This week I got tickets to one of the 4 tapings of the last season of Whose Line is it Anyways tomorrow night. No 3 was going to but he has too much work. My mom is coming down to LA with me since my sister is having a Lunar New Year party tonight. Anyone that wants to go to the taping I've got an extra ticket.

Aluminum

Sometime in the 90s I read about a suspected link between aluminum and alzheimer's. I stopped using aluminum pots and stopped using all underarm deodorant and have never gone back.

Or aluminium, if you want to mispronounce it per yesterday's DBD topic

Expand full comment

it's not mispronouncing if you're following the spelling*. I always wondered why there was the discrepancy between aluminium or aluminum when you don't see something similar with say chromium.

*A risky proposition to make with a lot of spelling in English variants, to be sure

I hear the British pronunciation as "AL-oo-min-yum". The first time I heard it, I was taken aback by the sound. It's somewhat akin to the British pronunciation of "schedule", which sounds like "SHED-yoo-ul".

Another Brit pronunciation that is rather different - "jaguar" as "JAG-yoo-arr". I first noticed that pronunciation in an ad for Jaguar cars.

Expand full comment

Aluminium is pronounced AL-oo-min-i-um. The second i is its own full syllable.

Expand full comment

Yeah, first time I heard aluminum pronounced like that was from my friend at Cal who is originally from South Africa. I was also taken aback by it.

Expand full comment

I don't think that's "wrong"; just British.

I had a British Materials Science prof that pronounced it that way. I didn't really know any Brits before then so I didn't know it was pronounced that way.

correct me if i am wrong ..

i was under the impression that the AL content of regular aluminum foil has such little AL that it actually cant be recycled. the heavy duty stuff on the other hand is mostly AL.

Expand full comment

I doubt that is true. Advice on recycling aluminum foil is that you ball up several pieces together. Balls of foil are easier to pick out of the waste stream since aluminum is not attracted to magnets.

I don't think that's true. All aluminum foil is over 90% aluminum with the balance being iron and silicon for strength so it isn't so brittle. The difference between heavy duty aluminum foil and regular is the quality of the rollers. Inferior rollers can't roll it very thin, so its products are marketed as heavy duty.

I enjoyed the first two. 3 and 4 dragged a bit and weren’t as good. I wonder if the prequel will be any good.

Hunger Games was much better than the Divergent series.

Maze Runner had potential but it just got too complicated.

YA stuff just falls apart the further a series continues.

Expand full comment

I think the challenge for some of these authors is that they have one book that's a hit and then the pressure is on to deliver, and they aren't really ready. The Hunger Games series had a slight drop from the first to the second book, and then a bigger drop to the third (amplified by the 3rd & 4th films), whereas the Divergent series was "decent" to "okay" to "ah okay we've just given up on anything other than the Christ metaphor," but with a lot of frottage as the unifying theme between the three.

You call it a game of chicken. I call the Democrats' strategy being the adult in the room. Clearly the House GOP is the irresponsible party here. Or, if you prefer, the party willing to burn down the house just because.

Mitch McConnell has already signaled that this gambit by House GOP won't work as he is quoted as saying, "No, I would not be concerned about a financial crisis" from the same article. That tells me that McConnell knows where this is going and it signals that cooler heads in the GOP intend not to let this veer into disaster.

Bad (House GOP) governance is bad. In this case, potentially disastrous.

going to this event in NYC for the Bancroft Library on Monday that i forgot i RSVP'ed for ..

i have not been to a "soiree" in quite some time!

We are delighted that you are able to join us on Monday, January 23rd at 5:30PM for a cocktail reception at the Knickerbocker Club, located at Fifth Avenue at 62nd Street. This soiree, hosted by Gifford Combs, will be a wonderful opportunity to meet Kate Donovan, the new Director of The Bancroft Library and Associate University Librarian for Special Collections at UC Berkeley, as well as hear Library priorities from University Librarian Jeff MacKie-Mason.

The Knickerbocker has a few club rules:

Dress code is strictly observed. Gentlemen are required to wear jackets and ties at all times. Appropriate attire for ladies is NYC business attire, dresses, skirts, and dressy or business pant suits.
