happy 50th bday over the weekend to HeyAlumniGo

CALumbus Bear's avatar

HBD HAG!

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

at least it wasnt the first thing that was flagged as "inappropriate"

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!

g.oso's avatar

What? You didn't say anything this weekend, and I saw you Thursday and Saturday. HBD man

heyalumnigo's avatar

I guess I really don't care about celebrating my birthday

CALumbus Bear's avatar

...he said, while kicking a rock and wiping away a solitary tear.

g.oso's avatar

^^^ this comment is under the "1 reply" button every time I've loaded the dbd today. Every. Single. Time.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i guess i could have posted something on Fri ...

atoms's avatar

I know, WTF!? I saw him Saturday and he didn't mention it. Now I definitely gotta take you out to dinner, dude.

FiatSlug's avatar

Happy B'day, HAG! Entering one's sixth decade isn't so bad as having plowed ahead into one's seventh. 😯😯

heyalumnigo's avatar

Thanks Fiat. I'm still maybe single digits or definitely teens mentally so I'm good!

Scootie's avatar

Thank God the typos are coming with us!

AndyPanda's avatar

Thank God YOU came with us! (To keep things in perspective.)

Scootie's avatar

Sadly this is blocked from my work computer so I will only be here very occasionally. 😭

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Interesting. I wonder what policy is preventing this li'l ol' site from getting through.

I've found the site works pretty well on mobile, however.

Scootie's avatar

We seem to have opt-in more than opt out. If a site doesn’t fit one of many categories, or they don’t know how to categorize it, it ends up blocked. It’s super frustrating.

AndBears's avatar

Same for me. We might work in just more a security focused arena

O.Overall's avatar

This site is blocked for me, though the old one was too after about 2013. I have done this on my phone the entire time since, is fine

AndyPanda's avatar

They can't have already detected Twist and blacklisted the domain, can they? I haven't seen FireStarkey or DC yet either, so it can't be because of them?

Terence's avatar

Twist hasn't logged in yet

DC Trojan's avatar

I’m having a hard time logging in on my phone but I think it might be working now?

DC Trojan's avatar

Reading threads on the phone is a challenge tho

zoonewsbears's avatar

our work has some inexplicables, best we can figure is certain IP ranges is blocked cuz a few within that ranges are [gambling, pr0n, ]

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Now I'm trying to imagine the business model behind a gambling pr0n site, and it gets pretty wild...

royrules22's avatar

did someone say pr0n at work!? Ah I miss the good ole of days where I did nothing at work..

g.oso's avatar

OK. Finally settled on a new name

SGBear's avatar

I went to the A's pre-season on Saturday. I gave and immediately received a half-dozen enthusiastic GO BEARS! So satisfying.

Piotr Le's avatar

I need that painting. I spent too much time in Evans and now I need this painting on a spiritual level.

j.lee's avatar

Heh. Yeah. Way too much time spent in Evans too.

Would be a good add to the decor of my game/sportyball cave.

Harsha's avatar

Good luck with the new site, y'all!

Erik Johannessen's avatar

So, we gonna hit 1k comments today, or what?

FedExpress's avatar

bought bleacher tickets to A's vs. Astros* on Monday, 3/30, to heckle the cheaters. GO!!

SGBear's avatar

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I vote to change Super Tuesday to Super Taco Tuesday

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I was really hoping that Super Tuesday would coincide with Fat Tuesday so we could get Super Fat Tuesday

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

We already have that every week!

Cugel's avatar

We had super tasty pork shoulder tacos with mole last night, and panna cotta with wine infused pears for desert.

royrules22's avatar

Oh shit I forgot to vote! I need to do it tonight and drop it off tomorrow

sycasey's avatar

Mayor Pete drops out.

Looks like it's pretty much Bernie vs. Biden the rest of the way.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Klobuchar too, to endorse Biden.

Obviously helps Biden, but probably helps Warren hit delegate thresholds, at least. Her path to the nomination is unlikely, at this point, but really, campaigns generally end when the candidate runs out of money, not viability.

mrjpark's avatar

Warren probably gets VP candidacy over anyone now. I don't see Sanders/Biden working together, and while it's a bit cold to say it like this...Warren has the woman factor going for her politically. Biden is super centrist, too, so having someone like Warren has his VP will help him connect with the more progressive Democrats.

GlueAndBold's avatar

Warren's a bit old for an already old Presidential nominee, and she doesn't come from a battleground state. She'd be a fantastic pick for Secretary of the Treasury but I'd much prefer someone like Julian Castro as a VP pick.

Though Bernie might have second thoughts on the optics of picking a Castro as his running mate...

AndyPanda's avatar

Pete & Klobs both dropping out now instead of Wednesday (after we see what might have happened tomorrow) tells me someone (the DNC?) wrote some big checks or made some other lofty promises in order to try to prop up Biden and try to bury Bernie & Mike B.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I don't think I need a DNC conspiracy theory to explain the drop outs. You can use self-interest just as well. You can look at polling and delegate math projections and decide, if your Presidential bid looks like it isn't catching fire, who do you want to win the nomination, and then act in a way that maximizes the likelihood of that happening. In this case, 15% thresholds to get _any_ delegates makes dropping out now and endorsing a favored alternative a high-leverage point that will be gone in a couple days, especially if you are unlikely to win many of those delegates yourself.

Cugel's avatar

Exactly, you look hella lame hanging around and not getting any delegates - if you believe you have any future in the party, it behooves you to drop out.

AndyPanda's avatar

Depends on whether you think you can come close to getting some delegates in some states. And on your tolerance for Biden.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Sure, my main point is that both Pete and Amy dropping out could be explained by rational self-interest without any DNC cabal pulling strings behind the scenes.

DC Trojan's avatar

Klobuchar only wanted to outlast Mayo Pete

O.Overall's avatar

Suicide pact like Rome and Juliet! Fitting

O.Overall's avatar

Or they just figured they had more to gain by pleasing party bosses and dropping out than by pressing on. They both have decades left in the party

Cugel's avatar

Hahaha "party bosses"

O.Overall's avatar

Also I was just reading a NYT op ed about how the race is now just Bernie v Biden, and a huge Bloomberg banner ad interrupted the middle of the article. Was hilarious

atoms's avatar

Elizabeth Warren is still there. Outpolling Biden in some California polls

sycasey's avatar

Doesn't seem like she has much of a path to a delegate lead though.

But I should be clear: if you like Elizabeth Warren the best, absolutely vote for her on Tuesday.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I think any potential path will be a lot more clear after tomorrow.

But if you can raise enough money to stay in the race to amass enough delegates to matter, you can have an influence on the party platform, and I can see Warren valuing that leverage more than some of the other candidates.

O.Overall's avatar

I sort of take find that line, oft repeated, a bit silly. I think ppl can vote for whomever they want for whatever reason they want. Also it seems presumptuous to assert that a particular candidate’s failings are the result of some complicated game theory going on in voters’ minds

AndyPanda's avatar

Which must scare the DNC tremendously.

O.Overall's avatar

I saw it stayed somewhere that if Pete runs for President in 2060, he will be younger then than Bernie is now. Mind blowing!

zoonewsbears's avatar

yes, we have a lifetime of pete ahead of us [sad.gif]

DC Trojan's avatar

That’s it, I’m self deporting

O.Overall's avatar

Dude, it’s all just a set up for a buddy comedy in which Pence tries to get Pete to sign up for conversion therapy and his ex-gf Amy K intercede and hilarity ensues

O.Overall's avatar

Bright side for me is no more Bernie/Bloomberg/Biden after this I think, unless of course one of the wins the presidency. Warren probably could run once more if Trump were re-elected

GlueAndBold's avatar

On this note, does the Democratic VP pick take on extra importance as the presumptive heir for a candidate potentially too old to run for a second term?

clapdoc's avatar

Filled out my ballot yesterday; there was only one vote that I cared about for a primary election. In Los Angeles County, there is a vote on whether to give a civilian oversight panel subpoena power over the LA County Sheriff. I thought it was so critical to vote yes that I actually tried to sway how my wife voted on that measure. (though I kept my politicking to under a minute.)

O.Overall's avatar

I filled my ballot out on Saturday morning and voted for Pete - oh well! I suspect my votes authorizing local bond measures are likely more impactful in any event

rocksanddirt's avatar

For the first time in forever, I got hit up by a door to door candidate for president volunteer. It was very exciting. Though she was, I think, trying to be an 'anyone but bernie or warren' rather than actually supporting the stated candidate.

dcblue's avatar

My building has a security code to get in but one of my neighbors is having some work done so the door was propped open Saturday afternoon. Two young guys knocked on my door and were stumping for Bloomberg. Said they had driven down from NY and Conn. They emphasized Bloomberg and didn't run down anyone else. I didn't talk long because I was busy watching the Olympic Trials marathon and do have priorities.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Will anyone be able to put up a DBD or does one of the "writers" have to set it up every morning?

Leland's avatar

Currently only the writers are able to put these up. We are well-aware and willing to do this daily if interest remains/the comment system is robust enough to support full DBDs.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I don't foresee the permissions model changing anytime soon, so we may end up "deputizing" a couple folks to do these. It would be cool to allow someone permissions to publish only discussion threads, however.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

:/

I am collecting feedback for Substack, will try and keep folks updated.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Is substack open-source? Could we help add new features?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I don't believe so, but I'd offer my part-time services to them if so.

g.oso's avatar

the new reply buttons keep popping up after I've clicked them multiple times to reveal the same "new" comment I've already read.

zoonewsbears's avatar

MAYBE EVERYTHIGN OLD IS NEW AGAIN [mindblown.gif]

heyalumnigo's avatar

Interesting, it looks like new threads show up at the beginning.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

yes, it's rather disorienting, don't you think?

Terence's avatar

It really is a daily bear dumb!

Nick Kranz's avatar

I suppose I (or any other writer) could fix it, but at this point may as well roll with it.

g.oso's avatar

How do I post gifs of bouncing boobs? asking for a friend

Kodiak's avatar

Depends on if it’s a hard(fake!) or soft G.

TheScientist019's avatar

Not the hard/soft analysis I expected in this thread.

TheScientist019's avatar

Just like Twist's surprise launch, some accidents are just horrifyingly appropriate.

AndyPanda's avatar

Twist and accidents seem to go hand in hand.

FedExpress's avatar

something something wedding night?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Right, that's even an actual story, not just a fun joke

KetamineCal's avatar

Couldn't resist jumping into the DBD for old times' sake.

ernan's avatar

for the longest time I thought DBD stood for "Don't be dumb". TIL it stands for Daily Bear Dumb. Nonetheless, the constant reminder to not be dumb was helpful

C98's avatar

Bear dump😂😂😂😂😂

Pierrezo's avatar

Yay! Thanks guys. Ready to make this my new home.

char1eylu's avatar

Got ma season tix GO BEARS!

imalasmax's avatar

If you close the page and come back, seems like you lose the info on which comments are new replies :(

royrules22's avatar

Also what's WFC's policy on Wikipedia links for things that definitely need one?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Why would we have a policy on this?

atoms's avatar

*someone* is evidently not familiar with the CGB front page phenomenon that is Gobears49

g.oso's avatar

Wait to ya get a load of DBD GB 49

royrules22's avatar

Tis a reference. A bad one but after I love to make awful jokes

royrules22's avatar

Is this the most comments a DBD has had in years?

atoms's avatar

No, not even close.

royrules22's avatar

Damn I've been missing out

atoms's avatar

Not really. It's been in the 100-300 range mostly of late. It did hit 500+ just this year though.

royrules22's avatar

Can Substack steal - I mean borrow - the `z` functionality?

mrjpark's avatar

In the great words of Steve Jobs, where he actually just quoted Picasso -- 'good artists copy; great artists steal'. We can forget his actions a decade later when Apple grew into a position of power and just accept the truth of the message.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Just learned about this, but it sounds like one of my friends from college really supports it, and you all might be interested: https://crowdfund.berkeley.edu/project/18822

Ten years ago a few dozen students came together to take back their food system from corporate interests; they ended up creating the nation's most radical grocery store. We are the Berkeley Student Food Collective: a student group working to provide more accessible, more sustainable, and healthier food to the Berkeley community — while learning how to run a democratic business in the process. We've run our nonprofit, volunteer-run collective across from Lower Sproul entirely by student volunteers for ten years; we want your help making our next decade even better.

We're requesting your support for our Decade 2 fundraising campaign to grow our student-developed work fighting food insecurity, supporting local farmers and vendors, and creating more experiential education opportunities. But your support goes beyond our individual programs and operation. It goes toward keeping an ever-larger part of the food system out of corporate hands and in the democratic commons. It goes toward ensuring that the community served by our grocery store remains in control of it. It helps us secure a food system for people — not profit.

This campaign is dedicated to growing capacity for our core programs. Your contribution will go directly toward: increasing the availability of local produce from farmers otherwise marginalized from the food system and organic growers at up to 50% off for EBT users; funding visionary student-designed programming educating peers about systemic issues in the food system; funding dignified food jobs for students; developing and funding new strategic initiatives; and core operating costs of running our nonprofit organization & storefront.

Steve's avatar

So - what is the actual abrieviation? W4C or WFC?

Rob Hwang's avatar

We’re hoping the community uses something and it all plays out. Haha

AngryBear's avatar

Super happy to be here. Really glad the content will continue, as always, love it all. You guys (maybe Rob) should look at potentially getting on the 12PAC podcast. Those guys are always looking to interview beat writers that can give their audience detail on each team. And it could spread the word about W4C.

Rob Hwang's avatar

Good looks. I’ll take a look tomorrow. Appreciate the tip.

CALumbus Bear's avatar

You should eat more fiber

imalasmax's avatar

For clarification, is this in addition to or replacing the old CGB/DBD? (Raptors gave me a short summary about this on Sat, but I've missed the whole story)

Erik Johannessen's avatar

we're abandoning the old CGB/DBD. anything posted on CGB going forward will most likely be intended to drive people over to WFC instead.

atoms's avatar

When do you think you guys will be able to get a press pass from the AD?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Already taken care of

royrules22's avatar

Wow look how fast things move when it's not Twist doing things!

heyalumnigo's avatar

Twist would've put the wrong name on the application.

atoms's avatar

That said, CGB will still exist and continue to put out new Cal-related content, and our usernames will still work over there... but at some point soon it will start to be run by a new group of people whom we don't know. Is that about right?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Basically. It's not going away, but we don't know what it's going to be like.

This may be a preview, however. https://www.bruinsnation.com/ucla-administration/2020/2/26/21153285/whats-bruin-uclas-search-for-a-new-ad-begins-in-earnest

You can see the BN commenters' reaction to this new change in the comments section.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Maybe it means they won't wield the banhammer as quickly. Time for everyone to create a new user (NotHeyAlumniGo) and start posting again on BN.

royrules22's avatar

I'm still banned on BN. I think it's because I told them a lonngg time ago that I was accepted into UCLA and decided to go to Cal instead lol

g.oso's avatar

what about people who got banned at CGB? will they be given amnesty at W4C?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

TBD? I'm not involved in moderation.

FiatSlug's avatar

In the spirit of magnanimity, why not? Doesn't mean that the mods would have to tolerate repeated stupidity and deliberately provocative behavior. Poking the Bear would be at one's own risk, as it were.

Scootie's avatar

Can we please not?

atoms's avatar

replacing! bye bye CGB, hello W4C!

zoonewsbears's avatar

wait if we're classified w4c now should we still itemize or ?

FedExpress's avatar

CALumbus Bear's avatar

What name will fiatlux use to pretend he's not really fiatlux?

FiatSlug's avatar

xultaif.

That was his screenname on BearInsider.

heyalumnigo's avatar

yeah I do remember that.

atoms's avatar

Why am I getting emails for every comment reply to me?!? Can we turn that off??

atoms's avatar

How about for you? Are you gonna have time to DBD now?

clapdoc's avatar

Here and there, hopefully.

atoms's avatar

It's going well! No major complaints at the moment.

Leland's avatar

We're going to complain to Substack about this. I'm also getting emails for replies to comments that I rec'd.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

We're going to _give constructive feedback_ to Substack, is what we're going to do.

Scootie's avatar

I was able to turn this off by unsubscribing to the newsletter in My Account.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Are you suggesting that Atoms rec'd his own comments, and that's why he's getting all these notifications?

atoms's avatar

I am definitely gonna start rec'ing my own comments now that you say that.

BandAlum's avatar

you better check yourself, before you rec yourself.

Can we get some more color on these pages? This ain't Utah

Erik Johannessen's avatar

White is a tertiary Cal color...

atoms's avatar

...is it, though?

GlueAndBold's avatar

Most people aren't a fan of the Stormtrooper look though

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Need a polling feature around here...

mrjpark's avatar

I'm pretty sure we already have someone with data on Cal colors.

GlueAndBold's avatar

How else will I express my desire to punch Twist?

GlueAndBold's avatar

Additional color feature- any chance we can switch the Like to a gold heart instead of a red one?

I assume this is already a top priority.

atoms's avatar

Take off that red heart! Take off that red heart!

Scootie's avatar

Wait are people changing their names?!?

GlueAndBold's avatar

I got tired of BearOnAMesa. Wasn't fun enough.

imalasmax's avatar

Might need to have a [NewName] (nee [OldName]) feature, to ease that transition

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

What if we avoid threading comments? No more replying to comments, you only post new comments, which show up at the top. FREE FORM DBD!!!

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I think the new comments showing up at the top will be fine once we get used to it, but how do you navigate to new threaded comments?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

Agree that a keyboard shortcut would be super-handy

heyalumnigo's avatar

Ctrl-F "new reply"?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Interesting. After refreshing the page now instead of "new reply" and "new replies" it shows "# replies"

Regarding the Princeton thing....My observation of many insulated folks is that they don't get Marshawn at all. They don't understand the man behind the hair and terse media interactions.

Terence's avatar

I read the editorial - they're not objecting to Marshawn specifically, but that they had not say in who the speaker was. However, as someone who was on the committee to choose MY grad year's speaker - adding more voices would not have helped the process. And people had plenty of opportunity to volunteer for the committee at the beginning of the year.

FedExpress's avatar

did Marshawn go back and finish his Cal degree? I couldn't find any info

g.oso's avatar

why does the comment order rearrange every time I open the dbd?

dcblue's avatar

Just had the same happen to me. Earlier I closed the window but didn't log out. Just opened W4C in a new window and the top comment was from seven hours ago. Went to my profile and back to the DBD and top comment was from eight hours ago.

g.oso's avatar

and is that "edit your profile" box going to pop up every time I comment?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

you should be able to "log in" and not have that...is that not the case?

g.oso's avatar

Not sure why my other comment posted above, but I am logged in

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

This is happening to me too! Also, this isn't password protected, so does that mean if someone goes to W4C and types in my email address, they'll be able to masquerade as me?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

you should be able to log in with either a password or an email link, so I don't *think* anyone should be able to masquerade as you without access to your email inbox

heyalumnigo's avatar

You can set a password from, I think, your profile page.

CALumbus Bear's avatar

That's correct -- and importantly, you need to set your first password after joining the site, and you need to do so by going into your account settings and affirmatively asking to set/change your password, otherwise Russian election influencers can set it themselves and you'll be effectively locked out of your own account.

FiatSlug's avatar

FiatSlug's avatar

Thanks, Kod. I'm feeling better already.

Slept in until after 11. Showered, shaved, dressed; Mrs Slug (I am sooooo lucky) made me breakfast, I made coffee ☕, and now I'm reading the DBD on W4C and life is better than it was at midnight.

FiatSlug's avatar

I see that this is reverse-threaded. Is that the default or will there be a different display option?

Erik Johannessen's avatar

It is a feature request I am planning on making to Substack

Leland's avatar

If you have other suggestions, please let us know. I've already been whining about needing read/unread and live-updating comments, so hopefully Substack can implement those for us.

heyalumnigo's avatar

After writing a comment being able to tab over to Post. Makes it much easier when doing everything with the keyboard.

heyalumnigo's avatar

It's like the olden days before the edit feature was added to CGB

heyalumnigo's avatar

I guess we really don't need Z support. Support for @ @

Leland's avatar

Read/unread is immensely important IMO. That's what makes it more of a community because it makes it easier to come back into topics/posts and continue conversations. I don't want to wade through a post when I can't remember if I've seen all the comments before.

atoms's avatar

I'm just assuming all replies are sarcastic unless otherwise indicated

zoonewsbears's avatar

HEY LEAVE US OUT OF THIS

Erik Johannessen's avatar

I believe the comments do a sort of live-update, or at least, if you hang out on the page, there should be a button that eventually appears prompting you to "load new comments". It is not as slick as SBN's, true, but I think it can do the job.

AndyPanda's avatar

The button appears to load new comments, but it is for each sub-thread, and you can quickly wind up with several of them. It would be nice to figure out a way to not have to hunt them down and open all of them. I can see this becoming time intensive to the point of discouraging use. The automatic posting with contrasting background to make it easy to spot new comments was much better. And if you do load new comments, its not apparent which ones are the new ones, esp. if there are a lot of them. Would be good to find a better optimization of how to handle this.

FiatSlug's avatar

We need an up button. I'm reading this on my Kindle right now and in a few instances, I'm unsure the comment to which another refers.

heyalumnigo's avatar
