This is a fine place to ask, I'm taking any and all feedback on the new platform.

I'm sure the comment box at the top makes sense because generally the platform wants to encourage you to comment on the article in question (which you've just finished reading when you get to the comment box) and not dump free-form in the middle of a thread. That's not what I'm saying at all, she has to win to be viable, if she did win, I don't see a problem with her candidacy, except for what she lacks as a politician. I think Bernie a win is an existential threat to the Democratic party.

Expand full comment
atoms's avatar

That's the thing though; you've never once questioned what Biden lacks as a politician even as you voted for him. It's a total double standard you're applying only to her, and I'd have expected you to be better than that.

I mean, Warren raised $29M last month, kneecaped a candidate who spent $650M on the race, and is in has lasted longer than anyone except a popular VP who has run for president 3 times and a guy who has been running for 5 years straight. She lasted longer than all her other Senate colleagues. I'd say that means she must be at least somewhat talented as a politician. Honestly, it'd feel more honest if you just said she rubs you the wrong way and you don't like her personality.

Expand full comment
Cugel's avatar

A) There's no reason for personal attacks, we've had a lot of IRL conversations about why I don't think she's a very good politician, do I need to go over them again?

"She lasted longer than all her other Senate colleagues. I'd say that means she must be at least somewhat talented as a politician."

She debates well, I'll give her that. She shares the lane with only one other person, Sanders, so the fact she's lasted longer, well that's a big part of that.

Expand full comment
atoms's avatar

Oh, it's absolutely not a personal attack, and wasn't intended as such, I just feel you're being inconsistent in not applying the same standard to all the candidates, in a way that I genuinely don't understand. Like... how is Joe Biden a very good politician? Seriously.

Otherwise I think he has an enthusiasm problem.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

It's an interesting parlor game thinking about the likely Biden cabinet if you take a Team of Rivals approach.

Having said that, I think indicating your VP nominee in advance of the convention is even risky. A very important reason why a VP isn't announced before the convention is not to turn off folks you're courting to support your candidacy. Besides, you're going to show your cards before you have to show? No, no. This won't do.

I would not under any circumstances name any cabinet member in advance of Election Day, though. Doing so gives the GOP too much ammunition to work with in the General Election phase and might serve to boost GOP turnout.

All these endorsements stink of DNC meddling

Expand full comment
mrjpark's avatar

Eh. I don't doubt it, but there's a real split right now in the Democratic party between the Clinton party and the Progressives. It's probably a healthy one, as the Democratic party wasn't truly progressive for a very long time now, and largely centrist. This would have been fine-ish if the Republican party had acted in kind, but they dug their line further right to differentiate themselves. Whether or not the DNC is meddling, I imagine most of those endorsements would have fallen to Biden anyway as they were all pretty centrist candidates already.

Bernie has a habit of calling out shit unnecessarily. Sure, it sucks that Biden got a huge boost on Super Tuesday as a result...but I think we all knew Biden was going to get a huge boost on Super Tuesday anyway since it has a lot of his strongest states.

People like to act like Bernie gets snubbed, but there's way more to it than just that. We had voter turnout increases, but the population that would vote for Bernie isn't coming out to vote. The "electability" part of him is actually bullshit IMHO, it's just that until college kids start actively voting it's going to be really hard for anyone that far left to ever get a nomination.

The dismantlement of our Democracy has never been due to the current state of the Republican party, or money in politics. Those are symptoms. The dismantlement of our Democracy happened when millions of 18-24 year old kids got complacent and stopped voting, letting 1 generation of Americans basically decide everything. Democracy works best when everybody votes because, while everyone may not be happy, the result is you end up somewhere in the middle.

whether or not they get paid back with an appointment from Biden, if either Pete or Amy a) thought they were very unlikely to win the nomination themselves, and b) strongly preferred Biden to Bernie, and c) realized that getting out before Super Tuesday gives Biden a much stronger change at hitting the 15% delegate threshold in states and racking up delegates, you can see how they might be motivated to drop out now even without a push from the DNC secret cabal.

I think most Duck fans understand they don't have the brand to go independent. It's just Canzano being the nutjob that he is.

It's not really duck delusion, more Canzano, whom most Oregon fans really despise.

DC Trojan's avatar

Yeah, I don't know what "national" support Canzano is talking about unless he's thinking that Oregon, Washington, and California are planning to declare independence. On the other hand, he's got a well established brand of being a pot-stirrer so this would be like catnip for him.

There is some semblance of history to this, where the Pacific Coast Conference broke up, and the AAWU was formed from some of the pieces, and some went independent for a while until the logistical problems led to regrouping and the beginning of the Pac-8. That exercise was about money and control (aren't ~98.9% of all issues about that?), and those that had more leverage forcing the beginning of movement into the at the time modern era.

This situation is rather different, but not really so much, and it takes the form of the largest brands (and USC & Oregon are, and there's no reasonable debate), and some of the most significant regional brands (and Washington and Cal are, and there's no reasonable debate) being the ones best in position to use disruption as the tool to move the needle, knowing all along that its just a temporary step.

I boil it down to the parties with both vested interests and at least some options prodding things along by saying "You all do realize we actually do need to do something here, don't you?"

Now foe the non snarky response: the point of equal revenue sharing was that a rising tide lifts all boats. It's turned out more like a series of boats at varying levels of rusting out stranded on the shore, as if Pac12 television revenues are the Aral Sea and the SEC and Big10 are Soviet era irrigation projects.

I'm doubtful that SC is really going to try and go independent because it would be more trouble than than the administration is willing to take on... although tbh the only teams that would be truly hurt by the Pac12 taking Rob's view above would be women's soccer and possibly track and field, nobody else has been relevant in ages and water polo isn't a Pac12 sport.

So I'm back to the view that Bohn is working to get leverage against Larry Scott, which is the right idea, because that guy has demonstrated that he's not fit for the job both strategically and tactically.

Erik Johannessen's avatar

AFAIK no school has figured out independence for any sport other than football, so you basically continue to need a conference affiliation as a place to park all of your other sports (otherwise scheduling is too hard). So, the Pac-12 has leverage there, as there really aren't attractive other conferences that could reasonably host USC or Oregon basketball, for example. Oregon in the WCC would look super-weird.

Expand full comment
NYCGOBEARS's avatar

For sure Canzano is trying to stir the pot and lobby against keeping Scott but the thought that Oregon even remotely has the leverage of an USC is ludicrous. I get that his angle is a local appeal but that doesn’t garner much respect outside of his local readership. God forbid that Nike money ever dries up.

Expand full comment
DC Trojan's avatar

To be an independent, you don't really need to be consistently good at football (just as well because Oregon has done a better job of that over the last 10 years than SC). What you need is a strong national level of disdain through hatred to guarantee that people will pay in the hopes of seeing you get beaten. Folks just don't take Oregon that seriously yet, SC has the social "capital" in spades.
