Your favorite band with "The" in their name

I like their first album (only one I have) in an imported English print with zero words about songs etc...

Their album "Disintegration" is one of my favorite albums of all time

I was trying to think of a band with "the" in the middle but I couldn't come up with one.

I had the same response as everyone else and looked for bands _starting_ with "the," so I'll add

The Joy Formidable

The Chemical Brothers

The Beta Band

The KLF

The Dead Milkmen

The Specials

The Charlatans (UK)

The Jam

but strictly speaking the qualifier is just "in," so I'll add My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Hmmm...

I like these, but only have Vinyl of them when I was looking stuff up - so I couldn't see these when I was making the list from iTunes (no where near all) Also, The Jam was super great with some songs, but a lot less with the whole album.

The Beths

The Black Keys

The Chills

The English Beat

The Jesus and Mary Chain

The Kinks (mainly 60's, early 70's)

The New Pornographers

The Replacements

The Smiths

The Soft Boys (only 2 albums!)

The Strokes

Lots of good ones in that list. I saw The English Beat and Morrissey (sans the rest of The Smiths, of course) live last year.

I was a big fan of The Strokes over their first few albums but I lost track of them after that. I even picked up a copy of their album Is This It in England because the US release omitted the song "New York City Cops," which was too insensitive for American audiences in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 because the chorus has the line: "New York City Cops, they ain't too smart."

The Charlie Daniels Band.

my favorite song of theirs is Uneasy Rider .. a sort of long narrative ballad about driving thru the south ..

The narrator protagonist of "Uneasy Rider" is a long-haired marijuana smoker driving a Chevrolet with a "peace sign, mag wheels, and four on the floor."

Heh, I remember that "Millions of Peaches" song by them. It always seems to show up in unexpected places, like in a recent episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I’ll be honest, not a big fan of them and I believe they are a bit overrated.

Expand full comment

I always wonder why people do that. Someone names something they like and they get told, "I don't like it/them." Don't see the point.

What’s the point about anyone giving any opinion on anything.

There are differences, though. If I say who I think should be the starting quarterback, or whether the basketball team should play a zone, those are debatable topics and differing views are expected and welcome. But if you say your favorite fruit is strawberry what's the point of someone saying they don't like strawberries? It's a matter of taste.

Fair but I am just debating on the overall greatness of The Beatles. I think they are good and I certainly don’t dislike them and their music. I am just debating their overall greatness. The same way we debate athletes and whether some are overrated or underrated or who the GOAT is or your favorite Cal football player of all time might be. It is open to debate, opinion and interpretation due to a number of factors.

So some comments about The Beatles. A great band? Oh absolutely zero question about that, they clearly are. Does that mean every one HAS to think there the greatest? No that's not the way things are, people can like what they want. I have Sgt. Pepper Band (1967) album but I never listen to it. If I picked the two I like best it would be Rubble Soul (1965) and Revolver (1966). My parents were fans after we moved to England '66, and before we left I think BBC 4 played a video of Abbey Road EVERY NIGHT.

Anyway my parents were fans, and I liked them too, but I think for some reason I liked The Who better (why? not in anyway sure) I think everyone who has any opinion about rock music should understand: all of the best other bands in England (The Kinks, Stones & Who) knew and agreed that the Beatles were ahead of them, were doing elements of music structure and composing that were a couple years ahead them. That's not a minor reason for where you rate them, even if you're not a fan (which is OK!).

Elk

I saw one in Death Valley. 10,000 foot elevation below the summit of Telescope Peak which I was hiking to the top. The vegetation there had switched from mesquite and junipers to alpine plants, which the Elk was munching on. I emailed Tom Stienstra the outdoors guru about the encounter, which seemed fairly odd whereas bighorn sheep are more common up there.

Hah, I once emailed Stienstra, too. He wrote and article entitled "Discovered...[something, something]" which reveled at discovering a local waterfall that many of us had been going to for years. He changed the title after I kindly pointed out that his article made it sound as if he were the first to visit this waterfall.

Dear Edward, Ep 6 from last night is in the books.

We’ve discussed before, but again, boy howdy, just highly recommended…a very touching AppleTV series based on a book that Scootie and a number of others have read.

Starting Shrinking now, apparently, as it just rolled right over into it.

HAG and I watched the first 2.5 quarters of the Warriors game vs the Lakers. even though the Ws got it down to a 1 point lead right after hafltime it did not look like they had any real chance of winning ..

when the Lakers lead got above 10 i went to bed. i assume HAG watched to the end mostly because of time zones and jet lag.

Expand full comment

I went back to work a little bit with about 7 min left in the 4th. Warriors played poorly. Poole had quite a few head scratching TOs. Warriors got beat down the court many many times for Laker fast break points. One time they showed Steph on replay just shaking his head back and forth. It's hard for Klay to really do his thing without Steph and Poole being effective. Which is why he could never be No 1 on a team. Bench players couldn't hit a 3 that hey normally do. Even wide open ones.

A Cal alum that is in the Miata club told me about the Sports and Rec camp. She also said they have volunteer weekend before it opens. You can stay for free but have to help do things like clean and paint. Actually sounds kinda cool. I have never been and she said that might be a good, go and check it out for free and see how you like it.

The volunteer camp sounds pretty cool. The Lair was a lot of fun, man…I went for 15 years growing up as a camper, and really regret not going back as a staffer whilst in college. Newellbany and I did spend our college summers working on staff at a Conference Center/Family Resort in the Adirondacks…I found a lot of similarities. I’d totally support giving it a whirl, hag!
