Blade Runner 2049 (HBO, 11/19) - Producer Ridley Scott, who finally got the licensing rights from Philip K. Dick's (UC Berkeley attend 1949) estate. Denis Villeneuve directed, so it was visually stunning. The plot is really clever with some great sub-plots - but Villeneuve is overly self-indulgent with pacing and his very dark lighting choices. Really important plot points go by in a blink while you have long drawn out set-up pieces that add very little to the movie. Oh, and Ana de Armas is a frickin' smokeshow. This movie leaves HBO in two weeks.

Really enjoyed this on the big screen. Some folks think it's better than the original movie, but I don't agree.

Mostly what I remember about that film is that I had to watch most of it on my iPad with my better headphones on, because the sound mastering was just a shitshow on my television. And that Ana de Armas is a smokeshow.

NBC continues to botch coverage. Stayed up to watch the halfpipe finals, and Sean White's last runs, which they showed 11 PM-12:30 AM PDT. They skipped some of the runs, including White's 2nd run, which resulted in a 4th place finish. Showed his first one, and his crash out on his last one, but not the one that contended. Showed some runs silently in split scene mode with advertising, but didn't caption who it was who was running.

This after watching the USA women's hockey vs the Czech Republic on the USA channel. Trouble was the listings I read said it would show the men's hockey match, which is the hockey I really wanted to see. No mention, and no trace of it on NBC, USA, or CNBC, which is also carrying some of it.

And of course CBS on the morning news shows White's crash landing, but not the run that actually almost medaled. Or any of the medal runs.

NBC, CBS, and Amazon Prime should be broadcsst partner candidates so that Pac-12 games can be broadcast at 12:00 Noon and 3:30 PM Pacific Time on Saturdays.

Thursday night is trash if it follows a Saturday game for the opponents without a bye week.

Larry Scott had little imagination as Commissioner. George Kliavkoff (sp?) needs to do much better than Scott.

I'd argue that the problem was with Larry Scott having a little too much imagination and imagining that sole ownership of the Pac-12 Network would be more valuable than it was.

Expand full comment
Feb 11, 2022·edited Feb 11, 2022

That's an interesting perspective, though I think that Scott was simply assuming that the Big Ten template would work in the Pac-12.

It didn't. Scott failed to take into account the the Pac-12 was nothing but filler for ESPN and Fox Sports. To ESPN and Fox Sports, that's all the Pac-12 will ever be because those networks are all in on the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC. The SEC, Big Ten, and ACC audiences are in the Eastern and Central Time Zones.; the programming schedule for ESPN and FOX Sports is driven by those audiences. The Mountain and Pacific Time Zones merely fill in the late afternoon and After Dark time slots.

That's the way it has been for decades, is now, and the way it will always be for ESPN and Fox Sports.

Expand full comment

Wasn't the Big Ten partnered with Fox for their network? Scott didn't go that way, he argued for the Pac-12 to go it alone.

I would approach NBC and Amazon Prime. Scrap the divisions, scrap the 9 game conference schedule and maybe keep the Pac 12 network for all non FB/BB sports and to do replays of FB/BB games.

We have a bunch of new vendors these days. Cabinet guy shows up unannounced in a thin-blue-line shirt in olive drab and no mask. We ask him to wear a mask. He says "my job don't require me to wear one no more." My wife invites him to have a brand-new one. He says he has one in his truck. We then starts walking around my house. Shocked we let don't say anything for a bit. Later, we ask him to wear one and he goes on a bit of a riff about how they are not needed because everyone has a vaccine and they are not required by law to which my wife says "well, they're required to be in my house". Meanwhile, my blood is starting to boil because I tend to be less diplomatic. We have a bit of stare down and he pulls one out of his pocket - which he had in there the whole time. We start going through all the fixes he's supposed to do. We see cabinets that are not our color. Fucko went to the wrong address.

Manfred talks publicly for first time since lockout, which is a big part of the f-ing problem, no??? He acknowledges that the universal DH is here to stay, as expected, and that losing regular season games would be bad. Look for spring training to be delayed, perhaps truncated....but MLB to start on time, tho how’s that gonna work is anyone’s guess.

It's not set in stone (because the players have not agreed to it), but the universal DH is supposedly a concession to the players. By the way, Manfred in his press conference yesterday just rub me the wrong way, even knowing that most of what he said was just for posturing.

Anyhow, I didn't expect the lockout talks to really get underway until around now anyways because they really needed the time pressure to start. The really shortened FA signing period once the lockout is over is going to be interesting.

I can’t imagine a deal being completed before the end of this month. Didn’t MLB just announce they will no longer be testing for steroids? Nah. The decision to pinch hit the nine spot or even double switch is obvious to even a casual baseball fan.

I'd argue that a tougher decision for managers is whether to keep a pitcher in the game based on the upcoming matchups and how much you think your pitcher has left. If I'm in the AL, I'm faced with that choice. If I'm in the NL, I'm often let off the hook because of course I'm pinch hitting the pitcher's spot in the lineup.

So if we're gonna use hashtags, the NL is really #TeamObviousMoves and it's the AL that is #TeamStrategy.
