Daily Cal visited my work (no real workplaces!) https://youtu.be/PuN_OHiUDAA?si=BWgSW1H1bmefo_Xx

For the second time in my life I have a co-worker who hums incessantly. I find this maddening. In both cases the person is someone who is insipid.

Have you tried passive aggressiveness? I mean, you don't have to. It's fine if you don't.

Thinly veiled snark is justified in such a case. It'd probably go over their head, anyway.

Agree on both counts. Another alternative is strangulation but that might cost me my position.

Secretly spike their morning coffee with a little LSD…see what happens.

Expand full comment

LSD is a nice call, but if supply is a problem, Ex-Lax might be a good alternative. It would at least cause a far more entertaining sound to come out of a different orifice.

Expand full comment

I could see the LSD making the whistling much worse. I guess there's only one way to find out...

Just trying to think of ways to effect meaningful change while avoiding a misdemeanor or felony assault charge….

Strangulation also puts you at risk of criminal prosecution, although you could conceivably argue justification on grounds of self-defense. ;-)

Groundhog Day: Ol' Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow this morning, so we're due for an early spring

Is there any common American holiday more bizarre than Groundhog Day?

Expand full comment

Columbus Day since he never was in what is the U.S.

Expand full comment

Not so much the holiday, but the Rose Parade event. It’s nice to have a flowery parade, but it became a gigantic nationally live televised event lasting hours.

Expand full comment

But is it more bizarre than Groundhog Day?

Expand full comment

Easter's a little wacky if you think about it. Some guy rose from the dead 2000 years ago so a giant rabbit brings everyone chocolate eggs?

Expand full comment

I was thinking this was the most likely challenger as weirdest holiday. Paganism, Christianity, loads of chocolate, and kids terrified of a man-sized rabbit all combine for a very, very strange holiday.

Expand full comment

Some of this has got to be about Christians appropriating spring/fertility/rebirth festivals that already existed around the same time of year.

I stand corrected. Well played, sir. Well played.

EDIT: that description makes the Good Friday observance all the more scary.

Expand full comment

By common, I suppose you mean a holiday known and observed (?) by most Americans?

Not that I can think of. There's even a movie centered on the holiday that goes off on a wacky tangent of repetition until you get it right.

Walk

Expand full comment

My wife wants to do one of these “send the suitcase ahead” walks on the West Highland Way ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Highland_Way ) which would be fine except she kept bringing it up as something to do this spring and I had to point out that I’m in no shape to do that at the moment & she seemed puzzled like she doesn’t live in the same house as my sedentary ass

I quite like Ft William. It's a quaint little town that's geared to tourism but doesn't feel too touristy. It's worth a couple days at the end of your trek.

The West Highland Museum is small, but nice. The secret portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie is there.

I didn't have time to take the train out to the Glenfinnan Viaduct and back, but I intend to some other time.

The Caledonian Sleeper runs from Ft William to London. I really enjoyed the trip a few years ago. They've since acquired new cars. It was mid-September when I went and I would have liked to have gone earlier in the year to take advantage of the extra daylight.

notwithstanding being in shape, the send ahead thing is a great idea and an ideal way to enjoy your vacation.

we have done a few hiking and cycling trips in this mode and it has been great. not sure if you were thinking solo or w/ a group. we did it w/ a 8-12 person group and it is enjoyable to meet like minded people, have people to share experiences and stories with.

also, it makes it so you dont have to talk to that one person you are with the entire time and if there is a difference in stamina or ability usually you find your match.

We hadn’t got as far in planning as “with other people,” but I think that’s the way to go. I actually needed a little boot to the ass to think about it; I’ve seen listing for similar trips in the French and Swiss alps, which I’m even less ready for than the west highland way
