Things that have happened in this 30-minute interview:

1) candidate’s internet cut out

2) hiring manager muting himself mid-question

3) HR person trying to discuss interview logistics when the candidate was already in the room

4) hiring manager's cat singing the song of its people in the background

The Olympics -- both summer and winter -- have lost a great deal of luster over the past few decades. They've gone from must watch to meh.

The IOC is nothing more than a criminal enterprise with international cachet, validated by major TV networks while extorting athletes' dreams of glory for their spectacle and avarice.

Just my two cynical cents.

Expand full comment

True, but doesn't this also describe basically every pro sport?

Expand full comment

It does in a looser sense. The IOC seems to be more or less immune to legal pushback. Not so with the NFL, NBA, and MLB.

Expand full comment

I agree on the luster falling away. I actually think it has to do with both the expansion of coverage to cable/streaming so the broadcasters don't feel bad about chasing ratings first and foremost on the main broadcast, which means only the biggest TV sports are shown. And far to long of breaks from the action to manufacture drama with interviews and 'get to know the players' spots.

The actual competitions that I've watched have mostly been very engaging.

Hiding a significant amount of coverage out of view on Peacock doesn't seem like it will help with anything either.

Killing off NBC Sports Network a month before the Olympics started was a strange idea, unless they actually think significant numbers of people will start subscribing to Peacock (I watched plenty of NBCSN--Premiere League, various racing events, various Olympic sports--and I have no interest whatsoever in Peacock).

OK Senator Standridge (R) introduced a state bill that allows parents to sue any public school educators for teaching for 5 years anything "in opposition to closely held religious beliefs of a student." Penalties include banishment from teaching at public schools for 5 years. The bill is horribly written. Yeah, good luck with that.

I don't understand the name. The city of Washington is obviously named after George. And Commander is a Navy rank, which George never was a part of. Thus, it is a generic term, like "leaders". I think it's sounds like an MLS mascot name.

I've already heard comments that the way the Patriots are sometimes shortened to the Pats, the Commanders will be shortened to the Commies. Also, I almost puked watching the team president, or whatever his job title is, spinning how great the name is. I made it through about 30 seconds and had to turn it off. Early talk on local sports radio is not positive.

Commanders? Not an inspired choice. I would have preferred something more Beltway-centric like the Lobbyists.

Actually, the WFT missed a huge opportunity in other ways.

Washington Presidents

Washington Supremes

Washington Federals (harkening back to a defunct USFL franchise)

Washington Admirals (better than Commanders)

Washington Senators (MLB doesn't use it and hasn't used it for about 50 years)

Why not offer a scholarship to a really good kicker? I would prefer we hand a scholarship to a kicker than the reach at QB that won’t see the field that just for a scholarship.

almost all kickers are PWOs who earn scholarships later in their career. I would guess less than 5 kickers per year get scholarships straight out of high school. A school can only afford to have 2 kickers on scholarship at any given time
