Thought folks might appreciate this find. I’ve been on a deep dive revisiting the Niners teams of yore, especially the early Walsh era that was slightly before my time. My earliest memories are the Seifert years. Anyway, I’ve always been fascinated by the fact the pro football used to be played in Golden Gate Park and was curious if there was any footage of Kezar in its glory, and found this recording of the 1970 NFC championship between the Niners and the Cowboys. It featured some pretty familiar names. Our very own Craig Morton was the Dallas QB, the tight end was Mike Ditka, and Dan Reeves was on that squad as well. Steve Spurrier played for the Niners, and the coach, Dick Nolan, was the father of former Niners coach Mike Nolan. This was one of the last pro games played at Kezar before they moved to the Stick. Watching games from this era is so interesting to me. It’s almost a different game entirely from today’s version of the NFL.

Goff is only the third QB in NFL history to lead multiple teams to 14 wins in a season including playoffs.

The other two are Tom Brady and Peyton Manning who have done it numerous times. Goff, only one time with each franchise.

If he wins the next game, Goff will join Brady, Manning, Kurt Warner and Craig Morton as the fifth QB in NFL history to lead multiple teams to a Super Bowl.

Mauer, Helton, and Beltré elected to the baseball Hall of Fame

https://www.mlb.com/news/2024-baseball-hall-of-fame-election-results

My criteria for being in the hall is as follows: is there any doubt? If not, you're in. If people have to make a case for you then forget about it. There are too many people in it. Should have been left for the true superstars of the game. None of this, "well everyone else who has X number of wins is in...."

I hear ya, OD. But the goalposts have moved as guys like Jim Rice, Baines, McGriff, etc. have gotten in. But someone’s gotta get in if the sanctimonious writers are gonna take it upon themselves to be the arbiters of justice to keep out some of the best that ever played the sport.

The whole thing is a sham anyway if David Ortiz and Gaylord Perry are in while Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are out.

Expand full comment

Yeah, that's pretty much my stance. Until Bonds and Clemens are in, I don't care.

Expand full comment

Exactly. I mean, Ortiz was the game changer for me, and an awful look for the voters that basically de-legitimized the BBWAA. A steroid-using DH is a first ballot guy now? Please.

Expand full comment

I think Helton should be in the Hall of very good. Beltré obviously is 1st ballot. Mauer, probably isn't 1st ballot but I think would still make it.

I also don't think Wagner should make it, since he probably will make it next year.

2025 will be interesting because Ichiro will be first ballot. I don't think anyone else, other than maybe Pedroia, will make it at all. I don't think many of them will get the 5% required to stay on the ballot. So I think you'll probably see Billy Wagner make the jump. I don't think Sheffield or Andruw Jones will make a big enough jump to get in next year.

Expand full comment

I’m ok with Mauer. If a DH who juiced is a 1st ballot guy, a Gold Globe catcher with a batting title and MVP absolutely should be too.

Expand full comment

Yeah I don’t feel Helton, seems obviously a juicer

Expand full comment

I was talking about Ortiz last year as a 1st ballot guy.

I’m 100% cool with Helton, even with the park. His road splits were solid enough - plus he’s a franchise icon. No issues there.

Expand full comment

I don't know that Helton was an obvious juicer. I wouldn't be surprised either way. For me it's just that ballpark--especially during his tenure--that makes his accomplishments so difficult to put into context. I do find it hard to believe he was better ballplayer than Sheffield, and I suspect his MLB colleagues would agree.

Expand full comment

For context, Sheffield has a 60 WAR to Helton's 61.5 w/o the obviously enormous ballpark advantage.

Maybe Nikki Haley is doing the hard work of taking down Trump. But that goes counter to her softening of her rhetoric while in New Hampshire as if she were running for the VP spot. OTOH, softening her rhetoric isn't necessarily a lukewarm endorsement of DiJiT. It could be tack to not totally turning off people she needs to attract. It could very well be strategic.

The White House had a pharmacy in it, run by the Navy. When Trump came to office, he staffed it with his own crony. The DoD's Office of Inspector General put out a report that the pharmacy under Trump's administration went wild. The pharmacy wasted three-quarters of a million dollar by giving away drugs, including baggies of name-brand prescriptions sedatives and sleeping pills like they were party gifts. It's almost like there was like a coked-up and Adderall-popping fiends there.

Following one of the most prolific three-game stretches of her career, California women's water polo goalkeeper Isabel Williams was named the first MPSF Player of the Week of the 2024 season, the conference announced Tuesday.

The two-time ACWPC All-American averaged 14.7 saves per game as she helped lead the Golden Bears to a 3-0 weekend at Fresno State's Polo-Palooza with wins over three top-13 teams. Behind Williams' 44 saves and five steals, Cal allowed just 5.7 goals per game, getting out to one of its best defensive starts to a year in recent memory.

It would be cool if there was some sort of heightened marketing effort around the team and around Lauzon and Frazier, in light of their success. People are glued to the TV for Olympic level women’s team, not sure why they wouldn’t watch the good collegiate ones. Or maybe there is a heightened effort and I just don’t know about it!

I'm about 5 episodes in this new series and I really like it. I think it's better than the movies (except it doesn't have Alexandra Daddario).
