Got back from Taiwan and Japan for 2 weeks. All the kids went with me to Taiwan (sister's family and mom already had spent 2 weeks in Japan and 1 week in Taiwan before we got there) on the 28th. We stayed for a week, then No 2 and 3 few back with my mom since they had school starting up the Mon after NY and I went to Japan with No 1 and his GF.

How did that go you ask? Well apparently Taiwan has a huge flu problem which I think I got and basically slept for 2 straight days in Kyoto. We started in Osaka for a couple of days so I took some advil and went to go see the Noda Buddhist temple (when I thought it was just a cold). Then we went to Kyoto and I basically slept for 2 days. It hit no 1 the first night in Kyoto and basically he was in bed for about 5 straight days (was able to be OK to take the bullet train to Tokyo after 2 days). Basically it took almost a whole week for him to finally be able to be able to be out for more than a couple of hours.

The boys got me an afternoon in an R-33 GT-R. There were issues since No 1 made the reservation but couldn't go and the rental place required him to be there. So his GF worked with them and via phone and email, they "cancelled" his reservation, let me make one, and fully credited him the amount. Usually within 2 days you don't get anything back. It was fun driving there, although weird being on the other side. I got used to it faster than I Thought. In the things I had to sign, there were waivers that insurance wouldn't be honored if "Initial-D driving".

So what sucked is that we didn't eat our way through Japan. We did have the Osaka sushi special which is Mackeral nigiri wrapped in persimmon leaves. And I did have good Ramen in Tokyo. Other than that, it was bananas, apples, rice.

So I basically didn't log into WFC. Anything I missed?

Oh that sucks you guys were sick for most of the time in Japan but glad you had some fun.

I think DBD had very few comments the first two weeks of 2024.

Sorry you had such a crappy time on your trip!

It’s that time of year for respiratory diseases.

Seems like every other day I’m finding out about someone else I know who has had covid lately. Fortunately no one I’m in regular contact with.

How cold was it in KC? Cold enough that Mahomes helmet came apart when tackled. I've never seen this that bad - even worse than Lucas Gingold's helmet.

Chicago Bulls enshrine their former GM - the late Jerry Krause - into the Bull's Ring of Honor ceremony at halftime. They even announced that he was being represented by his widow and they fucking boo'd him, leaving her in tears. Have we no shame?

The Warriors broadcast showed the entire ceremony. Interesting that they did that, but I suppose because Steve Kerr was honored as part of the 72 win team. I would've paid anything to see both MJ and Pippen there and having to interact since MJ's son is dating/married to Pippen's ex.

Yeah, not a proud moment for Bulls fans. Deafening silence would have been far better to express displeasure or disappointment with the selection.

Welp, I guess some group of sports fans would eventually rival Philadelphia fans for being a "tough crowd".

39 games into the season, the Pistons are tanking and getting ready for next season by trading with the Wizards. That's a bit like Goodwill trading with the Salvation Army.

In a scenario drawn up by every kid across America: two great teams. You're down by 2 and get the ball back with almost no time left and no timeouts in OT. You get the ball. 3... 2... [shoot from deep] ... except unlike you, Dame doesn't need five tries to get the ending he wants.

The Out-Laws (Netflix, WNB, 3/19)

JFC this was bad. Adam Devine plays his standard dumb/charming/goofy weird self and I'm fine with that. It had a good cast of supporting actors like Pierce Brosnan, Ellin Barkin (69 years old and was almost unrecognizable given how much facial work she's had done), Richard Kind, Julie Hagerty, and Michael Rooker. But nothing can save a comedy if the script is bad. Jokes were like 2 out of 10. Save yourself the time by just watching the trailer, which is essentially the whole movie. The reeks of Adam Sandler having a quota for producing a certain number of films on Netflix.

Yesterday Mrs. OD and I saw All of Us Strangers. In an excellent year for films, this is one of the best. As one critic wrote: "Elegant and startling and ambitiously spiritual..." Andrew Scott's performance is transcendent.

I've been binging on Lucas Sin videos on Youtube. The dude is a Yale alumnus, but couldn't ignore his passion for cooking. He is one of the few to bring Cantonese cooking and adapt it to American households. You can feel his passion and intelligence as he spits out dense knowledge, taking the time to explain why it is important. His videos on HK-style butchery in the US was fantastic,

Fisch to UW feels a lot like Snyder to ASU back in '92. Only, it's not happening to Cal.

Ah, well. Maybe Arizona will want to take a run at run at Wilcox. Problem with that scenario is that Knowlton is still the AD and the administration's attitude re: football is still the same: it is to be tolerated.

Hypothetical: If Cal were running the Musgrave instead of the Dykes/Spavital offense at the time, would Goff still have come to Cal? Probably would not have been in his best interests...

Well it was Dykes/Franklin at the time, but when Goff committed to Cal our OC was Coach M, so he probably would have been fine with Musgrave.

Go Bears!!!

In the middle of my long run yesterday I saw a guy out walking wearing a Cal hoodie. I give him a Go Bears. He smiled and said thank you. Not exactly the response I expected but I’ll take it.

Alrighty, then. I suppose he at least gave an acknowledgement of your "Go Bears!", which is nice.

When i wear my ballcap with the Fiat Slug logo, I am not greeted with Fiat Slug! Or even UCSC! as awkward as that may be. Instead, I usually get conversation openers in settings like elevator lobbies. "Is that a slug?" "Is that UC Santa Cruz?" "What is that?"

This is not a complaint. It is merely an observation that there is a massive difference in responses to the two brands.
