitely better than Gentle Williams. We have studs on our o-line. They are big and stong and fairly athletic, with the exception of Daltoso (but I still love that kid because he just balls out). Our problem is that our guys fundamentally don't know how to attack, engage and stay on blocks, whether in the run game or the pass game. There is so much I could say but I don't want to write 10 pages of stuff. Suffice it to say that their fundamentals are horrible, and you can't build something good without a solid foundation. It's not on them, its on the coaching. Our o-line wasn't as big, strong or athletic with Greatwood around, but they played a lot better back then.

Justbear's avatar

There was a Tattersall hype?

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yes, it was a thing.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

We really missed Kuony this year. The season changed in the 1H at Amon Carter when we saw him get carted to the locker room.

Rugbear's avatar

We found some good young guys though.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

True, and I hope he’s back next year. I wanna see him live in South Bend!

Rugbear's avatar

At this rate there has been no improvement this season. We need a new O-line coach.

paulie's avatar

that was easily the coolest thing to happen all weekend

Alex Khalifa's avatar

Is it baseball season yet?

GlueAndBold's avatar

Much better!

Justbear's avatar

This is interesting Tony Gonzalez and TEs conversation

HaasBear's avatar

Greatest TE of all time.

Justbear's avatar

and Scottie Pippen just stopped by lol

Rugbear's avatar

Game baby!! We beat Furd and USC in the same season....to bad we didn't play well against UCLA and we had Covid at AZ....we might be bowling.

Justbear's avatar

Could have won vs. Nevada and TCU too.

Rugbear's avatar

But close only counts with hand grenades and horse shoes.

Rugbear's avatar

So true. But then its fucking CAL. What else would it be?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

He’s done. They took his helmet.

TezCalipoca's avatar

That is an all time low in football broadcasting

Rick Chen's avatar

Announced attendance is 42,076 😂

HaasBear's avatar

Does that include us watching at home?

Justbear's avatar

Must be TV viewing lol

GoldenSD81's avatar

That has to be tickets sold and not actually butts in seats.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

What’s your estimate for the Cal/sc ratio?

Rick Chen's avatar

There are more USC band members than USC fans

TezCalipoca's avatar

Nice! thats like 3 USC home games

Justbear's avatar

This is the worst USC team I've ever seen. It's like they don't have a coach

GoldenSD81's avatar

And most of the established talent is injured or sitting out so they don’t get injured before going to the NFL.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Would Knowlton really extend Wilcox simply bc he beat the worst Stanford & SC teams in 50 years?

OldSoCalBear's avatar

I’d actually like to see a small, low buyout extension. Not just for recruiting, I want Wilcox to have the luxury of playing a younger QB, and not be in a must-win-now situation.

GoldenSD81's avatar

SC and Stanford are terrible this year. It seems generationally terrible for SC and Stanford is back to Buddy Teevens level of terrible.

But to answer your question, I believe he would and would use the Stanford and SC wins as justification.

Rick Chen's avatar

I continue to be surprised by the special teams tonight

GlueAndBold's avatar

I've watched half a drive and I'm already sick of Tribute to Troy

SadAndColdNortheastBear's avatar

Happy to at least end the season on a good note! As always, hope we can figure things out by next year.

Justbear's avatar

Recruiting, Coaching changes (if any) are the next fun things to come

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

And will Garbers be back....it would be a shame to waste an f-ing loaded D in an even-year schedule break by starting a QB that couldn’t even see action at U of A....

Justbear's avatar

But I think we know the ceiling with Garberes

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

True...but we also know the floor with QBs NOT named Chase Garbers...and if the D is ELITE, I’ll take my chances with Chase in year 11.

Justbear's avatar

Yeah, I don't know. We will have young WRs too. Maybe it's better to have Garbers. Or maybe it's better to get a new QB and WRs in together. Elite defense can bail out a young offense.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

We saw this downside with Deltha O’Neal & Justin Vedder...I hear what you’re saying, and Chase is what he is...BUT you’re supposing Cal can get competent QB play from a RS FR next year when nothing in the past 5 years (Modster, Brasch, Rowell, Glover) says that should be expected.....

sacman701's avatar

That was SC's lowest point total of the season. They had 16 against ASU and Notre Dame.

Rugbear's avatar

Season over way too early. See y'all in the Spring. Go Bears!!

Justbear's avatar

Cal wins the pretend-Pac12 championship game

GlueAndBold's avatar

We got out gained by 150 yards and still looked better than Oregon

sacman701's avatar

"Better than Oregon" this weekend is a pretty low bar.

Bowlbasaur's avatar

Hearns going thru a trial by fire but doing pretty well

GoldenSD81's avatar

Nice, that should do it.
