I watched a K-drama, Iris, on Netflix. It's a 20 episode series about two guys in a S Korean spy organization. I really enjoyed it.

Tomato soup. Very few ingredients, so it all comes down to the ingredients. It's a great for making in summer and freezing for a winter meal. Pairs perfectly with a grilled cheese sandwich.

Ina does a delicious tomato orzo soup with grilled cheese croutons (made with Gruyere) floating on top. Have some in the fridge right now.

Revenge of the Nerds...wrong in so many ways!

Expand full comment

I watched Cannonball Run a few months back and while I was expecting the usual sexist / homophobic / xenophobic jokes, what was really strikingly different was how much drunk driving was just played for gags throughout the film. Looks like it was a lot of fun to film though.

At the time I watched Cannonball Run, I had never heard of Jackie Chan. When I first saw a movie with him in it a couple of years later, I was like, hey, the guy from Cannonball Run that drove with Jaws.

Own that you dropped your wrestling team after we obliterated you. Again. Also, I went 4-4 in a baseball game just by dinking fly balls off your stupid right field fence net

Expand full comment

Wrestling? Like contact Pilates? Good riddance…rolling around on a mat isn’t a sport.

That fence was admittedly a joke, tho Albany’s field sported a similar short RF IIRC. If we’re being honest, the ESAL was filled with dogschitt ball fields. O’Dowd was nice, Encinal and those St. Mary’s a$$hats had OK ones…everything else ranged from meh to garbage. We played St. Elizabeth’s on some skin infield with busted glass in the hood across from Too Short’s old house. I see fields the HS kids play on now and it pisses me off!

No matter.

Expand full comment

I've never heard greco-roman wrestling described as contact Pilates but it makes a weird kind of sense...

Expand full comment

haha so true. Your fence was worse than ours but we had the jank center field drop off so it went from 30 feet down to 8 feet in dead center... but that was like 300 feet out. So many cheap HRs

And that St Elizabeth's field. Lawdy. I still tell the story of when we dropped our varsity team off at Skyline and we drove down E 86th to get to their field to play JV. I saw prostitution in action, drug deals, fights... my lily white ass was terrified. So we only beat them 19-0 that day. Damn their program sucked.

Agreed…I remember away games at Richmond and Kennedy HS (Richmond) - seriously eye opening experiences. I think PHS finally got booted out through the Caldecott tunnel to a league with Acalanes, Miramonte and Campo. It was fun watching Jason Kidd twice a year and playing against him in baseball for a couple of years…Newellbany played v him in hoops. That was a drubbing.

Expand full comment

we had a week shortly after we expelled 11 of 12 varsity BBall players for receiving oral ministrations from a frosh in the lunch room were we got beat 80-18 by O'Dowd at home and 95-46 at St. Joe's (J Kidd's frosh year). Whomever made that schedule was an asshole

The 2 year old pup Jonesy is getting the snip tomorrow and I’m preparing to be confined to the house through the weekend, at the least, so I am trying to account for all the reasons that would cause me to have to run errands this weekend….grocery store, pharmacy, dry cleaners, etc.

Firmly convinced he’s on the spectrum so I need to keep him doped up so he doesn’t chase shadows and schitt like normal and rip his stitches. This little mf’er could very well be a canine junkie after this week….

Most beautiful winter day in Los Angeles that I can remember. It was cold and windy, but the air was as clear as I've ever seen and the snow level dropped to 1,500ft overnight (for the second time in the past week). Everything over 3,000 got at least a foot leading to the most snow capped mountains bordering L.A. that I've ever seen here. Look for some really fantastic photography to be coming out in the next few days.

Expand full comment

When I went to bed last night it was raining. It was also very cold. Woke up this morning and it was still cold. After breakfast, I unlocked the pickup. Tried to open the door; wouldn't budge. Looked again at the door. Realized that the window had ice on it. The door was frozen shut. I had to body slam the door to break the ice and get it open.

mostly nice today. we got about 3-4 inches of snow overnight on Monday and i enjoyed shoveling snow for a bit on Tuesday morning. it was the first real snow of the season in NYC that lasted more than a few hours on the ground.

A nephew and his girlfriend decided they'd like to live at Tahoe for a while so are renting a place. I think he may be regretting that decision based on all the shoveling he's been having to do. Probably doesn't have time to go snowboarding since he's too busy shoveling and clearing snow.

This would be a rough winter for that experiment. I'm hoping maybe it will drive away some of the people who moved up there during the panorama to ease the housing crunch a bit.

Mavs down by 2, Kyrie dribbles to the top of the key with 4 seconds left. Justin Holiday is open beyond the arc because the Pacers are doubling Doncic. Kleber sets a pick for Irving in the paint. Hardaway is on the right wing as an option. Of all the things he can do, he chooses to waste time and then heave a contested step-back 3 pointer and ensures that he and Luka go 1-4 together.
