I went to Trader Joe's to get milk for No 2 and saw they had the gorgonzola gnocchi that he loves. Reminded me that I had a bag of Truffle Cream filled gnocchi (mascarpone sauce with truffle bits) that I bought a few months ago when I couldn't find the gorgonzola gnocchi. Made it up with some leftover pizza sauce (basically tomatoes, olive oil, and garlic) and it was really good. The filling makes it rich.

clapdoc's avatar

Did you get the milk?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Yes I got 2 gallons. He can go through a gallon in like 2.5 days.

I too remember the days before adult-onset lactose intolerance.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think I'm also getting some lactose intolerance. It's not too bad yet. I can still drink a little nonfat milk every day.

Interesting. So this is between episodes 1 and 2? Or between 3 and 4?

Oh reminds me I need to watch this.

Cugel's avatar

I don't think it's "great" TV, but it is entertaining.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I've never done one so I have a question. Do all wineries charge for a tour and tasting? The few tours of bourbon distilleries I've done were all free with like 1 taste afterwards.

Cugel's avatar

They pretty much all do so now (charge for tasting) - most will comp it if you buy a bottle or two, but not all.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Yes, but some have grounds you can just walk around, and like BentPawn said, a lot of places require reservations now (because of COVID).

heyalumnigo's avatar

My Uncle is coming to town and my mom was thinking of taking him wine tasting. I assume wineries opened back up for that. Anyways, anyone have any suggestions on where to go?

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Hendry Winery and Materra Winery are my favorites. Also, book as early as possible. The days of being able to drop in are long gone.

heyalumnigo's avatar

It'll have to be midweek so I'm hoping that it will be less crowded, if they're even open midweek right now.

Cugel's avatar

Sonoma, if you want to avoid crowds

heyalumnigo's avatar

Any specific wineries?

SGBear's avatar

It's much harder to string together decent cellar door visits in Sonoma because they are so much further apart. It's been ages since I've been but La Crema, Simi, Sonoma Cutrer for wines. You gotta book appointments.

Macarolina's avatar

Be aware that sometimes people say Sonoma when they are referencing Sonoma County. Sonoma County has lots of great tasting options. Healdsburg, right off of 101, has a ton of tasting rooms on the central town Plaza, and lots of wineries a short drive from town (Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley). Simi (recc'd below) is in Healdsburg and does a great winery tour on appointment. La Crema, also recc'd below, is one of the tasting rooms in Healdsburg.

Cugel's avatar

Depends on what your uncle likes and or drinks, do you know? I'd ask first.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Nope I have no idea. I assume he drinks wine but my mom always get him some beer when he's here. I think she chose wine moreso to see the area and check out the wineries than to actually taste them. But I'll ask if we ended up doing that and let you know.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

My mom has a place off Trancas St., in Napa...last time I had friends in town, we headed up Trancas, took a left on Silverado Trail, and passed a ton of options, including different wineries with different varietals like Chimney Rock, Pine Ridge, and Mumm.

Be glad to share more from this.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I'm sure Cugel will have opinions, but what kind of experience do you think they want (or you, if you're going along)?

-private tasting

-casual tasting at a counter

-picnic

-casual food

-formal food

heyalumnigo's avatar

I don't know. Probably just casual tasting at the counter. I think she's just trying to find somewhere to take him how that I'm here to drive since usually they just sit around the house since she doesn't drive anywhere she's not really familiar with.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Some places have grape juice and/or DD options, so keep an eye out for that.

I recently went here with a group of friends because they had kids, so the picnic area (free, no reservations) was a good option: https://www.vsattui.com/ You can buy food (they have a deli counter as well as cheese, bread, crackers...) and bottles of wine/grape juice. You can also make reservations for tastings. That's in Napa Valley, and if you go to Napa, you can also check out Bouchon Bakery and Model Bakery.

My parents like https://castellodiamorosa.com/ not for the wine, but because they like the castle. They also have a grape juice/DD option, and I think they're reservation only.

This was a cool place to visit because they have a lot of Coppola memorabilia. When I went with my parents and their friends, we just reserved a table at the Bistro, so it wasn't pre-booking a set number of tastings: https://www.inglenook.com/

In Sonoma Valley, I have a soft spot for Gundlach Bundschu, but it looks like everything is reservation only, so you can't just hang out on their picnic grounds https://www.gunbun.com/

heyalumnigo's avatar

Thanks I'll check them out.

Cugel's avatar

The top 2 listed are uh, tourist traps, bottom two, good wineries (inglenook is $$$).

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Like I said, it's not for the wine; it's for the setup.

g.oso's avatar

most wineries do charge for tastings that could include anywhere between 3-6 tastings. It's been so long since I've done this so I can't say how much they charge. From my experience not all wineries do tours, the ones that do are usually free. and agree with Cugel about avoiding Napa. There are tons of tasting rooms in downtown Sonoma so it minimizes the driving around.

SGBear's avatar

I am bit curious about this whole on-off thing. It sounds like the Polish and Americans were not on the same page as to what they want. Perhaps the US wanted the transfer to be secret, but Poland also wanted it public that they weren't "their" jets for culpable deniability. Perhaps Americans didn't want to be on the hook for millions of dollars for jets that would only fly for a few days before being shot down and that sending Stingers/Javelins in secret plus three-way trades with Turkey for drones would be far more effective.

Cugel's avatar

I'm sure the US wanted this to just happen without any notice. Publishing this killed it.

FiatSlug's avatar

That was my thought last night, as well.

clapdoc's avatar

Or maybe they publicly say it isn't happening, then they do it anyways.

Scootie's avatar

This was my first thought.

clapdoc's avatar

I was going to say that the fact that the planes were MiG-29s would give away that the jets were not American, but it turns out the U.S. has 21 MiG-29s.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Really? I wonder if they're at Top Gun or Nellis AFB for Red Flag.

clapdoc's avatar

"Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, a number of newly independent states suddenly found themselves in possession of former Soviet military equipment. This included the small country of Moldova, who now has possession of 34 MiG-29s.

In 1996, Moldovan authorities informed U.S. officials that the country had been contacted by the Iranian government over the potential purchase of the MiG-29s. Iran already operated a number of MiG-29 aircraft, but the MiG-29C variant – of which Moldova had 14 – would have represented an upgrade over its older models. Of more concern to Clinton administration officials, however, was the potential for MiG-29Cs to be used for the delivery of nuclear weapons. It was this concern that allowed the United States to purchase a number of MiG-29s from Moldova as part of the Department of Defense’s Cooperative Threat Reduction Program.

The following year, the United States completed the purchase of 21 MiG-29s – including the 14 MiG-29Cs – from Moldova, in exchange for a $40 million cash payment and humanitarian assistance, as well as non-lethal defense equipment such as military trucks."

GoldenSD81's avatar

I think it is a combination of all those things.

I also think Poland saw this as an opportunity to upgrade their fleet with newer U.S. fighter jets.

I maybe wrong about this but I think UCSD's transition to D1 is still so recent (like 2 years ago) that they are not yet eligible for any NCAA tournaments.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

This is correct. The game was Saturday. It did impact standings going into the conference tournament.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Paywalled, and I can't find a comparable article elsewhere. What happened?

GoldenSD81's avatar

UCSD was down 76-72. UCSD scored to make it 76-74 and then stole the ball and scored again to presumably tie it at 76 but the scoreboard read 76-75, with Cal Poly still in the lead. So ucsd player fouls Cal Poly, Cal Poly hits both free throws, ucsd down 78-75 attempts and misses a 3 to tie so they could Cal Poly again. Cal Poly hits both free throws and wins the game 80-76 after the score board is corrected.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Thank you. I'd also say it's on the refs to stop play and correct it if they can without disrupting game flow. But in real time that may not have been an option.

GoldenSD81's avatar

My sons graduated from Cal Poly, so there's a small affinity there. But this sucks, big time. Shenanigans, intentional or not, are still shenanigans. Crappy ending to the season. The scoreboard operator should be ashamed.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Based on the way the Warriors played last night, I think Will Ferrell needs to show up to every pre-game from now on. I guess it also helps that the Clippers couldn't make any wide open shots in the 2nd and the 3rd.

CruzinBears's avatar

Didn't help Klay from deep! Very excited to have Draymond, Andre and Wiseman returning next week.

I know a lot of W's fan are calling Wiseman a bust, tho I do think he will be good for them long term...but if Wiseman gives them anything this year, that'd be gravy.

But Kuminga/Wiseman/Moody is a pretty decent nucleus, tho they may have to get a different HC than Kerr.

sycasey's avatar

Nobody knows anything about Wiseman right now, which I guess is why the speculation is running wild.

clapdoc's avatar

I've always wanted to try buying tickets to a double-header. Is that even a thing? Can you buy the same seat for a double-header?

heyalumnigo's avatar

I remember they used to have real DHers where you didn't have to leave in between games. Now they want to sell separate tickets so you have to leave inbewteen. Although these days the DH are usually due to rainouts not a scheduled one. I would guess these scheduled ones would still require 2 tickets so it probably just depends on if they're available for both games.

dcblue's avatar

Real DHers were great. They were almost always on Sundays and I would take a bunch of food and the Sunday paper and spread out in the bleachers at the Coliseum. Just a few bucks for a days entertainment.

clapdoc's avatar

Scootie's avatar

yes, so long as it's not a day/nite double header. Scheduled ones are usually separate, but if there's a makeup for a rainout, you usually get 18 straight innings in the same seat.

Ron Rivera gets Wentz

https://www.profootballrumors.com/2022/03/colts-to-trade-carson-wentz-to-commanders

They’ll have Wentz under contract at a $22MM salary this year with a $6.294MM roster bonus. After that, they’ve got him for two more seasons. In 2023, he’s due $20MM in salary with a $6.176MM roster bonus. In 2024, that salary increases to $21MM with a $6.235MM bonus payout.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Poor Rivera...now he gets saddled with Wentz.

Tho this defines a very fair trade market for Jimmy G...a 3rd & a conditional 2nd sounds about right, as both are remarkably similar players.

Scootie's avatar

Let's just keep Jimmy as a backup if that's his value.

heyalumnigo's avatar

The question then is if it would be better for the 9ers to not have JimmyG so they're not tempted to put him in when/if Lance struggles. Because long run would it be better for Lance to keep playing through his struggles?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

You can't keep him for so many reasons, but the $25M+ in cap space is the biggest.

Hearing they'll trade him in the next day or two...he just waived his no-trade clause to IND, PIT and NOR, tho it's a moot point after next week, bc the clause expires...but they need to be under the cap by then, and they're over it now, before contract re-constructions.

Pittsburgh has always made sense, given their passing game is already predicated on quick reads bc of 1. poor OL play that can't pass protect; and, 2. Roethlisberger's lack of mobility and limited arm strength. Add in the traditional running game and a top 5 defense, and you have a match made in heaven for Jimmy G. He can absolutely lead them to the playoffs next year.

dcblue's avatar

The last two years are not guaranteed so they can get rid of him after the first year if it doesn't work. I've been listening to the radio while cleaning up around the house and there is universal disdain for this move. Except for one caller who said he's the best QB they've had in 30 years.

dcblue's avatar

As I was getting ready to go for a run over lunch time I had the radio on to sports talk. A caller was pushing for them to trade for Goff. I guess that won't be happening.

Justbear's avatar

I'm a member of the Cal Alumni Wine Club. 4 times a year, you get wine from producers who have Cal ties. The spring shipment arrived this week, and the bottles all had "Aggies Uncorked" stickers on them. Obviously the fulfiller does the same service for the Davis alumni club. Not a big deal obviously, I let the Cal alumni office know. They offered to mail me stickers. Kinda funny. I'd like to believe there is a Davis alumni who received their bottles with "Go Bears" stickers.

FiatSlug's avatar

"Not a big deal obviously, I let the Cal alumni office know. They offered to mail me stickers. Kinda funny. I'd like to believe there is a Davis alumni who received their bottles with "Go Bears" stickers."

Oh, gawd. Stories like this amaze me.

The person on the other end of the line is either (A) entirely unaware that any illusion of service/understanding/affinity has been shattered or (B) is trying to distract you, the caller, with "LOOK AT THIS SHINY GREAT THING I'M OFFERING!!!" Only the shiny great thing is stickers.

Sudden thought: there are a lot of incompetent grifters in this world. Most of them end up in sales.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

I'm with you. And I just wanted to laugh it off. But under the surface it annoyed me just enough to get me to my keyboard. I signed up due to Cal affinity, and that illusion was mildly burst. I actually checked the wines and paperwork to make sure it was all Cal-related.

Plus, I figured they'd want to know. If the fulfiller let this slip, what will maybe slip through next time.
