Jon Canzano thinks Oregon (like, apparently, USC) should explore independence. While I don’t think this is a serious discussion actually going anywhere, I do get whiffs of Big-12/Texas problems where more successful schools start to chafe at equal revenue sharing.
If anybody from the Pac-12 goes independent, jettison them from every schedule of every Cal sport immediately.
So, as of today, new comments aren't popping up for me anymore, and I can't tell what's new when I hit refresh either. This whole system is a mess and I hope it's going to be improved at some point soon.
The candidate I voted for stepped out the day I dropped off my ballot. Wish I could get it back. Meanwhile, let's vote out Larry Scott and get someone in who can increase the TV revenue and actually get a deal done with some of the cable/streaming networks that aren't Comcast.
question. how do i get that pop up box to stop popping up? what more does it want from me? I have a scrren name, a bio, a n email, and a password. do you need my ssn amd mothers maiden name too?
I don't actually get these pop-ups y'all are referring to. I just subscribed, created a profile/password, and it's not saying anything. I may unsubscribe, though. Ish is cray cray.
I can’t quite figure out why I keep having different experiences depending on browser and device. I think that one reason is that substack doesn’t seem to like VPNs.
Looks like we have the choice of an email for every article posted, or none. Would like to get one email per day with a one-liner or paragraph of articles posted that day. Sort of like nextdoor - @the standard by which all community discussion sites should be judged@
Nextdoor is like neighborhood watch, but online. It's just a bunch of bored stay at homes trying to figure out what's going on out in their neighborhoods, which are suspiciously getting more and more diverse.
I don’t use nextdoor so I have to satisfy myself judging people on the neighborhood listserv. It does provide occasional moments of pathos though, like the post about someone’s 80 year old English mother who took off with a small suitcase after repeatedly talking about wanting to to “go home.” :(
I got warned by Nextdoor mods because I told a lady where to stuff it when she complained about "certain adult looking kids" smoking. I mean it's not even thinly veiled racism...
Any chance this "post a comment" box can ALSO appear at the bottom or in the middle of the comment string where I might be motivated to post a comment?
Gotta say, as a creature of habit it will take me a while to get used to the W4C format over CGB.....
This is a fine place to ask, I'm taking any and all feedback on the new platform.
I'm sure the comment box at the top makes sense because generally the platform wants to encourage you to comment on the article in question (which you've just finished reading when you get to the comment box) and not dump free-form in the middle of a thread. You can always reply to something interesting, obviously.
What if there was a floating "back to top" button at the bottom of the window?
AndBears said that you're already aware of Coral for commenting (and since I thought it was "Chorus," you clearly know a lot more about this than I do)--is that something that could be used here?
I think it's less about the equal sharing and more about the fact that P12 leadership has been atrocious (#FireLarryScott!). While I agree that them going independent isn't the best route, I like the fact that they are using their leverage to do something. Perhaps it forces the Larry Scott holdouts at ASU, OSU, UCLA to rethink their positions. After all, successful programs leaving the conference hurts the conference.
When Phil Knight is writin' cheques, you can get away with all sorts of delusions. Totally agree about this having "Whiffs of Big-12/Texas problems".
In corporate culture, there's the phrase that "growth cures all ills", where, so long as there's money rolling in, everyone will play nicely. I'm thinking that a solid dose of growth would cure these ills for our conference. I agree with DCTrojan and NYCGoBears that Larry Scott is a key inhibitor of that growth, and must be removed, for the good of the conference. "Ceterum censeo Larry Scott esse delendam!!"
I never really tasted the difference between brauschweiger and liverwurst. Growing up, my dad used to buy Farmer John's versions - but instead of eating them sliced in circles, we'd cut one end off and use them as a spread on Triscuits. I kind of miss that.
This is wrong because you don’t have prosciutto first. And as a former Italy dweller myself, I realize this is heresy but I prefer French saucisson sec to any of the Italian salami. Vive la différence!
Funny, they are kind of the same thing. Mortadella is from the Bologna region. So the "Bologna" we buy here is an American take on Mortadella. (stupid fact, I know)
Not a whole lot of comments so far but everything seems in order. Yesterday I had comments showing up out of time order so it was really hard to follow. Hopefully on to good times.
I saw someone break down the actual survey question, and the top-line number of 38% or whatever was based on people who wouldn't buy Corona beer for ANY reason, presumably because they don't like the taste.
I saw something else saying that Corona sales are actually up YoY.
Has to damage brand value though just because of the new connotation the word corona picked up. It would be like having a brand called Isis prior to 2014 or so
It's possible you're right, but I have no idea how you'd measure it. It seems like the sort of thing that, if you surveyed people about it, they'd unintentionally lie to you and tell you it made no difference.
I thought the setting of Archer actually got funnier with the growing dual-relevance of ISIS. But my sense of humor is also a bit darker, and I guess I could understand why it some would want it changed.
I think that is right, but the value of trademarks is inherently kind of squishy. I think the damage here is probably not that long lasting -likely temporary to the extent there is any, unless this turns out to be like the Spanish Flu. In that case, hello Sombrero Beer!
A florida man returned from China, and felt sick - he did the right thing and went and got tested instead of trying to use OTC Flu Medicine . . . he tested negative, but got hit with a $3,270 bill for his test. This will surely be fine. https://twitter.com/nytopinion/status/1234065636873166849?s=20
I don't know how bad this is going to be, but given that the keys to containment currently seem to be enforced social isolation, rapid testing, and widespread access to treatment, the US is not well positioned to respond if the spread gets out of hand.
Hey, we got Pence in charge. How bad could it be? (to give one tiny bit of credit - Pence + Cuomo did get insurance companies to waive testing costs in New York state?)
I have not been excited for Biden at all, but his speeches lately seem more fiery, which is something I would have liked to see more of earlier. Perhaps he's done sleepwalking and will actually be working hard for this thing now.
I really worry he's gonna be Hillary/Kerry/Gore redux, only slightly senile to boot. Maybe Trump is terrible enough to carry him past the line, but then you could say that about anyone.
Also, maybe there's some parallel with Biden/Kerry seen as the "safe" choice against an incumbent Rep. Pres, but Trump is so, so much more unpopular than Bush.
Hell, you know I'd be fine with Warren if she wins, but she hasn't won ANYTHING yet.
I'd be fine with her if OTHER people voted for her is such a silly position to take. The folks in SC voted for Biden even though nobody else had voted for him and it shook up the race.
They are all their own special unique flavor of crappy politician, for sure. Gore had the personality of a cardboard box, Kerry was ridiculously patrician, Hillary was cagey and cautious to a fault, and Biden is a confused-seeming stentorian gaffe machine. All are long time establishment politicians whom the party elite are comfortable with but have no enthusiastic base of support and carry a lifetime of baggage for the right wing to attack.
I think Biden if he gets the nomination needs to say not just who the VP is but the whole cabinet - Kamala as DOJ head, Booker SoS, etc. Then brand it as Biden’s Super Team, making the message clear that we will replace the current goons with a competent, Respectable management team. Otherwise I think he has an enthusiasm problem.
It's an interesting parlor game thinking about the likely Biden cabinet if you take a Team of Rivals approach.
Having said that, I think indicating your VP nominee in advance of the convention is even risky. A very important reason why a VP isn't announced before the convention is not to turn off folks you're courting to support your candidacy. Besides, you're going to show your cards before you have to show? No, no. This won't do.
I would not under any circumstances name any cabinet member in advance of Election Day, though. Doing so gives the GOP too much ammunition to work with in the General Election phase and might serve to boost GOP turnout.
Not really sure how to read into this comment. I personally REALLY don't like Kamala, and don't think she's a plausible candidate for anything outside of state level stuff.
The polls seem to have turned heavily in Biden's favor after South Carolina plus the dropouts and endorsements. That doesn't mean he's winning every state, but the margins have turned a lot in his direction. The party's push may be working.
Of course, Biden could also blow it by campaigning poorly from here on out.
Eh. I don't doubt it, but there's a real split right now in the Democratic party between the Clinton party and the Progressives. It's probably a healthy one, as the Democratic party wasn't truly progressive for a very long time now, and largely centrist. This would have been fine-ish if the Republican party had acted in kind, but they dug their line further right to differentiate themselves. Whether or not the DNC is meddling, I imagine most of those endorsements would have fallen to Biden anyway as they were all pretty centrist candidates already.
Bernie has a habit of calling out shit unnecessarily. Sure, it sucks that Biden got a huge boost on Super Tuesday as a result...but I think we all knew Biden was going to get a huge boost on Super Tuesday anyway since it has a lot of his strongest states.
People like to act like Bernie gets snubbed, but there's way more to it than just that. We had voter turnout increases, but the population that would vote for Bernie isn't coming out to vote. The "electability" part of him is actually bullshit IMHO, it's just that until college kids start actively voting it's going to be really hard for anyone that far left to ever get a nomination.
The dismantlement of our Democracy has never been due to the current state of the Republican party, or money in politics. Those are symptoms. The dismantlement of our Democracy happened when millions of 18-24 year old kids got complacent and stopped voting, letting 1 generation of Americans basically decide everything. Democracy works best when everybody votes because, while everyone may not be happy, the result is you end up somewhere in the middle.
So says Bernie anyway! I think Pete and Amy figured best to jump out now and curry favor with Biden in exchange for a sweet post (Amy the VP?), than stay in, get embarrassed today, and watch Sanders take over the party. They are just trying to avoid what Cruz/Rubio/Kasich did in 16
whether or not they get paid back with an appointment from Biden, if either Pete or Amy a) thought they were very unlikely to win the nomination themselves, and b) strongly preferred Biden to Bernie, and c) realized that getting out before Super Tuesday gives Biden a much stronger change at hitting the 15% delegate threshold in states and racking up delegates, you can see how they might be motivated to drop out now even without a push from the DNC secret cabal.
Continuing my history of responsible voting, I’m proud to say I voted for ZooNews’s sister in law because he told me to on Facebook. Hope she’s not in prison!
What's funny is that I kind of new wife-of-zoonews when we were both at Cal - not in any way that she would remember, I think we were on two committees together - but didn't meet zoonews until CGB tailgates.
Yeah, I don't know what "national" support Canzano is talking about unless he's thinking that Oregon, Washington, and California are planning to declare independence. On the other hand, he's got a well established brand of being a pot-stirrer so this would be like catnip for him.
There is some semblance of history to this, where the Pacific Coast Conference broke up, and the AAWU was formed from some of the pieces, and some went independent for a while until the logistical problems led to regrouping and the beginning of the Pac-8. That exercise was about money and control (aren't ~98.9% of all issues about that?), and those that had more leverage forcing the beginning of movement into the at the time modern era.
This situation is rather different, but not really so much, and it takes the form of the largest brands (and USC & Oregon are, and there's no reasonable debate), and some of the most significant regional brands (and Washington and Cal are, and there's no reasonable debate) being the ones best in position to use disruption as the tool to move the needle, knowing all along that its just a temporary step.
I boil it down to the parties with both vested interests and at least some options prodding things along by saying "You all do realize we actually do need to do something here, don't you?"
Now foe the non snarky response: the point of equal revenue sharing was that a rising tide lifts all boats. It's turned out more like a series of boats at varying levels of rusting out stranded on the shore, as if Pac12 television revenues are the Aral Sea and the SEC and Big10 are Soviet era irrigation projects.
I'm doubtful that SC is really going to try and go independent because it would be more trouble than than the administration is willing to take on... although tbh the only teams that would be truly hurt by the Pac12 taking Rob's view above would be women's soccer and possibly track and field, nobody else has been relevant in ages and water polo isn't a Pac12 sport.
So I'm back to the view that Bohn is working to get leverage against Larry Scott, which is the right idea, because that guy has demonstrated that he's not fit for the job both strategically and tactically.
AFAIK no school has figured out independence for any sport other than football, so you basically continue to need a conference affiliation as a place to park all of your other sports (otherwise scheduling is too hard). So, the Pac-12 has leverage there, as there really aren't attractive other conferences that could reasonably host USC or Oregon basketball, for example. Oregon in the WCC would look super-weird.
For sure Canzano is trying to stir the pot and lobby against keeping Scott but the thought that Oregon even remotely has the leverage of an USC is ludicrous. I get that his angle is a local appeal but that doesn’t garner much respect outside of his local readership. God forbid that Nike money ever dries up.
To be an independent, you don't really need to be consistently good at football (just as well because Oregon has done a better job of that over the last 10 years than SC). What you need is a strong national level of disdain through hatred to guarantee that people will pay in the hopes of seeing you get beaten. Folks just don't take Oregon that seriously yet, SC has the social "capital" in spades.
“ What you need is a strong national level of disdain through hatred to guarantee that people will pay in the hopes of seeing you get beaten... “ damn is that not exactly $Cs niche.

'should have clarified when i asked for more asian representation in media that i did NOT mean "in the photo of every coronavirus article"'
I'm still waiting for Scott to reel in the $400 million private equity investment he started talking about last year. Doubt he can raise the money.
The candidate I voted for stepped out the day I dropped off my ballot. Wish I could get it back. Meanwhile, let's vote out Larry Scott and get someone in who can increase the TV revenue and actually get a deal done with some of the cable/streaming networks that aren't Comcast.
Let's make another comment
Boy, I've already created a profile, but don't want the newsletter, this gets annoying pretty quick
Haha
Time to do some live QA testing of comments, carry on...
Weather
Nashville is a mess. I'm glad No 2 was back for spring break, though the tornados, for the most part, were North of campus near downtown I think.
looks like it was North of downtown. So maybe 10 miles N of campus I guess.
question. how do i get that pop up box to stop popping up? what more does it want from me? I have a scrren name, a bio, a n email, and a password. do you need my ssn amd mothers maiden name too?
a pint of blood? a sperm sample? my 23 and me results?
the page refreshing for new comments is annoying af too.
not knowing where to look for new comments is confusing and time consuming
Agreed, you should have designed the site better. I blame Twist.
I blame eme too. I suck at web design.
Is it going to ask me to subscribe to the newsletter every time I come to the site? Because I am not here for the sports...
that create your profile box popping up every time I comment is annoying af
I don't actually get these pop-ups y'all are referring to. I just subscribed, created a profile/password, and it's not saying anything. I may unsubscribe, though. Ish is cray cray.
I can’t quite figure out why I keep having different experiences depending on browser and device. I think that one reason is that substack doesn’t seem to like VPNs.
If you go into your account and uncheck the email notifications you wont get anything, but you can stay subscribed to login to post in the comments.
I've done thst. still getting pop ups like im back in 1998 using AOL
Same
I think getting a digest form of the newsletter would be preferable for almost everyone.
consider yourself lucky my friend
I agree, but I'd rather uncheck that box than receive the newsletter (sorry)
o/
\o
you don't want to recieve a newsletter about how great i am?
I wouldn't mind. It'd be a quick read.
I wish we could embed tweets and pica and gifs... doesn;t feel the same as the old dbd
Looks like we have the choice of an email for every article posted, or none. Would like to get one email per day with a one-liner or paragraph of articles posted that day. Sort of like nextdoor - @the standard by which all community discussion sites should be judged@
Never ever read those nextdoor emails, just abandon it now.
Just follow best of nextdoor on Twitter and you good.
CGB, and now W4C, is the extent of my online interactions with others. I've heard nextdoor tends to get xenophobic, even racist at times.
It does provide occasional moments of pathos though, like the post about someone’s 80 year old English mother who took off with a small suitcase after repeatedly talking about wanting to to “go home.” :(
They did find her though
My grandmother did the same thing in Fairfax, wandering Braddock Rd.
Yikes
“At times” 😂
I got warned by Nextdoor mods because I told a lady where to stuff it when she complained about "certain adult looking kids" smoking. I mean it's not even thinly veiled racism...
like the db fb page where all the wypipo complain that there'll never be a trader joe's in dbar 'cause "demographics"..."there's too many asians."

I know this is the wrong place to ask, but.......
Any chance this "post a comment" box can ALSO appear at the bottom or in the middle of the comment string where I might be motivated to post a comment?

You can always reply to something interesting, obviously.
What if there was a floating "back to top" button at the bottom of the window?
This may be an unpopular opinion but I’m actually finding this layout (white, clean) much easier to read on my phone than the old DBD on mobile
You're just saying that because you're in bed with management :-P
@im completely impartial@
I never found SBN particularly usable on mobile, so this site is actually a big upgrade in that regard.
i did like the next comment button though.
Is there a dark mode?
And is there a way to highlight new comments?
not yet
Have you given rags/EJ a promotion?
After 13+ years, he deserves it.
“Is there a dark mode”
That will be the politics section
seriously, if the orange gets elected again...shit's gonna be bleak...
Prepare your anus
"Back to Top" button would be nice, especially since we have to scroll down to find and click on new replies in a thread
AndBears said that you're already aware of Coral for commenting (and since I thought it was "Chorus," you clearly know a lot more about this than I do)--is that something that could be used here?
Hey, don’t share our pillow talk in public!

No.
Dammit I keep trying to Z
I want to rec this, but I don't want to open myself up to 47 emails about replies...
I just unsubscribed to emails for now. It's easy enough to just check in.
I'm unsubscribed too—it doesn't work.

Rank 'em (Old World deli meats): olive loaf, liverwurst, bologna, braunschweiger, mortadella
I never really tasted the difference between brauschweiger and liverwurst. Growing up, my dad used to buy Farmer John's versions - but instead of eating them sliced in circles, we'd cut one end off and use them as a spread on Triscuits. I kind of miss that.
Pastrami or GTFO
Liverwurst, bologna, and 3 meats I've never tried.
capicola, speck, soppressata, proscuitto, finocchiona! But Jamon Iberico from Spain might be the best of them all. (lived in Italy, so I'm biased)
This is wrong because you don’t have prosciutto first. And as a former Italy dweller myself, I realize this is heresy but I prefer French saucisson sec to any of the Italian salami. Vive la différence!
I'd put either prosciutto first or coppa, I love soppressata, but has every one forgotten the pepperoni?
This thread is leading me to conclude that I really should do some orderly testing
set up a SWOT chart, and a decision cascade!
Mortadella is the king of meats.
I loved the Togo's #16. I believe that's the only time I've had Mortadella.
what about basic meats?
Mortadella, Bologna, never had the other 3
Funny, they are kind of the same thing. Mortadella is from the Bologna region. So the "Bologna" we buy here is an American take on Mortadella. (stupid fact, I know)
Mortadella kind of seems like Bologna with bits of fat and pistachos in it. Not sure if it actually is fat but it kinda looks like it.
Oh, it’s fat!
that's why it's better than bologna
Same except I’ve eaten liverwurst and it’s not good
Yeah I'm not eating anything with the word liver in it.
Liver is tasty
along with fava beans and a nice chianti?
along with onions and a dark stout more like
H E A D C H E E S E !
Huh... I’m used to DBD topics not being so thought provoking. This is a little too deep for me to handle this early in the morning.
Well, THIS is W4C, not CGB.......so get used to a more cerebral community!!!!! : )
What if I prefer the dumbed down CGB where I can be a king amngst dorkS?

Talking 'Bout Corona Virus
Well, shit. They just announced that someone tested positive in my area.
I still think it's hilarious that people won't drink Corona beer because of the virus.
Scientists missed a golden opportunity here, instead of Novel Corona, they could have named it after the champion of Mexican Beer: Modelo Especial.
I saw someone break down the actual survey question, and the top-line number of 38% or whatever was based on people who wouldn't buy Corona beer for ANY reason, presumably because they don't like the taste.

Has to damage brand value though just because of the new connotation the word corona picked up. It would be like having a brand called Isis prior to 2014 or so
Remember "Ayds" appetite suppressant?
we had barking dog next door named "Isis" (Egyptian goddess of barking) - had to talk beg plead yell at Isis thru the fence for a few years there
There was a band called ISIS prior to 2014 and they were fucking awesome
You mean like on "Archer"?

Us as well, no hate, but no excitement either
He's been my choice since Booker dropped out. I love Uncle Joe as a person and I believe he'll surround himself with good people if he is president.

I think he will go with someone who has a national job. He’s so old I think it’s important to have someone game ready
She might be ok, but having only been a state legislator she's a less plausible president than, say, Kamala Harris.
Not really sure how to read into this comment. I personally REALLY don't like Kamala, and don't think she's a plausible candidate for anything outside of state level stuff.
Abrams has said she has no interest.
As much as the Dems despise Trump, I don't think "enthusiasm" will be an issue, really.

All these endorsements stink of DNC meddling
Has there ever been a time in history when 18-24 year olds consistently voted in large numbers?
Well certainly not when you had to be 21 to vote
What are you, a Russian bot?

Or people who are looking at state level polling for down ballot races 🤷🏼♂️
^^this^^
I wonder what the DNC promised to those who endorsed Biden? Cabinet positins and a bag of cash is my guess
The DNC can't promise cabinet positions. And if they could, would you trust them to deliver on that promise?
then lets fgo with bags of cash
You are a Russian bot!
He is pretty embarrassing at times. I wish our choices weren’t two super old dudes, but oh well, either is a vast improvement over Trump

Continuing my history of responsible voting, I’m proud to say I voted for ZooNews’s sister in law because he told me to on Facebook. Hope she’s not in prison!
What's funny is that I kind of new wife-of-zoonews when we were both at Cal - not in any way that she would remember, I think we were on two committees together - but didn't meet zoonews until CGB tailgates.
yayayayay go bear judges
is she only running in a SF race? Or can I also vote for her?
She’s running for judge in SF.
zoonews sister-in-law YES! TwistNHook NO!
Can confirm she’s legit
i hate how these judicial positions are up for election yet there's so little info about them is provided. they're just a name on a ballot.
turns out they aren't allowed to say much anyways so look for credentials, news stories, and endorsements ... and hope for the best
Zoonews said she’s ok. What more do you need?
That’s way more than I know about the judges in my district. Im gonna just write in zoonews sister to mess with a poll worker
oh I totally forgot today is Tuesday.
Taco Tuesday!!!

Matt Bradley - Pac-12 Player of the Wee khttps://writeforcalifornia.com/p/matt-bradley-selected-as-pac-12-player
I’m all for getting rid of Larry Scott but the premise is ridiculous. Duck delusion is deep.
I think most Duck fans understand they don't have the brand to go independent. It's just Canzano being the nutjob that he is.
It's not really duck delusion, more Canzano, whom most Oregon fans really despise.
There was a time when UCLA would have tried the same for basketball but who knows what they are up to these days
Well.... bye then.
Sorry, not sure if I'm misunderstanding you. But doesn't the PAC-12 dominate water polo?
Water polo is MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)
