She blinded me with...

100 years down the line we'll still have neanderthals in Congress saying "how can there be global warming if it's so cold outside?" Here's why:

https://theconversation.com/atlantic-ocean-is-headed-for-a-tipping-point-once-melting-glaciers-shut-down-the-gulf-stream-we-would-see-extreme-climate-change-within-decades-study-shows-222834

Instruments deployed in the ocean starting in 2004 show that the Atlantic Ocean circulation has observably slowed over the past two decades, possibly to its weakest state in almost a millennium. Studies also suggest that the circulation has reached a dangerous tipping point in the past that sent it into a precipitous, unstoppable decline, and that it could hit that tipping point again as the planet warms and glaciers and ice sheets melt.

In a new study using the latest generation of Earth’s climate models, we simulated the flow of fresh water until the ocean circulation reached that tipping point.

The results showed that the circulation could fully shut down within a century of hitting the tipping point, and that it’s headed in that direction. If that happened, average temperatures would drop by several degrees in North America, parts of Asia and Europe, and people would see severe and cascading consequences around the world.

We also discovered a physics-based early warning signal that can alert the world when the Atlantic Ocean circulation is nearing its tipping point.

I just listened to a podcast that discussed the slow carbon rock cycle in geologic terms. Understanding how carbon cycles through the earth naturally and realizing that this cycle has historically created a natural thermostat for earth temps really helped to understand how the fast carbon cycle has disrupted so much.

I have found that understanding geologic timelines takes tremendous imagination. It is difficult to understand processes that take thousands or millions of years when we get only a mere 80-/+ years or so on this planet.

AndyPanda's avatar

The planet is a big place. It and climate change, regardless of direction locally, are too big to comprehend for people still choosing to think at the 3rd grade level at best.

I kinda like that smell. I also like that oily smell in a big mechanics' garage. It smells like productivity and automotive problem-solving.

That said, I'm not buying a bottle of it to douse myself in it.

Declare something to the DBD using an unusual unit of measurement

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i drank a s***load of gin martinis last night.

heyalumnigo's avatar

shitload and shit ton are both great units of measurement.

FiatSlug's avatar

"Gin" is redundant to "martini(s)".

But I take your meaning and hope that you are well.

O.Overall's avatar

I would guess 1-2 years but he’ll have to seek a stay and if he gets a stay then post a bond in order to avoid paying immediately

heyalumnigo's avatar

here comes his "donate to my fund to pay the money I owe" grift.

FiatSlug's avatar

If Trump posts a $355MM bond, does that mean he has to put the entire amount in cash into the bond or does he put up a percentage?

I imagine that this is not like a bail bond, where a percentage is posted because it relies on the person being bailed out to appear in court.

The risk of loss must be far greater because there's already a judgement against him. So, I'm wondering if, in fact, the entire judgement amount must be made available for the bond to exist or be in effect.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I thought after the E. Jean Carroll verdict people were saying he had to put the entire amount into a bond if he appealed. So I would assume it would have to be the entire 355M. But isn't that the total across all the defendants?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68308372

Berkelium97's avatar

So many shootings lately (certainly here in the Baltimore area) stem from young kids (15-25) squabbling over nothing. Gun control is clearly part of the answer, but so is understanding conflict resolution and de-escalation.

AndyPanda's avatar

Its amazing that 2 people in a dispute engage in a gunfight, and neither one can manage to hit the other one, but they can hit numerous bystanders and other stuff.

O.Overall's avatar

Yes but young guys getting in a fist fight is sort of a who cares. It only becomes a mass shooting disaster because of our gun laws

Go Bears!!!

SGBear's avatar

I saw a woman coming down the street with a blue sweatshirt with script California the front and was about to give her a hearty "Go Bears". And then I noticed the script was a little bit off, the blue was a bit off, and the stitching was white. She was a tourist, not an alumna.

FiatSlug's avatar

Shoulda given the "GO BEARS!" anyhow.

"What strange magic is this clothing?"

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

So I have started walking a daily 5-mile coastal loop down here in Santa Barbara by the Harbor/Breakwater/Stearns Wharf in hopes of losing my 14 pound chin, so I am in the more touristy areas. However, I must admit, I am noticing an uptick in Cal related gear amongst the people…it’s good to see. It’s still 50/50 on whether the “Go Bears” is even acknowledged, let alone reciprocated, but it’s nice to be seeing “Cal” in the wild, so to speak.

Bowlesman 80's avatar

There's "faux" Bears out there with "Cal..i" gear. They fool me at a distance. Here we are concerned about brand or die and no one ever took those "Cali" clowns to court.

Boom. Here come the Russians if he can't get any legitimate loans.

FiatSlug's avatar

Even if they wanted to, I don't know that they could.

FiatSlug's avatar

My total is a little less - $354.9MM (rounding off). Both numbers are close enough. Exceedingly few people in this world have the resources to wave off such a penalty.

The list of joint and several liable entities along with Trump, I hope, is exhaustive so that he can't hide assets and escape judgement.

I really want to see this man forced to sell off prized possessions and properties. I have no illusion that this will leave him destitute. I do hope that this is the first of several penalties that will include prison, forced exit from politics, and exile.
