the worst end around in history has occured

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Today is the kind of swing game Wilcox needs to consistently be able to win to take the program to the next level. Last week was one too. Spread is 4โ€ฆletโ€™s see how they show up.

KetamineCal's avatar

We're keeping them within Couging distance.

HaasBear's avatar

That two point conversion is Musgrave in nutshell

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly. Cal's OL is a leading tackler for Wazzu today.

KetamineCal's avatar

The best defense is a bad offense.

TD_24's avatar

DANIEL SCOTT WITH THE INTERCEPTION

HaasBear's avatar

Heโ€™s bleeding and canโ€™t walk, weโ€™re down 3 scores, and heโ€™s still in the game. Coaching staff is just embarrassing itself right now.

WilderThanGene's avatar

I'm done with Wilcox, officially.

WilderThanGene's avatar

Fire Wilcox! It's official!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

What did I miss? Looks like he's got a raspberry on his knee?

IroniCALly's avatar

Out played. Out coached. Out recruited.

GlueAndBold's avatar

I love seeing runs straight into absolute nothing

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Especially when everyone in the stadium knows itโ€™s coming

HaasBear's avatar

This d-line just runs into the oline and stops.

HaasBear's avatar

This play calling is a nightmare. Why are we throwing short of the sticks on 3rd down if weโ€™re not going for it on 4th?

This is David Shaw-esq

Steve W's avatar

How does a team that fired its head coach last year and turn around and hand the HC job to a guy that no one had heard of end up being this much better than Cal? And all this happening after their most dynamic player - DeLaura - bolts the team. The level of mediocrity we saw from this Wilcox led team was just stunning today.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Offensive scheme has a lot to do with it, plus the NIL...Wazzu gave a car, an apartment & a chunk of money to Cam Ward, who brought his HC as now OC and #1 WR with him and plays in a pass happy system.

WilderThanGene's avatar

Well look at you with the real answers!

Archon79's avatar

This isnโ€™t all on Musgrave but next year they need an RPO offensive coordinator to maximize Milner and Ott.

Archon79's avatar

Weโ€™ve put a bunch of running backs in the NFL. If we canโ€™t keep Ott then we should resign ourselves to the Mountain West and I can officially stop caring about the program.

WilderThanGene's avatar

We barely got Ott to begin with. He was a de-commit / re-commit. Whenever I see him making a play I wonder why he isnt wearing a flashy Oregon uniform

GoldenSD81's avatar

Oh he will be soon enough. Maybe a USC uniform or UCLA or UW.

WilderThanGene's avatar

At this point, he might as well make it an Alabama uniform

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

You think Ott's gonna still be in Berkeley? Wow, good on ya with the positivity!!

GoldenSD81's avatar

Oh itโ€™s on Wilcox first, Musgrave second and Angus third.

We need a power spread offense or go air raid.

Steve W's avatar

Can we end this generally held belief that Cal has a good defense this year? You don't have a good defense if you can't generate a pass rush. This will likely be the second game in a row the defense gives up more than 400 yards in the passing game to two quarterbacks who are not even close to consideration as the best in the conference. Wait until Cal faces Penix, DTR and Nix.

Archon79's avatar

Still hard for me to say since the offense has been a tire fire outside the 2nd half against Arizona. You canโ€™t expect anything less then a great defense to hold up against this level of ineptitude on offense.

Wiata78's avatar

Donโ€™t forget, the rushing defense is also suspect.

Daddy's avatar

Wilcox needs to go full boise st and fire musgrave after this game.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He should but he wonโ€™t. At a minimum he should reassign Musgrave and give the play calling duties to someone else.

Califorrrnia!'s avatar

Cougs are what wilcox wants us to be and we aren't. they could have a 9-3 season easily

GoldenSD81's avatar

And they managed to do it in 2 seasons. Wilcox is in his 6th season and I just see a stagnant program that canโ€™t get its offense figured out.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Until he goes to some sort of spread, Wilcox will NEVER have a competent offense

KetamineCal's avatar

I blame Berkeley housing prices.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I blame the City of Berkeley

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Definitely cost them a bowl game last year, so thatโ€™s something

chuss's avatar

Theyโ€™ve surprised me. What a great defense with an explosive offense.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

On the tarmac. That's embarrassing.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Not happening today, tomorrow, next month or after the season.

KetamineCal's avatar

Crediting our OL with 2 tackles today.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Iโ€™m really happy that the players donโ€™t give up as quickly as I do

docsuess84's avatar

Iโ€™m here at the game in person. The gameplay is basically the live sporting event version of eating a stale cracker.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I will say although he's got limited opportunities, Jermaine Terry is by far the most disappointing player this year, at least so far.

I had high hopes for him.

Steve W's avatar

If Terry is the great athlete that everyone says he is, it's time to move him to another position. God knows the defense needs a better pass rush off the edge. He played D line in high school. Pretty clear that tight end is not his jam.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Agreed - heโ€™s got size, speed and athleticism. Heโ€™s been a non-factor on O - gotta make that play today

GoldenSD81's avatar

Him and really the entire TE room has been.

HaasBear's avatar

Heโ€™s gotta be better. That drop canโ€™t happen.

Califorrrnia!'s avatar

ball at the 2. time for musgrave to go shotgun

HaasBear's avatar

Leave a back and TE in to protect? Hell no, 5 wide and a 7 step drop!

Daddy's avatar

Came to say Arizona dline sucks.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

O line regressed to its previous state

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Musgrave play calling silly.

OC Bear's avatar

Plummer needs to audible out when he sees a DE unblocked and they are running that way.

coyote32's avatar

Nice bailout there for us on the pick. Secondary was getting shredded until that play.

TD_24's avatar

Dario Longhetto's 42 yard field goal is good 7-3 Wazzu

Bowlbasaur's avatar

The Musgrave criticism is misguided. Wilcox is responsible for the entire teamโ€ฆ 9 points, 5 sacks allowed is on him.

GoldenSD81's avatar

True but Wilcox just got extended for some reason and isnโ€™t getting fired. Our only hope is that Wilcox is able to find a competent OC on his 3rd try.

Steve W's avatar

He won't. And the problems are a lot deeper than the O coordinator. Cal's revamped offensive line looked pretty terrible today. The guy who was named the top offensive lineman in the conference last week was doing his best matador act in the series where Plummer got injured.

GoldenSD81's avatar

The OC and OL coach need to be replaced and I have no faith that Wilcox will make a good hire.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I would get Ott out of the game NOW

TezCalipoca's avatar

desperate for our D to make yet another big play

Bluehenbear's avatar

That was the last drive. This game is over

Old Bear 71's avatar

They have. Doesnโ€™t matter.

GlueAndBold's avatar

This is all part of the plan, right? Can't properly Coug it without a truly epic collapse

Bowlesman80's avatar

Yes, but I am getting worried...

GoldenHairs's avatar

They give us hope so it hurts more

Califorrrnia!'s avatar

musgrave brought out his secret weapon for the 4th quarter. the QB scramble

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Wazzu loses this game to EVERY P12 team but 2...Colorado and Cal.

HaasBear's avatar

The Arizonas are bad too

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Arizona can score...they win this.

ASU meh...but I'd give them the benefit.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Lot going on there for a gain of 4

TD_24's avatar

This play action to not throw it more than 5 yards is getting old quick

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Seriously.

I want to see Millner.

KetamineCal's avatar

Every time we want to see the backup we're reminded why they're the backup. At least since Tedford's been gone.

GoldenSD81's avatar

If he canโ€™t beat Plummer out he must be bad. All backup QBs in the Wilcox era have shown they arenโ€™t good and are the backups for a reason.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Oh agreed....I'm just tired of the Jack Plummer era. Seen enough.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I canโ€™t even blame the QBs. Itโ€™s the offensive system that is the problem. These QBs should be in spread offenses. We keep taking square pegs and pounding them into round holes and wonder why it doesnโ€™t work.

Bluehenbear's avatar

Time to give up another 3rd and long

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

THIS is the type of O you'd like to see Wilcox run...spread things out, get guys in space.

Bluehenbear's avatar

I hope our WR arenโ€™t watching

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

This is the Wilcox-era in a nutshell...a winnable, swing game, and THIS is what you get.

Career coordinator.

GoldenSD81's avatar

His ceiling is looking like DC or MWC HC.

HaasBear's avatar

Wellโ€ฆ if the next few months go the wrong wayโ€ฆ

Steve W's avatar

LOL. He is now a career head coach. The Cal AD made that happen.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Inexplicable extension

Bluehenbear's avatar

Our pass

Rush is garbage

KetamineCal's avatar

Ok now this looks like a drive.

KetamineCal's avatar

And now the penalty makes it look like a Cal drive.

KetamineCal's avatar

Finally used Ott with our back to the goal line!

GoldenHairs's avatar

Our only chance of scoring is on pick 6

Califorrrnia!'s avatar

yep, worth the risk there

OC Bear's avatar

terrible spot. Should be a touchback

KetamineCal's avatar

Do they automatically review all changes of possession?

TD_24's avatar

Woodson came out of the endzone

Califorrrnia!'s avatar

hope so but it seemed like he started to go forward by himself

GoldenHairs's avatar

I donโ€™t blame the D you can defend for so long

GoldenSD81's avatar

Thatโ€™s true but coming out of halftime that is a bad look. They just got a decent rest between our last series of the first half and the halftime.

HaasBear's avatar

Damn. Good coverage by Scott but sometimes you get got.

HaasBear's avatar

How much money do we have to donate to get a new commercial? Itโ€™s embarrassing at this point.

KetamineCal's avatar

Let's crowdfund an ad about how much Larry Scott sucked as commissioner.

Califorrrnia!'s avatar

and all they do is switch out the football coach scene every 5 years

TezCalipoca's avatar

I have an idea for a new one, but with a call back to the 60s, which many folks associate with Cal anyway. Cat Stevens- If You Want to Sing Out. Very easy to visualize some good scenes with the song, and a parthat goes U C.

calpaladin's avatar

Can we afford the royalties to Cat Stevens?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It's such a dogschitt ad!! Aaargh

calpaladin's avatar

Yeah, it's to the point I miss the black-&-white old-timey commercial with a bear walking around.

docsuess84's avatar

The Joan Didion poem commercial did absolutely nothing for hyping the school but it was definitely unique.

CalPete's avatar

I don't miss Sonny but I miss Jared Goff.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Dykes and TCU would put up 40 on this WSU defense and hold them to about 20.

CalPete's avatar

Woulda coulda shoulda. He had more than enough rope at Cal and gave us Buh, had asst coaches get in trouble with the law, had a player die during conditioning. If we fired him after 2 years, I might wonder what he could've done with a fair chance.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Not nearly as much rope or support as offensively challenged Wilcox.

Wilcox has given us the offensive version of Buh in Musgrave.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Sonny at least played enjoyable football games, albeit frustrating defensively.

Even in the wins, Wilcox plays by and large unwatchably boring football. Every now and then you get a game like last week, but mostly it's schitt like UNLV.

It's a chore.

Califorrrnia!'s avatar

that means you miss Buh too

GoldenSD81's avatar

It is clear last week was just a product of playing a bad Arizona defense.

This offense is playing a good defense, not great but good and it is completely shutdown.

TD_24's avatar

Plummer animated in the huddle

calpaladin's avatar

Probably tired of getting hit over and over.

TD_24's avatar

3rd and 1 Jaydn Ott blown up and Cal is punting. Mavin Anderson dropped a completely catchable ball on the drive and looks to be dinged up

HaasBear's avatar

Is that their 4th and 5th sack in less than 2 quarters???
